Volume 11 Chapter 18 Sea Calamity Ku Ruu
“Roooooaaaaaar!!!”
A terrifying roar echoed in the tranquil sea.
The marine creatures trembled in fear and tried to escape, but the source of the voice did not allow for any escape.
“Iah!”
Dozens of tentacles captured one marine creature after another and stuffed them into the mouth in its torso. The teeth densely lining the oral cavity were as sharp as legendary swords, easily crushing even the toughest creatures into nutrients.
“Lul… Iah…!”
The name of the monster that feasted with satisfaction was Ku Ruu.
Once feared by all who lived in the sea, the calamity of the sea.
Thanks to its extraordinary vitality, Ku Ruu had survived for centuries without proper meals. Originally a glutton, Ku Ruu now devoured creatures as if trying to make up for the long years of starvation.
No matter how much it ate, the feeling of hunger didn’t fade.
It seems like Ku Ruu would devour all the marine life. At that moment, its movements suddenly stopped.
“……?”
The sea ripples, and there’s a sense that something enormous is moving.
Ku Ruu, whose entire skin is a sensitive sensory organ, realizes its true identity.
“Lulu……”
That was the accursed island that had imprisoned him.
That island had returned to the open sea.
Ku Ruu contorts its face in displeasure.
Originally, followers who believed in Ku Ruu lived on that island. They offered sacrifices to Ku Ruu, and Ku Ruu thought of the island as a good feeding ground.
However, one day, a certain group arrived there.
Led by the hero, Orger, it was the hero party.
After a fierce struggle, they weakened Ku Ruu and sealed it. The bitter memory was deeply etched in Ku Ruu’s mind.
And another accursed memory was the day Captain Bat, the Pirate King, arrived.
Though sealed, Ku Ruu, storing its strength, had almost come to the point where the seal would be broken. However, Bat’s resealing ended that plan in failure.
“Fugurumu……”
Within Ku Ruu, strong anger swirls.
Immediately after awakening, the joy of the seal being broken overwhelmed any thoughts of the past. However, now that it has calmed down a bit, that anger erupted strongly.
When you think calmly, there’s no merit in fighting on the island. It’s better to temporarily distance oneself and fight once one’s body has fully recovered.
However, Ku Ruu had the pride of being the ruler of the sea. Escaping from inferior creatures like humans was unforgivable.
“Buooooo!!”
Therefore, Ku Ruu roared.
To declare that it was here and to trample on them without hiding or running away.
That declaration of war reached the captain of the black ship sailing the seas for the first time in a hundred years.
“…Yeah, that’s right. I ain’t gonna run, of course.”
Captain Bat, the captain of the black pirate ship Black Elizabeth, laughed cheerfully.
He had been by Ku Ruu’s side for the past hundred years. He knew that if he went out to sea, Ku Ruu wouldn’t run, but would attack without hesitation.
“We’ve had a long-standing feud with you. Let’s end it here.”
Following closely behind the Black Elizabeth, cutting through the sea, was the GlowBlue, ridden by Cindy.
These two ships and the people on board were the entire force that could challenge Ku Ruu. If they were to lose, a time of fear would come back to the sea. That was something that absolutely had to be prevented.
“You all better work hard! Show them a fight worthy of the final brawl!”
Bat roughly ordered the skeletal crew members.
The crew members exchanged banter while working.
“Captain, you’re more enthusiastic than usual because the child is watching.”
“Well, it’s fine. I want to show off a bit.”
Bat, who overheard their conversation, glared at the two. The two sailors exclaimed, “Eek!” and ran away.
Seeing this, Bat felt as if he had returned to his days as a pirate and chuckled to himself, seemingly enjoying the sight.
“Captain! A massive monster ahead! It appears to be Ku Ruu!”
“Open all gunports! Make sure the gunpowder’s not damp!”
The doors on the Black Elizabeth’s hull opened, revealing numerous cannons. The main cannon, especially emerging from the bow, was immense. That cannon, which had turned several ships into ocean debris, aimed at Ku Ruu.
“Main cannon ready to fire!”
“This is the signal for battle! Give it a flashy show!”
Following the captain’s orders, the enormous barrel spewed fire.
The unleashed blast drew an arc on the sea and struck Ku Ruu.
The explosion resounded in the surroundings as the cannonballs detonated.
Ku Ruu, struck by the blow, staggered momentarily but quickly regained balance and glared at the approaching ship.
“Lulu… Ia!”
Eyes shining a bright red, revealing wicked fangs.
The battle, a struggle for survival, unfolded.
“Ruaaaaaaaa!!”
Ku Ruu raised its massive tentacles and swung them down toward the approaching black hull.
The pirate ship, Black Elizabeth, was made of wood. A direct hit from that strike would easily turn it into debris at sea.
“They’re coming, you bastards! Hard to starboard!”
“Aye aye, Captain!”
Following the captain’s command, the crew moved the ship skillfully, narrowly avoiding Ku Ruu’s tentacles. The sea splintered and whirlpools formed where the tentacles struck. If they had been hit, sinking would have been unavoidable.
“Haha! This feels nostalgic!”
Amidst the spray from the tentacles, Bat laughed joyfully.
Fighting monsters was not a once or twice occurrence for him. Each time, they had narrowly escaped the clutches of death.
“Prepare the starboard cannons! Attract its attention… Fire!”
The cannons on the starboard side of the ship belched fire, and a hail of cannonballs rained down on Ku Ruu’s body.
While each shot didn’t deal significant damage, if dozens or hundreds hit, it would be a different story. Ku Ruu defensively used its tentacles, looking annoyed.
Ruisha and the others watched this scene from Cindy’s ship, the GlowBlue.
“Incredible…”
Watching the Black Elizabeth racing across the sea like a living creature, Ruisha muttered.
Their seamanship, which showed no signs of a hundred-year hiatus, was the ultimate proof of their prowess as pirates who had conquered the sea.
Cindy and her crew, witnessing this, couldn’t stay silent either.
“Don’t you lose! Open the gunports and fire!”
Following Cindy’s command, numerous cannonballs were fired from the ship. Ku Ruu, distracted by the barrage from the Black Elizabeth, didn’t notice the attack and took a direct hit.
“Lulu…”
Glaring fiercely at Cindy.
Having found a new prey, Ku Ruu extended one of its tentacles toward the ship Cindy was on.
“Aaah! It’s coming this way!”
“Don’t panic!”
Reprimanding the shouting crew member, Cindy sprinted.
They had come this far at the end of a long voyage. There were so many things she wanted to talk to her grandfather about. Dying here was not an option.
“Don’t get in the way, you octopus!”
Drawing her saber with her right hand, Cindy leaped.
She swung her saber toward the approaching tentacle.
“Deadly move, Ocean Dragon Triple Slash!”
She sliced through the tentacle horizontally at the center and then vertically at the end.
The cleanly cut tentacle fell into the sea, creating splashes.
“There we go.”
Cindy skillfully landed back on the ship.
Wiping off the slime from her blade with her clothes, she looked at Ku Ruu.
“I thought cutting off a tentacle would have more of an impact, but it doesn’t seem so. How can we defeat that thing…?”
Previously, Ku Ruu had been rampaging.
Cutting off one of its numerous legs didn’t seem to do much damage.
Cindy, frustrated, asked Sharo, who was on the same ship.
“Sharo! You received the Hero’s Legacy, right? Can’t that be of any help?”
“I’ve been trying, but it doesn’t seem to have an effect. It appears Ku Ruu has developed resistance.”
The Hero’s Legacy, the ‘Slumbering Emeraldite-Dormitory Sapphire.’
It possessed a strong sealing power, but Ku Ruu, who had been under its effects for a long time, had developed a resistance to the seal.
Currently, no seal would work on Ku Ruu. There was no way other than to defeat it.
While contemplating what to do, the Black Elizabeth, Bat’s pirate ship, docked alongside Cindy’s ship.
Captain Bat, the owner of that ship, jumped onto Cindy’s ship with a lively demeanor.
“Hey, causing a ruckus!”
In a cheerful manner, Bat arrived where Cindy and the others were.
“Gramps, why are you here?”
“If you’re my grandchild, you’ve probably noticed, right? You can’t defeat that thing just by hitting it normally. That’s why I came for a strategy meeting.”
Once Bat took over, the Black Elizabeth moved away from Cindy’s ship and resumed the battle. While Bat was strategizing, it seemed the crew planned to hold off Ku Ruu on their own.
“But Gramps, even for a strategy, we have too little information about that thing. If it were an ordinary octopus, we could aim between its eyes, but it’s not the kind that would die from something like that.”
“Heh, no need to worry. It’s about time that person will come up with a good plan.”
Saying so, Bat moved his chin, indicating a certain person.
There stood Ruisha.
He activated his demon eye and dragon eye, observing Ku Ruu.
“There are few opportunities to shine in battle on the ship. If that’s the case, I’ll be of use in other ways.” Ruisha left dealing with Ku Ruu’s attacks to Cindy and the others and focused solely on analyzing the opponent.
Demon and dragon eyes. Ruisha, who laid bare his opponent with these two eyes, finally unveiled the weakness.
“Ku Ruu doesn’t have a magical core. Whether it was destroyed by the hero or sealed, I don’t know, but it’s certain that it’s not present in its body now.”
“No magical core? How can it survive without that?”
Cindy asked in wonder.
The magical core is an organ that produces magical energy. It’s present not only in humans and demi-humans but also in magical beasts and other creatures.
Most living beings require magical energy to survive. If magical energy is depleted, they suffer from magical deficiency and quickly weaken, leading to death. It’s an inevitable fate for all living beings.
“It’s unnatural for it to move around so much without a magical core. So, upon a thorough investigation, I discovered something.”
“Something? What’s that?” Bat inquired.
Ruisha answered Bat’s question.
“Ku Ruu uses the absorbed humans as substitutes for its magical core. Viness and one more person. If we can remove these two from its body, it won’t be able to survive.”

“Is Viness still alive…!?”
Iris was the one to react like that to Ruisha’s words.
Her cousin, Viness, was caught by Ku Ruu’s tentacles and sucked into a well, after which he hadn’t been seen.
The common assumption was that he had been eaten, and his survival seemed hopeless.
“Yeah. I can definitely sense Viness’s magical power within Ku Ruu. He’s an important presence to Ku Ruu. Kept safe deep inside its body.”
“I’m relieved…”
Iris placed a hand on her chest, feeling relieved.
She was determined to save him, no matter what.
“Captain, the magical power you sense inside the octopus is for two people, right? Who is the other one?”
“Marcus-san mentioned that there was a person on the island before we arrived. I’m sure it’s that person. Probably controlled by Ku Ruu just like Viness.”
“I see. However, to not only unseal the one it manipulated but also assimilate them, that’s a bold move.”
Wolf spoke, displaying frustration.
After hearing the whole story, Bat showed a thoughtful expression and then spoke.
“So, we just need to get the two people inside him out. But that’s not easy; the body of that thing is tough… Even if it’s bombarded by cannon shots, it doesn’t even scratch. It’s impossible to cut the body and take out the people inside when we get close.”
“I’ve thought about that too. Ku Ruu’s tentacles come in various sizes, right? Eight thick tentacles… I’ll call them ‘legs’ for now. Those legs seem to be vital organs, and a considerable amount of energy is allocated to each one.”
Ruisha’s dragon eyes could visualize ‘Qi,’ which is the energy living beings possess.
With this ability, Ruisha had been deciphering the structure of Ku Ruu’s body.
“Unlike the other tentacles, regenerating those eight legs consumes a significant amount of energy. In other words…”
“If you chop off all those legs, it will deplete the energy needed for regeneration, making its body softer. Is that what you’re saying?”
Ruisha nodded at Bat’s words.
It was a considerably challenging battle. The thick eight legs were very sturdy, and ordinary attacks wouldn’t even scratch them. Cutting off eight of such things simultaneously was not an easy task.
However, among the individuals gathered here, no one voiced their concerns about such difficulty.
“We just have to cut the legs, right? That’s straightforward and helpful.”
“Yes, I’ll cleanly chop them off.”
“To save Viness. I’ll do my best too.”
“I’ve slain many sea dragons until now. Cutting off a leg is a piece of cake.”
“Hahaha! It’s getting exciting, isn’t it?”
The six of them looked at each other and nodded.
Ruisha, Sharo, Iris, Wolf, Cindy, and Bat.
Only these six had the strength to individually sever Ku Ruu’s legs. If even one of them failed, this plan would likely fall apart.
“Ku Ruu has eight legs. I believe we can shoot one with the main cannon of the Black Elizabeth, but even then, we can’t bring them all down with just one person per leg. Someone has to cut down at least two legs per person.”
“Yes. I think it’s best for everyone to approach this with the mindset of cutting down two legs.”
Bat responded with a “Yeah” to Ruisha’s words.
Leaving that task to one person seemed dangerous. After all, there was a high possibility of someone failing.
“Then on my ship, Ruisha and… young vampire lady, you come too. I’ll leave that to you, Cindy.”
Upon Bat’s words, Cindy wore a surprised expression and then replied strongly, “Yes, Captain Bat, leave it to me.”
She was very pleased that he relied on her as an equal pirate, not just as a granddaughter.
Looking somewhat embarrassed, Bat stepped away from Cindy and pulled out a small gun, aiming it into the sky. It seemed to be a signal flare, bursting in the air and emitting a strong red light.
“My ship will come soon. Be prepared!”
“Yes! Understood!”
Ruisha responded and then went to Sharo. He knew he wouldn’t see her again until everything was over. He wanted to say parting words.
“Sharo, take care. Don’t do anything reckless, okay?”
“You’re saying that in such a chaotic situation. But… I understand. Let’s both stay alive and meet again.”
After saying that and gazing at each other for a moment, they exchanged a warm, tight hug. They imprinted the warmth firmly into their bodies, reluctantly letting go as if reluctant to part.
Then Ruisha looked towards Wolf.
“Wolf, I’m leaving this to you.”
“Yes, Captain. Let’s have something tasty after this is over.”
Ruisha nodded at those words and, along with Iris, rushed towards the starboard side.
Approaching from that direction was the Black Elizabeth, a black pirate ship.
“Let’s go, Iris. We’ll definitely save Viness!”
“Yes, absolutely…!”
With these brief words exchanged, the two of them jumped onto the ship of Captain Bat, the Pirate King.
