I don’t mind the changes the author has commented about but I do suggest that they go back to the earlier chapters and touch them up to make it consistent for any new readers who come along.
For this chapter it’s not easy for me to relate to why his rules are what he chose or why he’s committed to keeping the story from changing. He ends up miserable and dead in the original story, mainly because he stayed close to these two “friends”. Why wouldn’t he use this new resolve to draw a line? It would be more direct to just say that he wishes them both well together but it’s not healthy for him to have a front row seat to their relationship. I mean he should be working hard to change the story as much as possible to save himself right? These rules don’t work towards that goal at all.
He has other friends, and this separation would give him the chance to make connections with people who he could actually move forward with. These childhood friends are a complete dead end that will only make him miserable. He should know that even without knowing how they talk about him behind his back and actively make him miserable.
