Chapter 2: The reason for being disgruntled, an unusual gathering.
Time passed, and it was the break after the fifth period.
In the end, Hiiragi would only keep glaring at me and didn’t take an action whatsoever.
Well, I do try to act like I wasn’t bothered by Hiiragi’s stares, but even the fact that I was trying to act that way clearly meant I was already quite seriously bothered.
I’ve reached my limit now. I took out my phone and sent Hiiragi a message.
“Excuse me, is something wrong?”
For the time being, I decided to ask directly.
And, the message got read immediately, as her reply came.
“Nope, nothing really.”
No, no, no. It’s impossible to just brush this all off just like that! I thought to myself as I awkwardly typed a response.
“There’s no way it’s nothing! You’ve been glaring at me since morning. What’s going on? Are you trying to take out your loneliness from being dumped by Ryogoku-kun on me? Have you fallen in love for me?”
I sent the provocative message and glanced over at Hiiragi.
But, being shot with a murderous look in return, I quickly apologized.
“Sorry, I got carried away.”
The message had the read sign, but no reply came back.
Crap… Don’t tell me, is this where she is extremely mad at me? —Am I going to get killed?
Just as I was getting dreadful over this unlikely tragedy, Hiiragi finally replied.
“I heard from Sayo that you turned her down.”
So, it was about that huh.
“Yeah. But what about it? I just did what I said I would, there’s no reason for you to give me that look.”
“That’s true, but…”
After a brief pause, Hiiragi sent another message.
“I just thought that when you would reject her, you would also completely break off everything you had with her until now. I never thought you would still stay friends with her.”
“Nope, that was just a normal social formality. I didn’t mean to give any hidden meaning by it.”
“Yeah, right. But deep down, you just don’t want to cut ties with Sayo, didn’t you? You rejected her just to keep up appearances, but you actually care about her, and that’s why you said you would stay friends with her instead, isn’t that what it is actually?”
“You’re overthinking it.”
“I wonder.”
“So, Is that why you were angry?”
“Not particularly, I’m not mad at all. I just thought that, given how big and hard you talked, you rather ended things quite half-assed.”
It’s clear from Hiiragi’s sharp words that, the fact that she is definitely not mad is quite clearly and absolutely a lie, moreover quite a blatant as well.
She’s right; at that time, I was determined to walk the solitary(bocchi) path. I planned to clearly and absolutely end things with Katase. But the situation, or rather my attitude towards her, changed things.
I have no intention of explaining this to Hiiragi. Since, I can only see it being taken as a shameless excuse if I do so.
“Well~, interpret it however you want. I just did what I had to do.”
“Yay~, Mister Half-Assed~.”
“Oh? Are you trying to buy a fight with me? Just so you know, if it is about verbal sparring, I am quite proficient and well at it myself. I am not going to hold back even if you’re a girl; I’ll be going in to make you cry if I am at that, keep in mind!”
I tried to respond to Hiiragi’s childish provocation with a joke, but there was no reply.
Arre? Was it that unfunny? Thinking that, I glanced over at Hiiragi.
As I thought, the class top-tier Hiiragi didn’t have time to even bother with me.
I wonder when, but a crowd had gathered around Hiiragi. It’s just that, there were more members than usual.
It’s not something new that the Hiiragi’s group and Ryogoku’s group go along well with each other. They are often seen hanging out with each other, so it’s a typical scene in everyday life.
however today, there seems like one another group had also joined them.
The slightly delinquent group led by Tachibana, the girl who sits right next to me.
