Chapter 36: Something I Want to Create Together

To put it bluntly, I grew up in the countryside. It was a small town with only a few residents in it, where you could see the sea after walking just a little while. Being able to see the sea meant that during the warmer months, people could go swimming or go fishing, but unfortunately… I didn’t do much of either. I didn’t really know why either. Of course, if someone invited me, I’d go along and swim with them, but I never took the initiative myself. Looking back, I felt like I had wasted my chance to enjoy my hometown more. I should’ve done more things unique to my hometown while I lived there. 

But, I tried not to dwell on my regrets too much. Recently I started thinking that since the past couldn’t be changed, I should focus on the future. I had been living my life in that way ever since then. I thought that I should live in a way to prevent myself from regretting my past again. 

While watching the fish swimming at the aquarium and seeing the dolphin show, I was once again reminded of that resolve. 

“So, Monoda-kun. I have a question for you. Do you know why I invited you all to go to the karaoke box?”

The aquarium tour was nearing its end and after we had finished watching the dolphin show and the other aquarium, I was sitting on a bench in front of the souvenir shop with Miyako-san when she asked me that question. On the other hand, Neiko-san was busy browsing the items sold inside the shop enthusiastically. 

“…Ummm… Is this one of those outrageous questions again…?”

“Hm? What? What do you mean by outrageous?”

“…Well, you know… Those borderline R18 questions…”

I said and Miyako-san chuckled scornfully before she said. 

“I’m not sure what kind of thing you’re imagining now, but don’t worry. It’s fine.”

“Ri-Right…”

“By the way, when did I ever talk to you about anything related to R18 stuff? I don’t discuss vulgar topics like that.”

“I see. So basically it’s better if I don’t take Miyako-san’s words at face value. I understand now. Thank you.”

After receiving my words of thanks, Miyako-san asked again. 

“What do you mean by that?”

Miyako-san tucked a strand of her lustrous hair behind her ear and continued on. 

“To put it bluntly, I chose a karaoke box to set the mood for the evening.”

“Haaaaaaaaaaah…”

I sighed deeply.

I shouldn’t have asked. I really don’t understand her.

“It’s fine. I understand you still don’t understand about the world of adult dating. No, not just you. Neiko too. That’s why, I will make sure to set the mood properly for you. With this, you can head straight to a hotel without any worry. You don’t even need to go home after this. Rest assured, just leave everything to me.”

“I’m sorry, if we’re going to the karaoke anyway, could I be allowed to sing like normal at least…?”

I said with a resigned tone, but Miyako-san peered close to me. Her voice was filled with so much energy as she exclaimed. 

“What are you talking about?!”

I had this deep urge to throw that question back at her, but I knew if I did that, I would be pushing myself into yet another troublesome conversation, so I bit my tongue. 

“Do you understand?! The end of a date isn’t just about having dinner together! You need to set the mood! Entice her with small, but meaningful gestures! You have to plan your date thoroughly, you understand?!”

“…Yes…”

“Allow me to be frank again. You and Neiko are still wet behind the ears! Look over there! My daughter is gazing at the dolphin plush so innocently like that! Tonight, you’re going to turn that virgin girl into a woman! You understand?!”

“Ah, my apologies. I got carried away.”

“Well, as long as you understand. Alright. We’re going to have lunch now. Remember, the day has only just begun. I’m counting on you, Monoda-kun!”

“…Yes.”

I said and stood up along with Miyako-san. Neiko-san, who had been holding the dolphin plush, smiled when she saw us and walked over toward us.

After leaving the aquarium, we took the train from the nearest station to get to the area nearest to Chinatown. There, we took a taxi to get straight to Chinatown. The cityscape I saw through the train window felt refreshingly new. Sure, I had walked through the downtown area with Neiko-san before, but since it was night time back then, the scenery I was seeing during the bright daylight felt like a brand new sight to me. 

“Monoda-kun, is this your first time in Chinatown?”

Miyako-san asked while we were in the taxi.

“…Huh?! Ah… Yes, it is my first time.”

“Then make sure you enjoy it today. We can try all various food stalls and eat while walking too.”

Fumu, fumu. I see. Walking while eating, huh?

“Neiko-san, have you been to Chinatown before?”

I asked Neiko-san, who was sitting next to me. She had been staring at my profile the whole time instead of the window. Startled by my question, she quickly lowered her gaze. Seemingly embarrassed, she muttered her answer, moving her mouth shyly. 

“Long time ago… I went to Chinatown in Kanagawa… I was on a trip with my family…”

I realized I might have made a mistake by not giving her a warning before asking that question. I ended up making her feel embarrassed. 

“But Neiko, this is your first time in the Chinatown in Hyogo, right?”

Miyako-san asked and Neiko-san nodded quietly. 

“Isn’t it nice, Monoda-kun? You get to share your first time with Neiko.”

“…W-Well, I guess…”

Dearest Mother, please remember, the taxi driver is here with us. What if he caught your not-so-subtle innuendo? He will think of you as a pervert.

“…A-kun…”

“Yeah?”

While I was begging to Miyako-san in my heart, Neiko-san gripped my hand and gave me an upturned eyes. Her gaze, which was locked at me, seemed to tremble a bit. My heart immediately skipped a beat upon witnessing this sight. 

“A-kun, what kind of Chinese food do you like?”

I was wondering what kind of question she would throw at me, but surprisingly enough, she asked me a perfectly ordinary question. But still, it felt so endearing to see her giving me such a sweet gaze when asking something so ordinary. I stared at the sky from the window to give her question some thought. 

“Let’s see… I like a lot of things, but I guess… My top two for now should be mapo tofu and chop suey.”

“Ooooh…! Oooohhh…!”

Neiko-san’s eyes sparkled brightly at my answer. 

“What about you, Neiko-san? Do you like mapo tofu too?”

“I like mapo tofu but my absolute favorite is chop suey! I often make chop suey myself and I’m good at making dumplings too!”

“Ooh~ Dumplings, huh? In that case, let’s make them together sometime. We can make it from scratch, including the wrapping.”

“Yes…! I’d love to make them together with you, A-kun…! We can talk about a lot of stuff while making them…”

Just the two of us. 

Perhaps because of how excited Neiko-san was while talking about that, the driver broke into a smile and said to us. 

“You two seem very close.”

Both Neiko-san and I turned bashful at that. We could only give him vague responses, but Miyako-san suddenly let out a laugh full of ominous implications before she said… 

“Of course. The two of them just spent their first night together yesterday.”

What an outrageous thing to say to a stranger. I nearly spat out in shock. The driver looked visibly flustered while Miyako-san only chuckled. As for Neiko-san, she went completely silent with her ears turning bright red. I should’ve denied it right away. By not saying anything, we were basically confirming Miyako-san’s accusation. 

“You two, make sure to cherish each other, okay?”

“”Ye-Yes…””

Neiko-san and I nodded timidly in unison, our voices small and bashful.
