Chapter 9: Intertwined Fingers

Time passed and it was finally time to leave school. With heavy steps, I left the classroom and headed to the shoe locker at the entrance. There, I switched from my indoor shoes to loafers and made my way toward the school gate. There weren’t many other students around. Most of them were busy with their clubs and the ones without clubs were still chatting with their friends. It seemed I had left the class a bit too early. I checked the time and it hadn’t even been ten minutes since the class ended. I was definitely the ace of the ‘from class straight to home’ club, but to my surprise, another ace was already standing by the school gate. This girl looked even more eager to go home than me. 

It was Shikino. As soon as she spotted me, she immediately trotted over to me.

“Onii-chan! Good work today! Let’s go home so we can be all lovey dovey at home! Thanks to the incident during lunchtime, I’m running dangerously low on my Onii-chanium. I need to replenish my Onii-chanium soon before I get sick.”

“…Ho-How do I say it… You look more energetic than I thought, Shikino…”

I said so with a slight twitch in my cheeks. Seeing this, Shikino started shaking her head vigorously.

“I’m not okay. There’s no way I’m okay. Seeing that cockroach girl and that trashy guy ruined my mood to the root. After lunchtime ended, I still had to go through the fifth and sixth periods. I was seriously going crazy because I didn’t have you by my side, Onii-chan.”

“Shi-Shikino…? Yo-Your face is looking a bit scary right now…”

“To begin with, that woman doesn’t know anything. My heart has always been for you. The reason why I dated that useless guy was just to seal the feelings I have for you. I was struggling emotionally with him… Fufufufufu~ And yet, look at her. She looked triumphant after stealing that trash away. What an idiot. A total idiot!”

“Oh! But she said something about talking with you! Even though I don’t know what she’s scheming next, but… That girl is truly wicked….”

“…Yeah. I don’t really understand what she’s thinking either—Ah!?”

Suddenly, Shikino clung to my arm tightly. Her eyes were still devoid of any light. She was muttering something under her breath with a cold and tarrying look on her face.

“…Shi-Shikino-san…?”

Feeling a bit scared, I called out to her but my voice only reached the void. Not just my arm, Shikino was clinging to me up to my chest. We were standing right in the middle of the school gate, but Shikino was practically hugging me. People were starting to come from the school and it was clear to see this kind of hug was too much between siblings. 

“He-Hey? Shikino? I’m being serious here, can you let me go for a bit? We can’t hug. We can’t hug at school, okay? Let’s go home so we can talk it out, okay? Luckily, we live under the same roof, so we can do plenty of things at home without being mindful of prying eyes.”

I realized too late how bold my statement was only after I said it. What did I mean by ‘plenty of things’?? I felt embarrassed, but it seemed to be effective. Shikino finally looked up at me with a wistful gaze in response to my words. 

“…Nooo… Shikino… Shikino doesn’t want to be apart from Onii-chan either…”

“…”

My heart skipped a beat at that.

“Shikino… Shikino wants to be together with Onii-chan… Even if it’s just one minute more… Or even one second more…”

Shikino said, as if she was pouring all of her heart to me. I was at a loss for words. I could only stare at my little sister. 

“After all… We’re already lovers… We can love each other as much as we want… Just like when we were little…”

“..Shi-Shikino… Bu-But… This place is…”

“If… If Onii-chan were to leave me… I… I don’t think I could keep on living…”

The strength of her embrace grew stronger. Our bodies were pressed together with my little sister intertwining her hand with mine. Our fingers intertwined and I felt the overwhelming desire and determination from her, the determination to never let me go. 

“What should I do… So I can keep feeling you, Onii-chan…? What should I do… To keep you by my side forever…?”

“Shikino—”

“Should I cut that woman? What should I do, Onii-chan…? What should I do?”

At this point, Shikino was lost in her own world. She was trembling out of fear of losing me. I felt a deep sense of helplessness watching her like this. However, I knew. This was my moment to respond to her heartfelt confession.

“Shikino… I’m a terrible big brother to you… And a terrible boyfriend too…”

“Onii-chan is terrible…? No. That’s not true. Onii-chan, you’re—”

“I’m a terrible person. I didn’t understand your feelings, not as my little sister, nor as my girlfriend.”

I suddenly exclaimed as I slowly pulled Shikino’s body away from me. But, it wasn’t to reject her. No. I was just trying to maintain a more appropriate distance between a healthy couple. Our fingers were still intertwined as I looked her into the eyes. 

“Let’s go out and have some fun. I will have Mom know we’ll be home a bit late.”

“Huh…? Have some fun…? Where are we going…?”

“Anywhere! We can go to a lot of places! Come on, let’s go!”

“Ah…! O-Onii-chan…?!”

I grabbed Shikino’s hand a bit forcefully and started pulling her along. My little sister looked confused, but that confusion quickly faded, replaced by a happy smile as she squeezed my hand in return.
