- Chapter 1 - 49 - The Last Day of Middle School
Several months had passed since I had revealed my future school plans, and still, without an answer, the time to decide where to go was fast approaching. As usual, upon returning home from school, Matsuri-nee-san and Ririka waited for me at the entrance, sitting in seiza. It happened just as I hesitantly tried to slip through the gap between them to head to my room.
“Hey, Ryu-kun.”
Instead of the usual warmth, a chilling voice that pierced my ears echoed in my brain. It was already too late when I sensed something was amiss.
Matsuri-nee-san had a blade pointed at my neck, and with a voice colder than before, she said,
“Ryu-kun, I love you.”
With just that one sentence, with just those five words, my brain understood. If I were to be any more selfish, death was the only outcome. My brain and body realized I couldn’t push my luck further.
“Nee-san, I understand. I’ll choose a school close to home.”
“Really?! I love you, Ryu-kun!!”
Matsuri-nee-san’s voice returned to its usual bright and energetic tone. She lowered the blade she held toward me and skipped to the couch to sit down.
As for Ririka, she just quietly smiled, holding onto the hem of my clothes.

The decision for my future school had been made, and around March, when the cold of winter still lingered, the graduation ceremony began. My name was called, I received my diploma and returned to my seat.
After the long, long speech by the principal was over, I exited the school building, diploma tube in hand, to find my mother, father, and siblings waiting for me with warm smiles.
“Congratulations on your graduation. You’ll be a high school student next month.”
Everyone kindly said that to me.
And at the same time, perhaps my dream was coming to an end.
