Rikka’s hostility
Rumors were spreading within the saloon that Shuuto might be dating Nonoka. It was Shuuto’s day off, and he faced these rumors while preparing for a meeting with Rikka.
It was a Thursday, a weekday.
Shuuto arrived at the meeting place, the fountain in front of the station, after styling his hair with wax, wearing a white T-shirt, a gray jacket, and wrinkled black pants. The agreed-upon meeting time with Rikka was 1:00 PM. Shuuto, who had driven here, arrived 20 minutes early because he didn’t encounter any traffic signals.
“Well, it’s better not to keep her waiting, I guess.”
He didn’t think it was ‘long.’ He sat on a bench, using his smartphone to pass the time. After a while, someone called out to him from behind.
“Excuse me, Onii-san.”
It was a girl with chestnut hair, seemingly a college student, with a lively and youthful fashion sense.
“Uh, yes? Can I help you?”
She spoke with a musical note at the end, like calling someone ‘Onii-san.’ Shuuto thought it might be Rikka, but it wasn’t.
“Oh, sorry! Do you know what time it is now? I forgot my smartphone and…”
“Oh, it’s… 12:52 now.”
Shuuto checked his wristwatch and told her the current time.
“Thank you! You have a cool watch!”
“Haha, I like it too. But forgetting your smartphone can be inconvenient. I’ve been there a few times myself.”
“Yeah, exactly! I can’t live without my smartphone.”
“Oh, if you want, I can check the train schedule for you. Is that okay?”
“Well…”
Shuuto, adept at customer service and communication, hadn’t given the initiative to the girl who approached him.
“That’s the first time someone’s replied like that…”
While the girl was already revealing her thoughts, she continued skillfully.
“Huh, there’s some vibration from my bag… Oh, there it is! I found my smartphone!”
“Well, that’s a relief.”
“By the way… you already knew, right?”
“Yes.”
It would be embarrassing if it was a misunderstanding, but he was sure due to the way she asked. Shuuto nodded and smiled.
“Well, I’ll be straightforward! Would you like to hang out with us? We thought you might be bored.”
“Huh? With us…?”
“Pointing to the girls over there, too!”
She indicated the two girls near the station. It seemed they were planning to hang out as a group of three.
“You’re alone, right, Onii-san?”
She asked with a smiling face, trying to catch him off guard, but Shuuto was alert.
“No, I have another one in my stomach already.”
And he touched his belly.
“Huh!? Oh…”
“That’s the situation.”
Using metaphorical language, Shuuto gently declined.
“Why, why can’t you? Karaoke, bowling, anywhere is fine!”
“It puts a strain on my stomach.”
“Karaoke might not be like that?”
“I’m the type who dances vigorously while singing.”
“Pfft, what’s that!”
She finally burst out laughing.
“Ah, this is no good. I picked the wrong target. I declared that I would definitely succeed with friends.”
“If I hadn’t had a meeting, I might have accepted the invitation.”
“That’s definitely a lie. It’s written all over your face. ‘No picking up allowed.'”
She had already entered resignation mode, but now she approached from a different angle.
“How about just exchanging contact information? Honestly, I thought if there’s a chance, it would be nice to hang out.”
“I’ll give you my business card if that’s okay.”
“Huh, really? I thought you’d refuse.”
“I won’t refuse.”
Then, Shuuto took out his wallet and handed her the business card with both hands.
“I’ll be waiting for you at the beauty salon.”
“Oh, Onii-san, you’re a hairstylist! No wonder you’re so stylish… Wait, isn’t this a sales pitch?”
“Haha, sorry. You can throw it away right away if you want, just use it as a funny story with your friends.”
“Oh, maybe… did you give me your business card because I said, ‘I declared that I would definitely succeed with friends’? So now I can say, ‘I got a business card! Technically, it’s a success!’?”
She made a logical guess, showing off her intelligence. And it seemed like she was quite confident in her assumption.
“I’ll leave it to your imagination. Just looking at the business card is a positive for us.”
“Hmm, Onii-san, you’re really good… This is the first time I’ve thought the other person was so difficult.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
The two engaged in an exchange that didn’t seem like a typical pickup.
“By the way, are you going on a date from now on?”
“It’s not with a girlfriend, but it feels like that.”
They entered what seemed like an after-talk.
“Um, Onii-san, your girlfriend must be really cute, right?”
“Well, she’s a bit selfish, clingy, and childish.”
“Wow, you’re so smitten…”
“Haha, sorry about that.”
And so, they continued this casual conversation for about seven minutes.
At the right moment, another voice chimed in.
“Hey, what’s this? Are you getting hit on?”
Looking exasperated, Rikka, with the hairstyle set by Shuuto at the salon, appeared. She wore white puff-sleeved underwear with a flared hem and denim shorts with a brand belt, showcasing her long legs.
With her great figure, exposure, and beautiful appearance, Rikka captivated the attention of those around her. She casually grabbed the hem of Shuuto’s clothes.
“Oh, I wasn’t really getting hit on. Just a casual acquaintance.”
“Hmm… Well, that’s okay then. My boyfriend is always taking care of me.”
Rikka was on high alert, emanating a wary look, putting pressure on the situation.
“Oh, no, it’s nothing.”
“Is the conversation over?”
“Yeah, we were just about to part ways.”
“I see.”
With Rikka’s arrival for their meeting, it was time to part ways.
“Well then, we’ll be going. Thank you for talking to us.”
“Y-yeah…”
“Okay, let’s go, Shuuto…”
“Wait!”
“Not ‘wait.'”
Rikka didn’t miss a beat. She intertwined her arm with Shuuto’s as if to appeal and led him away, pulling him forward without even looking back.
Left behind, the other girl was soon joined by her friends.
“Hey… Wasn’t that Rikka from Pop Berry?”
“The model, right!? I thought so too!”
“I might have hit on the boyfriend of some famous person…”
In awe of the appearance of a known model, they conversed.
“But he seemed to be having so much fun talking. Maybe it wasn’t that bad…?”
“No way! Different league! That guy was totally leading the conversation.”
“Once again, you approached the boyfriend of an amazing person…”
“Got overwhelmed by a model, huh…”
Such conversations were happening in front of the station.
