- 10: Making our way into the Hunt with the Four Grand Adventurers
As Abel and Reginold made it back to the mansion, just out of the mansion’s entrance stood Sir Loyd wearing a full set of armor.
And by his side was his wife Frey who was looking over his armor, checking if it was in good condition.
“Hmm, it looks like nothing is wrong with your armor dear, just be careful not to take too much from those demons. Otherwise, my father might complain again that you always bring it bent and broken.” said Frey as she had this annoyed expression.
“There’s nothing to worry dear, I’m with the other professional killers, nothing bad will happen to me.” he said as he assured his wife.
“Sir Loyd, I’ve returned with Abel.” said Reginold as he got off his horse.
“I’ve heard the details of the situation, should I really come and assist you?” asked Abel as he also got off the horse.
“Yes Abel, the more experienced hands the better. So here, wear this armor as protection. You will need it.” as Sir Loyd Handed Abel a chestplate and a pair of guantlets, Abel was somewhat nervous of the gift.
As he started wearing the armor, all of a sudden Sister Mary came to the front of the mansion to find that Abel was seen with such hevy armor.
“Abel? What are you doing? Why are you with the lord?” asked Sister Mary as she was worried about the tension the area brought in her arrival.
“Sister Mary…I, I’m only here to assist Sir Loyd under his request, please go back with the children.” said Abel.
“I heard what’s happening at the city…something dangerous is out there, you can’t go out right now.” she said.
“…” Abel could only stare at Sister Mary as she pleaded for Abel’s safety.
“…Sister Mary, do not worry, Abel will be with us in this quest. So please tend to the children and we will return at sundown.”
“But!”
“Please, he’s in safe hands. His ability to heal will be necessary in the quest.” said Sir Loyd.
“…!” being ordered by Sir Loyd, Sister Mary could not go against his words. Although she worries for Abel, she knows well enough just how capable he was. So she looked to Abel with teary eyes and held his hands…
“Be safe Abel, I will pray for you.” she said.
“Thank you sister.”
As sister mary left, with not having the courage to see Abel off, all of a sudden, the door from the mansion opened and revealed Faye wearing a set of armor. And with her, her friends were also standing by with their own weapons out and about.
“Father, I heard of the situation, please let us come too.” she said as she asked her father.
“No, I do not intend of having my daughter and her friends join us. Stay here, that is my order.” said Sir Loyd as he spoke with a strick tone.
“But I can help! We’ve experienced a battle many more times at the academy, we know how to fight.” said Faye as she pleaded with her father.
“She is right Sir Starfall, We’ve fought day after day in the academy. We are confident in our skill to assist in the fight. We won’t be a hindrance.” said Roderick as he supported faye’s words.
“I said no! Do not force me to use my title as the lord of this land to detain you three in the mansion. I do not wish to risk a life lost in the battle.” said Sir Loyd.
“But your bringing Abel along? Does Abel even have the experience to fight the monsters? He isn’t even a registered adventurer, how can you trust him?!” asked Faye in shock.
“…that is enough Faye, Go back to your room and stay there.” said her Mother as she intruded in her daughter’s stubborn appeal.
“But-”
“Faye, listen to me. Being reckless and being stubborn when you know nothing of the situation will put you at risk…it will put us at risk. Have you learned nothing of what you’ve experience in the academy?!”
“I…I’m sorry…I’ve overstepped my bounds.” as she said this, she retreated into her home along with her friends.
Seeing this, Sir Loyd jumped on to his horse and made their way to the location.
“Lets go.” said Sir Loyd as he rode with Reginold and Abel.
As they rode across the city’s streets, Abel was curious as to why he had to be involved. He wondered where the confidence was coming from in Sir Loyd’s trust for him compared to his daughter.
“Sir Loyd, I’m really curious about you bringing me along in this task. May I ask why you had the confidence to bring me along instead of your own daughter?” he asked.
“You can see it can’t you?” asked Sir Loyd.
“See what my lord?”
“Faye is nowhere near ready to be in a situation like this. She’s arrogant in what she learned in the academy and that arrogance will put her in the ground earlier than she could expect.”
“…Is that so?”
“Yes, she hasn’t yet even seen a demon before. Do you realize what that means?” he asked.
“…I do. Even for someone who is as brave as a lion won’t be able to take a step forward into a demon’s presence…they are that fearful.” said Abel as he spoke from experience.
“Yes, you are correct. In time she will one day join us like this…but for now, her heart isn’t fully ready yet to face the harshness of the demons and their capabilities.”
“Hmm I see.”
“Also, other than your experience with a demon before, the guild leader vouched for your strength. He said that without you, the chances of us defeating the enemy might be lower than expected. We’re grateful that you’re here with us Abel.” said Sir Loyd.
“Thank you sir. That means a lot.”
As the three of them continued on, they finally arrived at the city’s entrance. As they came by their, they were meet with guards watching over the walls and gate.
“Make way and let us through!” said Reginold as he ordered the guard wtching over the lever for the gate.
“B-but sir, we have orders to keep anyone from leaving the city.” as the guard said this, Sir Loyd stepped in and raised his helmet for his face to be revealed.
“I issued the order. So let us pass, now!”
“Sir Loyd!? Y-Yes sir! As you ordered sir!” as the guard saw the the City’s lord step in, they were surprised to find such a reveal, they quickly opened the gate for them and with it, Sir Lord, Reginold and Abel were able to exit the City’s gate.
“Now Reginold, lead the way for us to meet with the others.”
“Yes my lord.”
As Reginold lead Loyd and Abel across the dense forest that they entered, it took about 20 minutes of harsh riding for them to finaly arrive at the appointed location.
There by the distance in some of the trees, four armored adventurers were found standing around, monitoring the situation.
“Hmm? Oh, its them.” said a scraggly looking buff man who carried a large broadsword on his back. With hair as long and as white as snow, this man was the Guild Master of the adventurer guild in the city, and his name was Kingsley.
“Is it? Oh…it is.” said a woman who was dressed like a witch. Paired with her cresent devilish smile and hour-glass like body, her dark hair and and pointy had gave her the title, the Cresent Witch of the night, and her name was Evelyn.
“Hmm, Oh and they brought Abel with them.” said a man carrying a bow behind his back. He was a middle aged man with a sharp eye and sharp accuracy for handling the bow, and with the preparedness for anything hunter related, he was one of the top members of the guild. People named him Robin.
“Huh, you’re right. I thought Loyd would have been sensible enough to actually not involve the boy…but he did. Not that I mind though…the boy being here should help us a lot.” said the man who was wearing a long robe paired with his long beard that signified his great old age. This man was a great mage that showed great talents in magic. His name was Boffy.
“We’re you serious about having the kid join us Kingsley?” asked Evelyn who was quite skeptical about his involvement.
“Why not? The kid has potential. You should know, you even taught him a few skills aside from healing.” said Kingsley.
As Sir Loyd and the others finally arrived, Robin quickly briefed them on the situation, seeign a how he was the ranger of the group.
“Lets keep this quick, from what I saw, the demons lurking around the forest are “Tracker Demons.” Abel, these kinds of demons are fast and nimble, so be careful.” said Robin as he told Abel who seemed to not have experienced this kind of Demon.
“Okay, where are they currently now?” asked Sir Loyd.
“They are gathered in to groups…one is located somewhere near the farm just north of this forest. The people living there are already dead…We were too late to act on it.”
“I see, and the other?”
“The other group is found somewhere west of this forest. They are just hiding around the trees scouting for any passerby to come through.”
“So what do we do?” asked Abel.
“It would be faster for us to deal with them if we separate ourselves into two groups, but each group contains a dozen demons. There is only 7 of us…I think it would be best if we do this one at a time.” said Robin.
“Fine, lets do this one at a time then.” said Sir Loyd as he lead the group.
They didn’t wasted anytime at all. Time was precious in this moment. The first group they headed themselves into was the group hiding in the trees.
As they were getting closer, it didn’t take about about half mile in and Abel could already tell that demons were nearby.
“Do you feel that Abel?” asked Robin as he looked around.
“…Yeah, I feel it.”
“Good, never forget this. In our training, a demon’s presence is one of the most vile and insuffarable presence’s we know…I hope you didn’t forget.” said Robin.
“I wont, master Robin.”
“Master Robin? Wait…so you’ve trained him?” asked Sir Loyd, surprised by this fact. As he did, he suddenly felt ot gaze of th Guild Leader eyeing him from the back as they made their way into the deep forest.
“Indeed I have.” said Robin proudly.
“Hmph! Don’t take all the credit boy.” said Boffy
“It wasn’t just Robin…all four us trained him in some ways or the other. He is a valuable kin in our eyes.” said Kingsley the leader of the guild.
“What? I didn’t know. Abel, why didn’t you told me about this?” asked Sir Loyd.
“I…I thought it didn’t matter. My connection with the four grand adventurers of the guild is something I keep secret even from the sisters.” said Abel.
“But why keep it a secret? How did you get to know these four?” asked Sir Loyd.
“It was more of my request really…I asked them to be taught on how to fight…how to survive.” said Abel.
“Let’s have this conversation on a different time, we’re approaching the enemies.” said Robin.
Knowing something about Able made Sir Loyd understand just why Kingsley invited the boy in the first place. It wasn’t just because of his abilities, but because of his connection with the four grand adventurers. The masters seems to test the boy’s limit in any way possible, Sir Loyd can see it in their eyes. And seeing the opportunity of the apearance of some demons, it was fair to say that this was another challenge for the boy.
“Remember Abel, keep your shoulders loose.” said Kingsley.
“I will Master Kingsley.”
And with that said, the moment they found the demons hanging by the trees, it didn’t take long for the Demons to attack them. And the first one to act was surprisingly Abel.
“!?” Sir Loyd was shocked to see the speed of the boy’s movements. Comparable to that of high-ranking adventurers, for he was as swift as any keen hunter.
And his ability with the axe made him somewhat more violent-looking. In just one full swing of his axe easily took care of the demon in front of him.
This present show of strength only confirmed Loyd’s presumption on Abel’s ability.
He was more than capable in this fight than Loyd had thought.
“Well then, lets join in as well. We can’t let him have all the fun.” said Evelyn as she smirked from ear to ear.
And with it, the hunt began.
