ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
By the time lunch break ended, we managed to get a rough plan of what to do thanks to the strategy meeting we held.
“Thank you for all your help, Suou-kun. I’m really grateful for your help.”
“Don’t worry about it. I’m already on board with this ship. I don’t have any intention to disembark now.”
After considering everyone’s schedules and various circumstances, we decided to have the breakup conversation to be done on Sunday afternoon at a café in the shopping district we had visited yesterday. People from our school were less likely to spot them there and if things got messy, Yamachi would think twice before escalating it even further.
“…But still, are you sure about it?”
“About what?”
Kushina fidgeted nervously, seemingly hesitant to say her next words.
“For you to come along on Sunday…. Are you sure about it?”
“Sure. I don’t have any other plans and I don’t have a part-time job this Sunday.”
Of course, I didn’t have any intention to participate in their conversation. I just wanted to watch over them from a safe distance. In that way, I could intervene if anything were to happen between them.
Though… I honestly hope I don’t need to intervene at all. This is their problem. They need to resolve this problem between themselves and as a mere outsider, I don’t want to come in between their relationship problems.
“But still… I can’t help it. I feel bad for dragging you into my mess on your precious day off…”
“I’m doing this because I want to. You don’t need to feel guilty about what I decided to do on my day off, Kushina.”
“But…”
Kushina cast her eyes down apologetically. In response to that, I flicked her forehead lightly.
“Ouch! What was that for?!”
“Because you won’t stop brooding over it. Just think of me as a freebie. I’m tagging along because I want to, okay? Stop worrying about it.”
“Muuu….!”
Her cheeks reddened in protest as she glared at me, but eventually, she stopped talking back. Then, as if she suddenly remembered something, she exclaimed.
“Oh!”
She stared at me, her eyes wide.
“Suou-kun, take your phone out.”
“Okay, but why?”
“I need to add you on LINE. It’s going to be troublesome if we don’t have a way to get in touch with each other, right?”
“Fair enough.”
“I nodded as I took my phone out of my pocket. It felt a bit weird to be exchanging contact information this late in the game, but given everything that happened yesterday, I guess we just didn’t have the right timing to exchange contact information until now. I showed Kushina the QR code to my account and she immediately scanned it with her phone.
“Okay! All set! I will send you a sticker to test it out.”
Before I could say anything back, she already sent me a bunch of cute cat stickers. The constant ping from the notifications made me frown a bit and Kushina giggled at my reaction.
“Good. Looks like you received my message without any problem.”
“…Thank you for the message…”
But still, do you really need to spam me with stickers? Well, whatever. It’s best not to dwell on that.
At least, we could stay in touch on the day of her meeting with Yamachi. I just hoped their conversation would proceed without a hitch.
I was putting my phone back into my pocket when Kushina said to me again.
“Ah, right. Suou-kun, are you in our class LINE group? I don’t think I’ve seen you in our class group chat.”
Kushina suddenly asked.
Oh… So we have a class LINE group, huh… Class LINE group….
I hesitated for a moment before shaking my head.
“No, it’s fine. You don’t need to add me. Seems like it’s more trouble than it’s worth.”
“I knew it. Well, I already expect you’d answer that way, Suou-kun.”
“…Sorry for being unnecessarily uncooperative.”
It annoyed me that she had predicted my response so accurately like that, so I grumbled a bit. But to my surprise, Kushina was smiling proudly, as if she had won something.
“What’s with that face?”
“Fufufu~ After all, that means I’m the only one who knows your LINE ID, right? So right now, I’m basking in my superiority complex thanks to that.”
“Don’t treat me like rare collectibles.”
“I mean, you are. Just to be sure, have you given anyone else at school your contact information?”
“…No. You’re the first one, Kushina.”
“See? I knew it~”
Kushina smiled happily. Her smile was absolutely beaming.
“Which means, I’m the first girl to have your contact information, right?”
“Oi, the way you’re phrasing that…”
You’re still dating someone else. Don’t say things that might cause misunderstandings, even if you’re planning to break up with your boyfriend this weekend.
Laughing lightly, as if teasing me, Kushina then stood up.
“Well, now that we’ve exchanged contact information, I will head back to class first.”
“Alright, see you later.”
People would definitely start gossiping if we were to go back together. Hence why, it was best to avoid being seen with Kushina, especially in school. Just before Kushina opened the door to leave, she turned back to me.
“Thanks again for sharing your lunch today, Suou-kun! It was really delicious! I’ll be sure to return the favor!”
She said before she ran to the classroom. I was the only one remaining in this place with only five minutes left until lunch break ended. I took my phone from my pocket again and opened LINE. My friends list didn’t even reach double digits, and that included my family and my coworker. I stared at Kushina’s account. A strange emotion started taking root in my heart upon seeing this newly added account.
“Who would’ve thought the very first friend I made in high school would be Kushina.”
If I told myself this a week ago, I probably wouldn’t have believed it. We live in completely different worlds, but well… Life is full of surprises after all.
That said…
“Wait a minute. She said she will repay the favor… Doesn’t that mean we’re trapped in some weird never ending loop?”
I doubt she would treat me to another jumbo meal again, but knowing Kushina… I had a feeling she might try to give me something that was more expensive than what I had given to her. This made me feel a bit uneasy… I really didn’t need her to pay me back or anything. I did what I did simply because I wanted to and as long as she enjoyed the food I made and smiled while eating it… That was more than enough for me.
“……Well, whatever.”
That’s probably just the way she is. I just need to negotiate with her later, so she won’t go overboard with it.
With a small sigh, I decided to head back to the classroom as well.
