Chapter 89: The Monster’s Name (2)
In the end, I’d been under surveillance from the three-day weekend until today, the day before Golden Week.
For three consecutive days, watchful eyes.
Even though I thought I’d grown used to the heated stares from my blind spots, the unknown intentions behind them still made me tense.
I was fed up and decided it was time to act.
(
Today, the day before Golden Week.
After school, I stepped onto the empty rooftop, phone in hand.
“Hello?”
“Mizuno, got a sec?”
Mizuno answered with a cautious tone, and I responded calmly to put her at ease.
“…Onodera—er, Yuu-san isn’t nearby, right?”
“Nope. You’re good.”
“Phew…! Uh, I mean, don’t tell her I said that…!”
“I got you. Must be tough for you too…”
“No, it’s fine…”
When we first met in the classroom after school, her tone was casual.
…But now, for some reason, she used polite language when speaking to me one-on-one.
…Wait, did I do something to her? …No, me? Nah, no way.
If anything, it was Yuu who traumatized her, not me. I don’t recall doing anything to scare her that badly…
Mizuno doesn’t act like this in front of others, but her fear when we’re alone feels so real.
…Maybe I should apologize? But the mood isn’t light enough for a playful “Did I mess up again?” I feel like she’s genuinely keeping her distance…
“Anyway, about what I asked you to look into?”
“…Oh, right. Did you figure it out?”
I thanked Mizuno for getting to the point and urged her to continue.
“So, about the current Student Council President, Takuya Yasuoka…”
*
The school’s Student Council, mockingly called the “Harem Student Council” by students.
Takuya Yasuoka, the president, reigns over it.
The sole male in an otherwise all-female group, he’s the boss, the embodiment of lust—a true monster.
It’s said he ruthlessly eliminates any male who opposes or defies him, using any means necessary, and always gets the girls he targets. A monster’s deeds.
That’s why, despite the whispers, no one dares speak out openly.
To me, he seemed like an enigmatic beast. But since he was in the soccer club as a first-year, I asked Mizuno, the soccer club manager, to dig into his background. With Yasuoka’s fame, gathering info wasn’t hard.
Luck helped, or rather, having a connection like Mizuno streamlined the process significantly.
Fewer tasks make things easier.
Especially when acting alone, the effort I’d have to put in is worlds apart.
I’m grateful for the people I’ve met.
“—So, he quit the soccer club to join the Student Council with the then-manager, the Vice President… Hanazawa-san.”
“…I see.”
It made sense.
And, as expected, there seemed to be something between him and the Vice President, who resembles Yuu in height and hairstyle.
“The Vice President?”
“Yes, about that—”
This info came not from the soccer club but from Yuu’s female network. Apparently, Yasuoka and Vice President Hanazawa have an on-again, off-again relationship.
His womanizing likely caused it, and I could sympathize with her frustration.
But their inability to cut ties completely gave off a messy, entangled vibe.
They’re probably bound by a toxic, love-hate relationship.
Yasuoka seems indifferent to the women drawn to him, unbothered by them leaving—or perhaps he orchestrates it. Yet, the women, like Hanazawa, who can’t let go likely have feelings for him, maybe even want to monopolize him. It’s almost tear-jerking.
From Yasuoka’s demeanor this morning, it’s plausible his ties with past women persist. It’s safer to assume those relationships are still active.
“Recently?”
“Yes! You won’t believe this—!”
Mizuno’s tone turned sharp with indignation. Apparently, Yasuoka’s still cheating, recently hooking up with the Library Committee President, often bringing her to his place on weekends.
“Seriously… unbelievable, right? He’s the worst… literally the enemy of women…”
“Yeah, he’s… something else. In every sense…”
“‘Something else’? Is that, like, okay with you, Ren-san? Someone like him?”
“N-No, no! I meant, like, he’s… really causing trouble for everyone around him…!”
“Phew. Good to know you’ve got normal sensibilities, Ren-san…”
Relieved like Mizuno, I sighed too. If Yuu misunderstood my words, it’d spark unnecessary drama.
As a guy—or as a male—I can’t deny envying his carefree, unrestrained lifestyle. I’ll admit that.
…But man, watching him is nerve-wracking.
Especially considering how others perceive him.
Why do I feel sympathy or pity for him?
He’s doing whatever he wants, probably thinking, “Who cares about my image!”
Or maybe, despite being driven by his desires, there’s a deeper reason for his behavior—
“…Is it okay with Yuu-san?”
“What?”
Mizuno showed concern for Yuu over the phone.
“This whole thing. You’re doing this for her, right, Ren-san—”
“It’s fine, you don’t need to say it.”
“…Why not?”
She probed, as if wondering if I’d be in trouble if this got out.
I haven’t known Mizuno long, so I can’t be sure, but her tone didn’t feel like mere curiosity.
Is she more on Yuu’s side than mine?
Even though she seems scared of me, she’s bold enough to challenge me.
That’s what makes her a good friend.
“It’s a guy thing, wanting to look cool.”
“…Even if she’s not watching?”
“Even if no one’s watching.”
“Is that how it works…?”
“That’s how it is.”
Chatting with Mizuno, I felt relieved.
I’d misunderstood her a bit.
She’s clearly wary of me now, but she and Yuu seem to have a genuine friendship, caring for each other.
Even when she was harassing Yakko-chan, she didn’t drag others into her misdeeds, likely because she doesn’t trust easily.
But looking at her now, she’s surprisingly earnest, valuing her close relationships.
…Well, maybe not surprisingly. She’s been devoted to Sorimachi since middle school.
Probably a similar type to Yuu.
When they go all out, they lose sight of their surroundings, but deep down, they’re passionate, their kindness shining through.
“Mizuno, don’t worry. No one’s getting hurt over this.”
“…? You mean nothing will change?”
“There’ll be a bit of a stir around the Student Council President, but no one, including him, will end up unhappy.”
“…???”
Mizuno didn’t fully get it, but I couldn’t spill the details of what I was about to do.
“For now, can you give me Hanazawa-san’s contact info?”
“—!? Ren-san, don’t tell me—”
“Don’t worry. I’d never betray Yuu.”
“…If you say so…”
Mizuno was skeptical but complied. She might start watching me, or even tell Yuu, prompting action—but that’s not an issue now.
It’d be better if that didn’t happen, but even if it does, it’s within my calculations.
I need to make contact with at least two women from here on.
Hanazawa, who’s often around Yasuoka, required a middleman for her contact info, but the other woman, with her status and predictable movements, I can approach directly.
If I take these steps—
Even now, from the slightly ajar rooftop door—
“…”
A heated gaze, intently observing me—
“…”
—Yuu.
“…”
She wouldn’t miss a change in my behavior.
I just need to tell her not to interfere.
If necessary, I’m even willing to share the full plan.
As I told Mizuno, aside from a small part, my daily life—the one I cherish—won’t change much.
No inconvenience will disrupt it.
“Well then, I’ve kept my beloved girlfriend waiting long enough. Time to head back to class.”
“—!!”
As I stretched dramatically, the heated gaze seemed to vanish.
I gave a moment’s pause before turning, moving slowly.
Looking toward where I’d felt the stare—
“…”
The rooftop door was now fully closed.
