"Please support me on Ko-fi! Thank you!"
Chapter 76: Summer Festival Date Part 5
The two gangster-like men looked at me for a bit, who had just stepped forward to protect Kashiwagi-san, then burst out laughing.
“What are you gonna do!? Skinny!”
“Do you plan on fighting us with that fragile body of yours?”
Their arms and bodies were about two sizes bigger than mine.
This confirms, they most likely didn’t get hurt just by colliding with Kashiwagi-san.
“We’re gonna need some compensation for this!”
They cracked their knuckles and started to intimidate us.
IndeeD, it was Kashiwagi-san’s fault for running on such a narrow road.
However, these guys who resorted to intimidation without even giving us a chance to apologize were clearly in the wrong too.
Kashiwagi-san squeezed my shirt from behind me.
“Yamamoto, I’m sorry. This is all my fault… this was supposed to be a fun festival.”
“Don’t worry, Kashiwagi-san. Leave this to me!”
Kashiwagi-san looked at me with hopeful eyes. In order to meet her expectations, I took a step forward.
“Well, how about you leave that girl behind?”
“If you don’t want to get hurt, it’s better to obey quietly, you know?”
I steeled myself like a man.
I was planning on prostrating myself before them and begging for forgiveness.
But at that moment, I heard a familiar voice from somewhere.
“Looks like you’re having fun! Hey, let me join in too, guys!”
A bearded giant man appeared behind the men, and put his arms around their shoulders from behind.
Then he smiled at them.
The two gangly men’s faces turned blue at the sight of his log-like arms and stern leather jacket.
“Did you say you broke a bone? Would you like me to take you to the hospital? My bike is parked right here nearby. This is the suburbs, so it’s quite a distance to the hospital, but with my driving, we’ll be there in no time…”
“Ah… haha! No, thank you! It was just a misunderstanding!”
“Yes! My arm isn’t broken! Anyway, we’ll be going now!”
The two gangsters bowed their heads to the man and quickly fled.
“Geez…you guys should be more careful when walking around here…”
Surprised, I called out the name of the giant man who unexpectedly came and helped us.
“Johnny-san! Long time no see!”
Kashiwagi whispered to me.
“Yamamoto, do you know that big man?”
“Yes! Kashiwagi-san, you must have seen him before too!”
“Hmm, sorry but I don’t remember… “
That big guy— Johnny-san, too— tilted his head at my call.
“Hmm…? Have we met somewhere? Sorry, I have many friends, but I don’t have that many Japanese acquaintances…”
“It’s me! Yamamoto! I was studying English at South Baden Hospital and I was really fat back then!”
When I said that, Johnny-san’s expression changed.
“Hey, hey, my brother! Look at you…so does that mean the clinical trial went well!?”
“Yes! And you seem to be doing well too, Johnny-san!”
“Your English has improved a lot, and you’re even bringing a beautiful girlfriend with you. Quite impressive, huh!“
Johnny-san laughed heartily at my response.
Yes, he was the leader of the scary-looking guys who had helped me learn English at the hospital.
Just like before, I greeted him by bumping my fist against his.
“Come to think of it, isn’t that girl one of the higher-ups at the hospital?“
“Oh, yeah. He was there when I went to check on Yamamoto’s condition. Thanks for helping us out. Well, either way, Yamamoto would have punished them anyway, right?”
“…O-of course! Ahaha!”
I couldn’t say it out loud, but I was planning to apologize and beg for forgiveness.
Well, If it weren’t for Kashiwagi-san being behind me, I would have actually been too scared to move.
“It’s all good! Our team, the ‘Bravers,’ are the righteous street racers!”
Johnny-san flexed his muscular arms and laughed.
“Come to think of it, I didn’t know you all very well. What brings you to the festival today?”
“We’re patrolling the festival grounds as a team. If any problems arise, we’ll intervene and solve them. We’re just doing it on our own though.“
“Volunteering, huh? You guys are good people, despite your appearances.“
“We get that a lot! Hahaha! That’s why we don’t discriminate based on appearances either!”
Yeah, by the way, when I was in the hospital I was treated normally by everyone, despite being like that.
He was covered in tattoos, so I assumed he was scary and distanced myself for a bit back then, but…
I should have tried to get to know them a little better.
Kashiwagi-san looks aghast as if she has noticed something.
“You guys are always patrolling the festival… Does that mean the reason you were all hospitalized was because of the…“
Johnny-san looked a little proud as he crossed his arms.
“Yes, I had to be hospitalized with my friends because of the ‘shooting’ that took place six months ago at a festival here in Santaña. I was the one who took down the shooter, you know? Well, I took a few bullets and so did my friends.”
“There was a shooting incident like that!?”
I’m astonished at the shocking incident that only the U.S. could have.
Kashiwagi-san said with some familiarity.
“Ah, it’s been six months huh, this place is full of people as usual. However, they may still be on edge because of that incident.”
“The location where the incident occurred has increased security, so it’s actually safer than other festival areas right now. That’s probably why it’s crowded. I think it’ll be even more crowded for the New Year’s countdown.”
“Indeed, the New Year’s countdown is held at this clock tower every year. I hope that by then, Yamamoto will have become good enough friends with Lilia to come here together.”
“Yes, that would be great if Lilia-chan could come with us. Oh no, the fireworks are about to start! We have to hurry!”
I panicked, but Johnny-san laughed and said,
“If it’s fireworks you want to see, there’s a great spot where you can see them. I’ll show you!”
“Really? Thank you so much!”
“This is all thanks to Yamamoto’s charisma. Johnny, I appreciate it,”
After a ten-minute walk, Johnny-san led us to an empty hill where we could see the fireworks clearly.
“Well then, I have to go back to my patrol. Good luck to you two.”
Johnny-san said, giving us a thumbs up before leaving us alone.
After that, we watched the fireworks together.
“…It’s beautiful, isn’t it, Yamamoto?” Kashiwagi-san murmured as she looked at the blooming fireworks in the night sky.
“Yes, it’s beautiful. Kashiwagi-san,” I replied, stealing a glance at her profile illuminated by the fireworks.
