With great powers, comes a great harem! - Chapter 57- Discussion and rejection
Re-evaluation was a procedure that every student had to go through as their final examination at the end of each year. It decides whether a student is prepared to ascend or remain on the same floor and learn some more.
A person needs to ascend within three attempts of their assessments or they would get demoted and constant failures might lead to rustication.
However, re-evaluating a student in the middle of their year was something extremely unique, and exclusive to some extraordinary students, who have shown how special their talent and skill set were, that remaining on their current floor was nothing less than restricting their growth.
If counted on fingers then there were around ten students in the past who were able to jump a floor above after proving their worth above their peers.
And now…Yuki was going to be the eleventh.
“H-How…” Was the only thing he was able to mutter in response to her announcement regarding his re-assessment.
Yuki’s shocked reaction was justifiable, but still, Maki couldn’t help giggling a bit at that before she allowed him to know the reason,
“Is it safe to assume that you won’t be getting defeated by any of your classmates if it comes to pure combat?”
Hearing her casual question, which she already knew the answer to, Yuki couldn’t help grumbling.
He remained silent and that was enough for the lady to know his answer.
“When it comes to magic, then you have shown exceptional control over your barrier skill. Believe me, when I say it, I have never seen someone using barriers in such a peculiar and efficient manner….which makes me wonder when you get so proficient with your skills when you re-awakened recently?”
Even Yuki had the answer to that, he couldn’t just simply tell her. The fact that all his skills were instilled in his mind just the moment he received the blessings from the Goddess, was a secret no one but Yuki knows.
Shrugging his shoulder he answered vaguely, “Maybe I am just blessed with good learning traits?”
Maki knew her student was dodging the question and since she wasn’t tasked to reveal all Yuki’s secrets, she didn’t press on the matter and nodded in understanding.
“So yeah, back to the topic-”
“Ah, ma’am.” Yuki felt bad interrupting the teacher but before she could continue, he wanted to ask something that may end this discussion right away.
Being a young and open-minded teacher, Maki didn’t react negatively to his interruption and gestured for him to continue,
“Can I not participate in the re-evaluation?”
“Hmm?” The older one wasn’t able to believe her ears.
Despite how proficient one seems in their skills and how brilliant they academically perform, the chance of re-assessment during the academic period was not something everyone could get. And there was no way for a student to request a promotion from the teacher, which was why students like Anna Willson and Karuizawa Maya were still on the first floor.
And to think that someone, completely out of nowhere got selected by the chief administrator, Professor Kazuya for the ascension test…would decline the offer?
“Tell me one good reason.”
Maki’s tone might have been a little heavier than before since at the moment, her perception toward Yuki shifted slightly.
Whatever the reason, rejecting such a once-in-a-lifetime offer was foolishness in her eyes.
It wasn’t like Yuki didn’t understand her thoughts, however, his answer didn’t change,
“Maya.”
Maki narrowed her eyes before her response followed, “So for a girl…whom you have been hating most of your life, you would decline the route of your betterment? Have you forgotten how much this world has belittled you in the past? Isn’t this the perfect opportunity to get back at them?”
Yuki’s past was an open book for everyone, given his roots that connect him to one of the most ancient families in Japan. It was apparent that he hated Maya until a few days ago but after that incident in the infirmary, things changed.
However, from Maki’s perspective, Yuki should put his own self-respect and dignity first. Given how he was ridiculed by his own family and was thrown away, Maki believed this to be the biggest leap in Yuki’s journey to show them, what they lost.
Maybe because she knows the feeling of getting abandoned, that’s why she was getting emotional here.
However, despite her reasoning, which of course Yuki also considered, his answer remained the same,
“I am sorry, Ma’am, but I patched up with her just some days ago, and I don’t want us to separate again. Unlike what I used to believe, Maya also is a lonely girl with no one to depend on. I don’t want to snatch that sole support from her as well.”
Hearing his deep words spoken in such a light tone…Maki sighed.
Her complaints and deep frown disappeared within a moment. Not just because of that determination that Yuki carried toward his resolve, but also, because the reasoning he presented was something that made Maki quite impressed.
It seems, that not only Yuki was alone, but Maya as well. How could she separate the two?
“Well, I won’t force you to go through the re-evaluation…but I could request something from the head administrator that you may like.”
Yuki’s brows raised hearing that, before he asked in an uncertain tone, “You mean…Maya’s as well?”
Maki just smiled before replying with her hands raised in surrender, “No promises. I can just try.”
Yuki offered her a beaming smile as he spoke in a much lighter tone, “I appreciate that. I really do.”
Once done, Yuki was sent off by Maki since there was nothing more to talk about.
She envisioned this conversation to tread differently, but well. Nothing could win over young love.
‘Haah…I wonder what it takes to have such a dependable partner…’ Left in her office, the green-haired beauty couldn’t help but think when was the last time she had someone to rely on.
As far as she remembered, there was none.
Scratching away her lonely depressing thoughts, she turned on her terminal before moving the cursor toward the footage of yesterday’s spar.
Playing it once again, she froze it near the end of the second battle, before Maki’s eyes flashed with a peculiar radiance. Just the moment when Yuki was about to strike his elbow at Ryan, she paused the footage.
‘As I thought…he has elemental magic as well.’
Well, even though she found out about it, it wasn’t the correct time nor did she have enough evidence to have some interrogation session with Yuki.
“Well, I can do this much for my cute little student…” After deleting the footage, she closed the terminal and began preparing for her first lecture.

A/N:- I thought of adding another scene but it would have taken almost double the size of the chapter. Well, I would explain why Yuki is so reluctant to ascend and such.
