Chapter 6: The Day We First Talked

“…Ri-Right! We’re entering the autumn season now. You’re definitely going to catch a cold if you wear that to sleep. Shouldn’t you wear something else instead?”

I said, trying my best to glance at her without blatantly staring. I couldn’t bear myself to look directly at Houno-san. Not when she was still naked save for an apron. 

She shook her head and fidgeted as she responded to me.

“I’ll be fine. After all… I have A-kun by my side.”

“No, no, no… You think I’m a human heater or something? I don’t come with a feature that can warm other people, you know?”

“But you do. My body already feels warm just by having A-kun by my side.”

“….Tha-That’s because your heart and body are playing tricks on you! I don’t have a warming feature, okay?!”

“Please, don’t be so modest about yourself. I think if you’d just hold me in your arms once, you would understand. You would see how quickly my body temperature and my skin tone changed.”

“Like I said, that’s not because of me…”

I sighed, realizing we were only going in circles. If I kept disagreeing with her, she might end up closing the distance between us even further. She would end up pressing her incredibly distracting body against me. If that happened, I doubt I could maintain my sanity. Houno-san was a very dangerous person. She was a stalker. A genuine stalker. Until I could change her way of thinking with my confinement plan, it would be best to avoid getting in a risqué situation with her…. Probably.

“By the way… Houno-san, can I ask you something?”

“Yes? What is it, darling?”

“That! Can you just call me A-kun for now? I mean, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing either, but… Let’s just stick with A-kun for now.”

“Ufufu~ I understand, Aogi-sama…. Kyaa!”

As she said that, Houno-san cupped both her cheeks with both hands, looking bashful. Her hips swayed back and forth, causing those two ample mountains of hers to jiggle. I quickly averted my gaze elsewhere. With my eyes away from her, I finally asked her the things I originally wanted to ask. 

“A-Anyway… There’s something I’m curious about…”

“Feel free to ask me anything, A-kun. I will even share my deepest secret with you, A-kun.”

“Thank you for your generosity… Alright. Houno-san…”

“Yes?”

“Houno-san, why did you decide to stalk someone like me..?”

“Why…?”

“Ye-Yeah… To put it simply… I mean, it might sound strange for me to say it myself, but I’m curious just why you fell for someone like me.”

“…”

“Ah….! I-It’s totally fine if you don’t want to answer it! I-If you actually don’t like me and you’re just trying to use me, that’s fine too!”

“…I…”

“I-I’m sorry for asking! I’m sorry for acting so haughty! Especially to someone as beautiful as you, Houno-san!”

I scratched myself, slipping deeper into a valley of self-deprecation. I hated this side of myself. I should be more confident. I knew I should, but… 

“It’s okay. I’m willing to give you my answer and I don’t have any intention of using you. Neve. I genuinely like you, A-kun. I like you, from the bottom of my heart.”

She chuckled softly. She then cast her gaze slightly downward before she continued. 

“Let’s see… Was it around May..? Or June? I started living alone when I entered university, but I ended up feeling homesick…”

“Huh…?”

I was a bit surprised. I didn’t take Houno-san for the type to experience something like that. 

“I’m a bit awkward, so I can’t make friends easily and I didn’t join any clubs either. I just kept going back and forth between school and home. I didn’t have anyone to talk to. Every night, I would call my mom and I even thought about quitting university so I could enroll somewhere closer to home.”

“I see…”

“Yes. But then, one day.. It was raining and my laundry wouldn’t dry. I decided to use a coin laundry near the Chinese restaurant.”

“Oh? That place? I think I’ve been to that place too.”

“Yes.”

Nodding, Houno-san smiled sweetly.

“I met you for the first time in that place and we talked for a bit.”

“H-Huh..?! Is that so?!”

“Yes, but it’s understandable that you don’t remember it, A-kun. After all, I was wearing a black hat and a mask. Most of my face was hidden by them.”

“I-I see…”

“I was in a slump back then. It couldn’t be open.”

“…And yet, you’re being very frank and blunt right now.”

“That’s because it is you, A-kun.  I wouldn’t show this embarrassing side of myself to just anyone. You’re the only one special to me.”

“…”

It was truly amazing that she could say those embarrassing lines so easily like that. Unable to look at her, I just averted my gaze and forced a smile. I couldn’t even say anything back. 

“I talked with you at the coin laundry. I found out that you were a first year student from the same university as me and that you were in the humanities department.”

“…I-I see…”

“Then, I started talking about my troubles. About my loneliness… About how troubled am I… “

“…Now that you mention it, I think I might remember something…”

Of course, I couldn’t exactly remember what we talked about, but I had a vague memory of talking with an unfamiliar woman at the coin laundry. 

“Do you? Then, do you remember what you told me, A-kun?”

“Sorry, I only have a vague idea. I don’t remember that much. But knowing me, I doubt I said something clever or anything. I probably just said something casual and light.”

“Indeed. You didn’t say anything deep or anything. Just something casual and light, but they made me incredibly happy…”

“…!!”

Suddenly, Houno-san closed the distance between us even further. She leaned her beautiful face close to mine. 

“And at that time, I suddenly fell for you, A-kun.”

She said, chuckling softly. I was perplexed. I found myself stumbling over my words.

“Wha-Wha-What did I say to you..?!”

At that question, Houno-san put her index finger to her lips and said. 

“It’s a secret.”

Every single gesture of hers felt so calculated…

“Let’s keep this a secret until the right time comes. Now then. A-kun, would you like to take a bath with me? I will not just wash your back, but I will wash everything in front too.”

“No, thank you. Please go in by yourself first.”

I said so and much to my surprise, Houno-san obeyed my words without any hesitation. Her steps seemed usually light, like she was feeling so happy. I turned my back to her and looked out the window, pondering what I had said to her back then.
