Volume 11 Chapter 20 Memories of regret
“Okay!”
Ruisha, who jumped from Cindy’s ship, the “GlowBlue,” safely landed on the “Black Elizabeth” ship’s hull.
Though the ship had seen its fair share of years, it seemed to be well maintained, effortlessly gliding through the seas despite it being a century since its last voyage.
“Welcome aboard the Black Elizabeth. First, to our proud grand dining hall… That’s where I’d like to go, but we’re pressed for time. Bear with it.”
“Yes, it’s disappointing, but I’ll give up.”
As Ruisha made a light comment, Bat chuckled merrily.
“In a little while, we’ll focus our firepower on its tentacles. If we do that, for a short while, the beast will be left with only eight legs.”
“During that opening, we’ll get closer and cut its legs. That’s the plan, right?”
“Yes, exactly. Rest at the bow until then.”
Saying so, Bat went to the crew. It seemed he was conveying the plan.
Ruisha leaned against the ship’s rail and took a moment to catch his breath. This would be his final rest; from here on, they would have to fight relentlessly until they emerged victorious.
During this brief respite, Ruisha noticed Iris, who had come with him, wearing a somber expression. It seemed she was lost in thought, giving off that kind of vibe.
“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
“Oh, um… yes. I’m sorry.”
Iris couldn’t shake off her gloomy expression. Ruisha approached her and gently held her hand.
Her hand was trembling delicately, showing that she was burdened more than Ruisha had imagined.
“Iris, if you’re okay with me, I’d like to hear what’s on your mind.”
Ruisha said, gripping her hand firmly. Iris slowly opened her tightly closed lips and began to confide her feelings.
“Viness has always been an unusual child. He would say things like he hears voices or someone is calling him, or that he’s chosen.”
Iris spoke as she reminisced about the past.
“Because of that, he kept some distance from our kin. I tried my best to interact with him as normally as possible. But… I didn’t take his words seriously.”
“Iris…”
“But he was truly struggling. He was tormented because of Ku Ruu, but I… I couldn’t notice it and help him! How terrible… I… I…!”
Iris covered her face with her hands, struggling in anguish. If only she had understood his pain, perhaps the current situation wouldn’t have escalated like this. Ruisha thought so.
Watching Iris in distress, sobbing softly, Ruisha gently hugged her and rubbed her back.
“It’s not Iris’s fault. It’s all Ku Ruu’s fault. Besides, Iris, you didn’t belittle what Viness was saying, did you? So I believe Viness is grateful to you too.”
It wasn’t just comforting words. If you observed how Viness treated Iris, you’d understand. He cherished Iris. Ruisha could see clearly that Viness relied on her and looked up to her.
“Even so, if your heart still aches, let’s apologize after we save him. It’s okay, I’m here with you.”
“Ruisha-sama.”
Iris buried her face in Ruisha’s chest, as if hiding her swollen eyes. After a while, the trembling seemed to disappear from her body. Iris, having put all her weakness there, returned to her usual calm expression and moved away from Ruisha.
“Thank you. I’m… alright now.”
“Yeah, I’m glad.”
Ruisha, looking satisfied, turned towards Ku Ruu. Previously, those eyes were full of resentment as it gazed at the ship. Thinking about going to that monster’s side made his body freeze.
“I won’t lose. Lend me your strength, Tes-nee… Rio.”
He conjured the Dragon King Sword and gripped it firmly with his right hand. The sword he received from his mentor had a strange effect, filling him with courage just by holding it.
“It’s time! We’ll start the bombardment soon! Hold on tight, all of you!”
“Understood!”
Ruisha and Iris held onto the ship’s railing tightly.
In the next moment, the cannons mounted on the port side of the ship roared to life, and a rain of cannonballs poured down on Ku Ruu.
At the same time, from Cindy’s ship, cannonballs were also fired. Under a barrage from two directions, Ku Ruu’s tentacles were decreasing.
“Steer now, full starboard! Get closer to it!”
The two ships were moving counterclockwise around Ku Ruu. Suddenly, they changed their direction and attempted to approach Ku Ruu, who was seated in the center.
In response to the abrupt change in direction, the hull of the Black Elizabeth let out a creaking scream. Despite being maintained, this ship was a hundred years old. The ship’s body, exposed to the sea breeze for many years, was nearing its limits.
“Sorry, old friend. It’s the final journey, so please hold on somehow.”
While stroking the ship that had been his companion for many years, Bat said.
In response to his words, the Black Elizabeth smoothly moved on the sea and rapidly approached Ku Ruu.
“It’s almost time, Ruisha! Are you ready?”
“Yes!”
Ruisha and Iris stood at the bow of the ship, readying their weapons.
The Dragon King Sword and the Crimson XII Twelve. Both were renowned swords capable of cutting through Ku Ruu’s body.
“Prepare the main cannon too! I’ll leave the firing timing to you all!”
Bat also drew his saber to cut the legs and headed towards the bow.
This was a one-time chance. Failure was not an option.
“Well then, shall we go monster hunting? My picture book is going to get thicker again.”
Bat stood at the bow, making light-hearted remarks.
The thick legs he was aiming for were right in front of him. Most of the thinner legs had been eliminated by the bombardment. It was an exceptional and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“Prepare yourself!”
Holding his saber, Bat roared.
At that moment, Ku Ruu twisted its mouth and smirked.
In that moment, Bat felt something cold on his back. It was an intuition that he was missing something. However, by the time he realized it, it was too late. They were already in Ku Ruu’s trap.
“Guh!”
With a cry, countless tentacles sprouted from Ku Ruu’s body.
There were easily over a hundred of them. It was a number that the two ships couldn’t handle.
“You… did you hide your strength!”
Bat clicked his tongue.
He had underestimated Ku Ruu’s intelligence. He had arrogantly thought that Ku Ruu could only rampage in anger.
In the past, it might have been true, but Ku Ruu had been learning while sealed.
Humans might be inferior creatures, but they should not be underestimated. Ku Ruu had learned that it needed not only strength but also wisdom.
Therefore, Ku Ruu pretended to be defeated and lured the enemy into its embrace. The opponent was already within its striking distance, in a state where it could be dealt with in any way.
“Is this… the end?”
Bat twisted his expression in frustration.
As if mocking him, a multitude of tentacles surged, engulfing the ship.
Ruisha and Iris tried to fend them off using magic, but it was like a drop in the ocean. It was impossible to deal with all of them as they attacked like clouds enveloping the sky.
It seemed hopeless.
At that moment, a sound of gunpowder explosion resonated in the sea.
“Could this be… cannon fire?”
As Bat muttered, the attacking tentacles suddenly exploded.
The explosions happened continuously without pause, finally pushing back the swarm of tentacles.
“What on earth just happened!?”
Bat was perplexed by the sudden turn of events.
As he looked around to ascertain the nature of the explosions, he witnessed a surprising sight.
“This… is incredible.”
At the rear of the Black Elizabeth, there were more than twenty ships in a fleet.
And these were no ordinary ships. They were famous ships that appeared in fairy tales, including ones Bat had fought against and those that had made a name before Bat took to the seas.
While Bat was observing them, ships emerged from the sea, creating waves of bubbles.
Indeed, these were ships that had sunk in the sea. Moss and barnacles adorned their hulls, their sails torn, and masts bent, but the presence of these ships was magnificent.
“The Golden Fish, the Royal Mermaid… Hey, isn’t that the Navy’s Sonic Scout over there? Man, did it also sink in these waters?”
Bat spoke nostalgically.
Not only pirate ships but also merchant ships and naval vessels emerged. Ships that had been adversaries were now side by side, aiming at the same target. Bat was moved by the sight.
“Bat-san, are those…?”
“Yeah, seems like they’re lending a hand.”
Bat answered Ruisha’s question.
“That’s reassuring. Could it be that they were defeated by Ku Ruu as well?”
“Could be. But I don’t think revenge is the only reason.”
“Huh?”
Ruisha tilted his head.
Bat went to the edge of the ship and whispered softly while looking at the fleet.
“We’re having such a fun brawl. We can’t just stay asleep and miss out, you know?”
His expression looked truly joyful.

Volume 11 Chapter 21 Resurrection of the legend
The sunken ships that appeared suddenly fired a massive barrage of cannonballs aimed at Ku Ruu.
“Ruru… Aah!”
Angered by the sudden reinforcement, Ku Ruu released a giant mass of water from its mouth located in its torso.
The power of the water cannon, which wasn’t used due to its intense energy consumption, was tremendous. The ships hit were instantly shattered and sunk to the depths of the sea.
“Ah ♪”
Ku Ruu laughed cheerfully upon seeing this.
However, the other ships continued their barrage without any signs of fear. They were already souls that had experienced death once, with no fear left within them.
“We don’t know how long their reinforcement will last! Let’s quickly cut off its legs!”
“Aye aye, Captain!”
Following the captain’s orders, the Black Elizabeth accelerated.
The waves swirled as the ship moved swiftly amidst the chaotic flight of cannonballs. Finally, Ruisha and the others reached Ku Ruu’s embrace.
“Are you ready?! Let’s go!!”
“Yes!”
In response to Bat’s words, Ruisha replied and prepared to leap towards Ku Ruu.
However, at that moment, a large number of octopus-like monsters emerged from the sea and climbed onto the deck.
“These…,”
Iris made a displeased expression.
These octopuses were the same as the ones Iris had encountered on the island before. In other words, these octopuses were Ku Ruu’s minions. Ku Ruu had created them to defeat anyone approaching.
“Don’t panic! The fact that its resorting to this even if it consumes its energy is a sign of its urgency!”
“But Bat-san, we need to defeat these octopuses…!”
“Don’t be stupid! Don’t underestimate my crew!”
The skeleton crew members all grabbed their weapons and engaged in combat with the octopus monsters.
Though they were pushed back a bit, they held their ground quite well.
“Captain, settle this quickly!”
“Of course! And don’t rush to your death!”
After shouting this, Bat leaped.
Ruisha and Iris followed suit, attempting to land on Ku Ruu’s body. However,
“Ruru…!”
Sensing this, Ku Ruu swung one of its thick legs, trying to shoot them down.
It missed Bat, who had jumped first, but Ruisha and Iris, jumping behind him, seemed to be in its line of fire.
Iris, realizing this, quickly considered the most rational choice.
“Ruisha-sama. Please… take care of Viness.”
“Huh?”
Iris sprouted vampire wings from her waist, then grabbed Ruisha and threw him forward with all her strength.
“Whoa!?”
Ruisha experienced a sudden acceleration, avoiding Ku Ruu’s attack and landing on its torso.
Iris was left suspended in the air, alone.
“I’m counting on you for the rest. Here… I will…”
Looking at the thick leg swinging towards her, Iris took out a metal water bottle, Skittel, with a magical preservation effect from her pocket and drank its contents.
Inside was the ‘blood’ of a loved one. After drinking it, Iris’s magical power surged explosively.
“I won’t lose…!”
She poured the increased magical power into the sword she held.
The sword Iris wielded, ‘Crimson XII Twelve,’ was a unique sword with her own blood as the blade. Iris, now filled with an abundance of both blood and magical power, was in a state where she could fully unleash the power of that sword.
“Eat this! Blood Moon, dyed in crimson!”
“With all her strength, Iris swung the sword horizontally as if exhausting every bit of power.“
A massive crimson crescent is released from the sword. The crescent-shaped blade, condensed with immense magical power, cleanly severs Ku Ruu’s thick leg.
“Lulu…!?”
Ku Ruu cries out in astonishment.
Seeing this, Iris smiles satisfactorily as she falls.
“Viness… please wait just a little longer…”
