Cheating and Encounter (2)
“We’re all going to a family restaurant, tonight. You should come too, Miyauchi-kun!”
“I’ll pass. I’m eating at home today. But thanks for the invite, Kisaragi. You’re always so kind.”
“P-Praising me won’t get you anything, you know…!”
“Well, enjoy Christmas.”
“Yeah! You too, Miyauchi-kun! Let me know if anything happens, okay.”
“Yeah.”
Even though I’m already home, Kisaragi is still looking out for me.
She’s a really good friend…but she doesn’t have to worry about me. She should just enjoy Christmas with everyone. Yet, she even went out of her way to message me on Line. Well, I guess it’s natural—after all, we’ve spent a lot of time together. Having someone to rely on is really a blessing.
After school, I sent a Line message to Umi right away, but she still hasn’t replied.
She did say she’ll be busy on Christmas Day…so I guess it can’t be helped.
But…if she’s with that guy somewhere…no, no—stop thinking about that! I’ll call Umi tomorrow and ask about it her directly. No matter how much I think about it now, I won’t get any answers.
I’ll ask her tomorrow…
“There’s no point dwelling on this all night. I should just go to sleep. It’s not like I have anything better to do anyway.”
I lie down on my bed.
There’s no point in thinking about unpleasant things. And besides, I haven’t even asked her about it yet…that guy could be just a relative, or maybe there’s something going on that I don’t know about. Yeah…there must be some explanation. For now, I should just sleep.
Don’t think about it…Kanata.
“……”
I keep repeating those words to myself.
……
Knock, knock.
A knocking sound echoes from the door.
I thought I was just imagining things, so I just ignore it and try to sleep.
But then—
knock, knock!
The time now is 5:40 PM. Who could it be at this hour? Could it be…Umi?
She does know my address, so I hurriedly check my phone. But there is no message from her.
Then…who is it? Who’s knocking…? This is kind of scary.
“W-Who is it?”
“……”
I ask so, but there’s no response.
And then—
knock, knock!
The knocking continues.
“Alright, alright…”
I have no choice but to open the door.
The moment I open the door, the person outside immediately hugs me.
It all happened in a blink of an eye that I can’t react. I just freeze in place.
“Ugh…!”
A pleasant scent wafts into my nose. A girl…? But she’s wearing a hoodie, so I can’t tell who she is.
Wait—why is she hugging me so tightly?
“Ah…umm…Who are you?”
“Ughh…”
“Umm…do you know me?”
The girl nods repeatedly. I’m really confused right now.
Since moving here, the only girls I know who know my address is my girlfriend, Umi and my good friend, Kisaragi.
How does she know my address? Could we have met somewhere before?
Then, the girl hugging me slowly takes off her hood.
“Hmm? Ah…!”
“Ugh…I-It’s been a while…K-Kanata!”
It’s the girl I bumped into on the street.
And she knows my name.
“Ah! No way…C-Could it be…Hina? Hina!?”
This girl…is she really Hina? Seriously? How many years has it been?
I’m happy to see her again, but…why now?
Because…Hina is…Umi’s younger twin sister.
That familiar feeling I had when I first saw her…it must’ve been because she looks so much like Umi.
But…never mind that.
What is happening between me and Umi has nothing to do with Hina. Hina is Hina.
“Come on in…it’s cold outside.”
“Yeah…”
I can’t believe she showed up at my place out of the blue…
It’s something I could never expect, I don’t know what to do.
The Hina I thought I’d left behind in the countryside is now standing right in front of me.
I’m confused in many ways.
“Wait, how did you even get my address…?”
“Umm…Kanata’s mom told me…”
“I see.”
Well, since she came all this way…
Maybe talking with Hina after so long will help me forget about Umi, even just a little.
“Kanata…what are you doing alone today even though it’s Christmas? What about Umi?”
“Eh? Ah…Umi said she’s busy today.”
“I see…I bet she’s off cheating somewhere right now.”
“Eh? Hina…? What did you just say?”
“Hmm? Christmas only comes once a year, so there’s no reason to be ‘busy’ right? If it were me, I would have spent the whole day with my boyfriend.”
“I-I see. You’re such a kind girl, Hina. Haha…”
“……”
The word cheating made me flinch.
“……”
Unlike Umi, Hina is calm. Her calm voice scares me a little.
Even so, Hina hasn’t changed much since back then. Long black hair, those perfectly balanced eyes, nose, and lips—Hina is a truly beautiful girl.
I know it’s a little late to say this, but my first love wasn’t Umi, it was Hina.
Just like back then, those big eyes are looking at me.
But it doesn’t matter anymore—I’ve been rejected.
I have no regrets, but seeing her face makes me remember the past just a little.
She is still as cute as ever. Her atmosphere is completely different from Umi’s. No, I’ve decided not to think about Umi today. Forget about her, Kanata.
Damn it…
“Do you…not have any plans today?”
“Nope. My Christmas plans got cancelled, and I don’t have anything to do today either, so I just slept all day. Ah! Right, I have some cake. Want some?”
“Yeah.”
“Wait here. What do you want to drink? Coffee? Cocoa?”
“Then…cocoa!”
“Got it.”
I quickly prepare the cake and cocoa and continue talking with Hina.
“You’re not going to eat, Kanata?”
“I’m… fine.”
“This is the cake you were supposed to eat with Umi, right? Are you sure it’s okay if I have it?”
“Yeah. It’s fine…no one else is going to eat it anyway…”
For some reason, my voice starts getting quieter.
“Hmm?”
“N-No! It’s nothing! Haha…”
Actually, when I got home, I was about to eat the cake right away…but Umi’s face popped into my mind, and I couldn’t bring myself to eat it. Throwing it away felt like a waste, and I didn’t know what to do with it, so I ended up giving it to Hina…but honestly, it still feels kind of weird.
That is the cake that I bought to eat with Umi after all.
“Sorry…I didn’t mean for it to be like this.”
“Why are you apologizing…? It’s fine, I like cake.”
“…thanks, Hina.”
“……”
What is this situation? Instead of Umi, her twin sister Hina is the one eating this cake.
But watching her eat it so happily…somehow, it eases my heart a little.
It’s fine. Just forget about it, Kanata.
“Hey, Kanata…”
“Yeah?”
“Why are you crying…?”
“……”
I knew it…I can’t hold it in. I keep trying to forget about it, but no matter what, I can’t erase the image of those two together from my mind.
“You can’t stop thinking about Umi cheating on you, can you, Kanata?”
“…Hina? What…did you just say…?”
“……”
Hina lowers the fork she’s holding and gently wipes away my tears.
Does she know about it? Does Hina know whether Umi is really cheating on me or not?
I’m getting more confused.
This whole situation…
“……”
Oooh, a twin sister, for once. That doesn’t happen often.
