Chapter 31 100x Gravity Training
The day after our inspection of Ashgano Cape, I decided to start training in preparation for the tasks ahead.
Even though we arrived early, the critical construction work was still in the process of restarting. My security duties would only commence as originally planned, a week later.
This meant Jasmine and I would have a week of free time. Wanting to spend it as productively as possible, I decided to start with some training.
First, I had to create some training equipment. In the lounge of the inn we had rented for our stay on Ashgano Peninsula, I took out the magic stone from the flaming bird that I acquired yesterday and began inscribing a magic circle on it.
“What are you doing?” Jasmine, who had somehow made her way to the lounge without me noticing, asked.
“I’m making a gravity manipulation device. I thought I’d do some training,” I replied.
I’ve heard that the monsters from the Inferno Continent are terrifying. Since I’ve been entrusted with the task of protecting the workers from them, I need to become much stronger. That’s the main reason I decided to train.
During the test, the magical tools provided could only create a device with three times the gravity. However, with this flaming bird’s magic stone, I can make a tool that adjusts gravity up to 100 times. Three times is practically negligible, but with this, I should be able to do some proper strength training.
There’s a saying about doing your best and leaving the rest to fate. Even if it’s a last-minute effort, trying to do my best is important.
“I’ve never heard of a magical tool that can manipulate gravity. But why do you need it?” Jasmine asked.
“I need to become strong enough to defeat the monsters from the Inferno Continent,” I replied.
“But… you were able to defeat them just fine yesterday…”
“That’s probably a local species. Even if it was from the other continent, it was likely a monster that lost a territorial battle and fled here. It’s far from the true strength of the monsters from over there,” I thought as I continued working on the magic tool.
When it was finally completed, I realized I couldn’t change the gravity here inside the inn without risking its collapse, so I moved to a nearby open space. Jasmine, for some reason, followed me.
“Stay back a bit. If you stand there, you’ll be subjected to 100 times the gravity,” I warned her as I prepared to activate the device, noticing she was standing right behind me.
“100 times!? No way!” she exclaimed, quickly moving away.
With her safely out of range, I activated the device. My entire body felt immensely heavier, and the ground within the effect area of the magic tool sank about 2 centimeters.
Time to start with some handstand push-ups.
“One… two… three…” I counted as I began my exercises.
“Looks like you’re just doing normal exercises… but I wonder what 100 times gravity feels like,” Jasmine mused aloud as she tossed a small stone into the effect area of the device.
The moment the stone entered the area, it stopped its arc and fell straight down, embedding itself 10 centimeters into the ground.
“Training under such conditions is insane…” Jasmine murmured in a trembling voice as she watched.
While she was observing this, I finished about 30 push-ups. I had planned to continue with squats and shadow boxing afterward, but I realized I needed to adjust my plans.
Despite the seemingly daunting concept of 100 times gravity, my current body weight was less than five tons, so it didn’t feel like much of a workout.
I needed to increase the load, at least double it. I took out the sword I had made during the test using my storage magic.
Time for some sword swings.
“Is that… the Orichalcum-Adamantite alloy sword?” Jasmine asked.
“Yeah,” I confirmed.
“In this environment!?” she exclaimed.
When Jasmine saw the sword, her mouth fell open in shock. Ignoring her, I resumed my training.
“One… two… three…” I counted as I swung.
“Is Hadar really human…?” Jasmine murmured.
Of course I’m human. Why else would I be aiming to be a professional? I thought, mentally retorting. After about five minutes of practice swings, I started to get bored.
The load was just right, but doing repetitive solo exercises gets monotonous quickly.
I stopped the device and decided to create another magic tool.
“Finished already? Well, of course. Training for long periods in such a space, even you, Hadar…” Jasmine seemed to think my training for the day was over, but that wasn’t the case.
“No, I just thought I’d switch to a more practical form of training,” I explained.
I took out two of the magic stones from the burning bird I had yesterday.
With one of them, I made a gravity control device with more precise adjustment capabilities than usual. With the other, after carving a specific magic circle, I attached numerous metal parts created through alchemy.
The final product took the form of a large wolf.
“Practical training?” Jasmine echoed.
“Yeah. A magic tool that simulates a monster,” I clarified.
What I had made was a magic tool known as a Metal Wolf. It is used primarily as a hunting dog or, as I intended, for mock battles. According to a book I read, its performance was comparable to a monster called Fenrir. Having never encountered a real Fenrir, I couldn’t say for sure.
This Metal Wolf was constructed with an inner structure of Mithril-Orichalcum alloy and an outer coating of three-centimeter-thick Orichalcum-Adamantite alloy. The concept was to keep it from becoming too heavy while ensuring it wouldn’t be easily broken by a sword.
The major difference from a standard Metal Wolf was the internal gravity control device I added. This allowed the Metal Wolf’s body to negate the 100 times gravity, simulating a fair training scenario where only I bore the weight handicap.
With everything ready, I activated both the gravity control device and the Metal Wolf, and resumed my training.
Facing a wolf with decent agility under 100 times gravity was quite challenging, indicating it was a good training session.
Moreover, unlike the monotonous practice swings, this training was enjoyable.
“What is this scene… I can’t even comprehend it…” Jasmine stood outside the effect area, staring at me with her mouth agape.
Ignoring her, I continued my training for several hours.
