Chapter 14: Forward the one-way street was a dead end.
Since Ryogokuku confessed his feelings, Hiiragi’s meddling has been increasing day by day, and eventually her rough attitude was also getting noticeable as well.
Day in – Day out, I’m dragged into that vacant classroom, where I’m lectured about ‘how I should be more active on LINE with Sayo’, or ‘how I should make my next plans with Sayo quickly’, and things like ‘Ugh, this is why introvert loners are such a …’. Lately, everyday has been like this all the time.
But even that was not all. Maybe she got my LINE ID from Katase, that she started pestering me with continuous messages.
“Keeping aside your opinion, since it doesn’t matter; Sayo isn’t good with crowded places…”
And so, for today as well once again, it’s time for another lecture in the empty classroom, or rather more specifically, it’s the time right after being thoroughly scolded by her. Right now, since I have not taking any action whatsoever, Hiiragi is making plans for our activities all on her own.
At this point, it’s safe to say that what Hiiragi is doing is not in the level of just meddling anymore. But more like, it’s for her own sake as well.
She wants to bring Katase and me closer together for that as well. And ultimately, she probably intends to turn us into a romantic relationship… Thinking like that, it becomes clear who the mastermind behind the love letter prank was in the first place.
It’s Hiiragi. Her feelings are directed towards Ryogokuku, and Ryogokuku’s feelings are directed towards Katase. So, if she can get Katase get together with someone else, then all’s fine.
If that is done, Ryogokuku will have to give up on Katase. Plus, there’s the bonus of attacking him when he is at his weakest, that is, heartbroken. This also increases the chances of her love being reciprocated by him.
Hiiragi had a vague sense of where Ryogokuku’s feelings were directed towards, and thus she came up with that prank. The fact that it escalated after I heard Ryogokuku’s own confession is the best evidence for it.
And if that is so, then naturally, Katase must be playing her role in on it too. It’s not that she’s unaware of Hiiragi’s feelings; but rather, she’s just pretending to be ignorant towards it. That’s all there is to it.
[TL: I love this guy. Dem.]
I was completely fooled by her acting, which I didn’t even feel like an act at all. But well, then the one who really loves her friend here, is may be Katase all the time.
To support a friend’s love, she even accepted being in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship with someone whom she has no feelings for. That’s something which can’t be easily done for real.
[TL: His deductions are just so great.]
Why was I chosen as Katase’s partner? I can imagine easily. Maybe, Hiiragi thought of some shallow reason like, ‘Kazari-kun seems easy to handle’ or something along the lines.
However, it was a big miscalculation. Since I am only making it worse in retrospect, Hiiragi must be regretting all of it now, thinking it would have been better to choose someone else than me.
It was a careless mistake, in one word that can be understood.
But that doesn’t mean I’ll badmouth her. Hiiragi right now is, in a way, blind. She can only see a future where she wants to have reciprocal romantic feelings with Ryogokuku at all cost.
Just like I once was… Hiiragi is also a lost soul, losing herself in her unrequited love.
And moreover, she’s not just getting lost. She’s stuck in one place where there’s no way forward. And that is being converted into inconvenience and falling on top of me.
Neither of us benefits from this… So, it’s best to find another path in the end. Even if that path doesn’t lead to what Hiiragi is looking for, or desires. But it’s at least a better path than wasting time clinging onto me that much.
“…Say, Hiiragi.”
“What is it? I’m busy right now.”
I decide to confront Hiiragi as she grumpily replies while staring at her own smartphone.
“Isn’t it time we put an end to all this already, these pointless endeavours?”
