Chapter 8: I Tried to Stop Vicious Rumors, but Somehow Ended Up Helping the Culprit Confess
After Mizuno stopped crying, Yuu, Nijouin, and I sat at nearby desks to talk things out.
“Mizuno-chan, you get who you picked a fight with now, right? If not, there’s no helping you.”
“Y-Yes… I understand… I was made to understand…”
Mizuno was so subdued she seemed almost docile, her spirit completely broken. I felt a bit sorry for her, but thanks to Yuu’s hardline approach, things were settling down.
It was like one predator’s madness was swallowed by an even greater one.
The bigger predator devouring the smaller one calmed the situation, at least for now.
By the way, after cleaning up Mizuno’s… accident, we thoroughly wiped down the area at her request. Not much time had passed since things calmed down, but it felt like we’d been at it forever, and I was mentally drained.
Mizuno’s own exhaustion and emotional damage must’ve been on another level, though.
Yuu, continuing the negotiation, stayed calm (though to me, she looked way too eager) and directed a sincere gaze and voice at Mizuno.
I could guess what Yuu was thinking or planning, but her fingers flying under the desk on her phone were intense. Like, shubababa-level intense.
“Mizuno-chan, you were planning to edit that audio to make it sound like Ren-chan was threatening you, right? But you get it now, don’t you? We’ve got that video, unedited, ready to share with anyone, anytime. If you’d kept being stubborn back there, you’d be done.”
Yuu’s relieved tone and expression suggested she was happy they’d reached an understanding.
“I’m so relieved. Honestly, I didn’t want to do that.”
At first, Yuu was ready to crush Mizuno without compromise, but she respected my “hold off” signal and followed through.
“I’m not some demon or monster. I totally get how it feels to love someone with all your heart. So, I’ve got a proposal.”
Yuu spoke with brimming confidence.
“I’ll help you get together with Sorimachi-kun.”
She glanced at me, as if checking if that was okay, and I nodded slowly.
*
Trying to stop vicious rumors somehow led to helping the culprit confess, thanks to my childhood friend’s suggestion.
—No, let’s not play dumb with “somehow.”
To resolve this mess in the best way possible, it was obvious this was the path to take. I was ready to brush off any “why go that far?” objections, but Yuu and Nijouin were surprisingly on board with my approach.
The fact that Yuu—of all people—gave up her precious after-school time to help so willingly probably had a lot to do with my “request.”
Yuu, Nijouin, and I worked with Mizuno, getting her to explain everything: the rumor-spreading tactics, her crimes, and the event that drove her actions.
It all started a week ago when Sorimachi, the first-year soccer club member she had a crush on, confessed to Usotsuki-chan.
Mizuno, unaware he’d been rejected, confessed to him the very next day—talk about bad timing.
Looking only at the events, Mizuno’s harassment of Usotsuki-chan seems like pure spite, but there was more to Sorimachi’s reaction when he rejected Mizuno.
“‘Tsukimi turned me down, but I’m not convinced yet. If she doesn’t have a boyfriend, I still have a chance,’” he’d said.
I can only imagine how Mizuno felt hearing that declaration of a confession retry.
Sorimachi hadn’t given up on Usotsuki-chan despite being rejected, and that attitude wounded Mizuno’s pride and heart.
“I wanted to accept that part of him too. But…”
Mizuno burst into tears, collapsing onto the desk.
“It’s just… too much… Why isn’t it me? Why her, someone he barely even talked to…?”
“““…”””
We didn’t know what to say.
Honestly, we didn’t know much about Mizuno and Sorimachi’s relationship. They’re in a different class, and we’re not directly involved, so it’s only natural.
Still, from what we heard, it didn’t seem like an unsolvable problem. While Mizuno bears the responsibility for this mess, she’s not the sole cause.
The fact that she acted alone actually works in her favor now.
There were people she used, but no accomplices.
Her lonely, jealous revenge (if you can call it that) kept things straightforward, with a limited cast of characters.
“Let’s head to the field now.”
““What?””
Mizuno and Nijouin were shocked by Yuu’s sudden suggestion.
“What’s that about… Like, right now?”
“W-Wait, that’s a bit… What’s the point…?”
Yuu’s abruptness, skipping any preamble, made it seem out of nowhere.
“Yuu’s trying to help you with your confession retry.”
“Uh…”
Mizuno still didn’t get it, so I clarified.
“You contacted Usotsuki-chan, right?”
“Of course.”
Yuu showed me her phone screen, which she’d been furiously tapping earlier.
“She was on her way home. I got her to turn back, so she’ll be here in about five minutes.”
“Nice work, Yuu.”
“Ehehe~♥”
I didn’t see the exact message, but she probably told Usotsuki-chan her problem was solved to lift her spirits and get her to come back.
“First, apologize properly to Usotsuki-chan. For everything.”
“Ugh… Y-Yes…”
My serious tone made Mizuno nod solemnly.
After being intimidated, exposed, and having her weakest moment witnessed, her mental state was in tatters.
Usotsuki-chan would probably forgive her.
*
From behind the clubroom building, we watched the soccer club members taking a break at the edge of the field.
Stumps from trees cleared for being in the way dotted the area. We could see players stretching or dramatically squirting water from squeeze bottles. Sorimachi wasn’t visible—probably in the bathroom or the clubroom—but asking a teammate or senior would confirm his whereabouts.
It seemed like a longer break between practice matches, but we couldn’t dawdle. This was the best time to act before practice ended late.
“Come on, go already.”
“B-But…!”
“Such a coward.”
“It’s just one rejection! Don’t be so timid!”
Urged on by Yuu and Nijouin, Mizuno looked troubled, unable to take the plunge.
Having been rejected once, it’s no surprise her trauma made her hesitate. Still, her expression showed a mix of distress and a faint glimmer of excitement, which I closely observed.
Then, to our group—
“—Found you!”
Usotsuki-chan arrived, slightly out of breath, sweat on her forehead.
She stopped in front of us, catching her breath.
“What’s this gathering…?”
Seeing the group, she widened her eyes for a moment before giving us a suspicious look.
Still unaware that Mizuno was the culprit, she scanned us with pure curiosity.
“Mizuno.”
“Y-Yes!”
“What?”
Called by me, Mizuno stepped forward stiffly, her upper body rigid as if frozen, moving only her legs. Usotsuki-chan tensed, wary of this awkward approach.
“I’m so sorry!!”
Mizuno bowed at a perfect right angle, her short brown bob falling forward, exposing her nape.
“Huh?”
Usotsuki-chan froze, shocked and confused.
“So, actually—”
Mizuno explained everything to the stunned Usotsuki-chan, sincerely apologizing with all her heart.
When pushed to the brink, people can act in unexpected ways.
The less room they have, the closer their actions come to pure instinct.
When Mizuno was cornered, she had no allies, no one to understand her.
And no one to stop her from heading down a path of self-destruction.
Her method—dragging others into her spiral of ruin—might have been her way of protecting herself… or rather, her way of “taking back” what she felt she’d lost.
“Don’t dawdle, or their break’ll be over.”
“Go on. We’ve got your back.”
“Fight on!”
“Everyone…”
Mizuno teared up, overwhelmed with emotion.
But then, a harsh scene unfolded before us.
“—Tsukimi!”
“Sorimachi-kun…”
Sorimachi, spotting us as we emerged from hiding, appeared out of nowhere.
It was my first time matching his name to his face. He was slightly taller than average, with short, light brown hair and a sporty, refreshing vibe—a classic handsome guy.
“Came to watch practice?”
“No, that’s not it…”
Usotsuki-chan, aware of the situation from our brief explanation earlier, glanced nervously at Mizuno behind her. Her usually bold eyes softened with uncertainty, and her lively blonde twin-tails seemed to droop, almost as if reflecting her mood.
“…Hm? Who’re they?”
Noticing Usotsuki-chan’s odd behavior, Sorimachi finally looked around and spotted us.
“Mizuno… and Onodera-san? And…?”
“Hoshimiya. Nice to meet you.”
“Oh, nice to meet you…”
I introduced myself briefly, and he returned the greeting, looking confused.
“Actually, Tsukimi-chan has something to say to you, Sorimachi-kun.”
“What…?”
Usotsuki-chan shot me a look, clearly thrown by my sudden move.
But come on, this is about cleaning up the mess you left half-finished.
“No way! Did you change your mind about my confession!?”
“No, that’s not it…”
Sorimachi tilted his head as Usotsuki-chan hesitated.
“I’m here to properly tell you… I can’t go out with you.”
“…!”
Sorimachi stiffened, as if suppressing pain, though his expression stayed normal.
“Can you… give up on me?”
I’d rarely seen Usotsuki-chan this meek—well, not never, but it was definitely rare.
“Why…?”
He could tell her attitude wasn’t a lie or a joke, and his trembling voice showed he’d stopped caring about our watching eyes.
“You said you didn’t have a boyfriend last time, Tsukimi…!”
“Yeah… that’s true, but listen.”
Usotsuki-chan glanced back at us.
Then, turning back to him, she continued slowly.
“…I actually have someone I like right now.”
“—!?”
Sorimachi’s refreshing face twisted in shock, unable to hide it.
“So, I can’t think about dating anyone else right now.”
“Oh… I see…”
“I’m sorry…”
“No, it’s…”
Sorimachi seemed to finally understand her feelings.
His gaze flickered between us and Usotsuki-chan a few times before he let out a small laugh and relaxed his shoulders.
“…I couldn’t let go for so long.”
“Yeah…”
He spoke with effort, as if it took everything to say it.
“Thanks for properly turning me down.”
“…Yeah.”
Usotsuki-chan looked away, nodding shyly, as Sorimachi met her with earnest eyes.
Man, Sorimachi’s a good guy.
And Usotsuki-chan did a great job properly rejecting him. Nice.
Now, aside from Nijouin tilting her head curiously, I was a bit worried about Yuu, who was radiating some serious hostility… Oh, right, we weren’t done yet.
“I-I…!”
One girl stepped forward from our group.
“I’m not giving up…!”
“Mizuno…”
Mizuno called out to Sorimachi, her voice strained as she tried to hold it together.
“Sorimachi-kun, I like you!! I’ve liked you since middle school!!”
“…Oh, really…?”
Sorimachi blinked, as if something clicked, and scratched his head with a wry smile.
Wait, these two went to the same middle school? No wonder Mizuno lost it when her crush got taken by some new girl like Usotsuki-chan. Though, Usotsuki-chan’s a beauty on the outside, but her quirky personality is kind of a wildcard…
“Sorry, but I can’t return your feelings right now, Mizuno.”
“…!”
Sorimachi opened his eyes fully, looking directly at Mizuno, who cared for him.
She flinched for a moment under his gaze but pressed her lips together and met his eyes.
“Why—?”
“I just can’t accept your feelings right now.”
“…!”
What did Mizuno take from his answer, and how did she interpret it?
With a trembling voice, she spoke.
“You still like Tsukimi-san? That’s fine, I—”
“No, that’s not it.”
“I don’t care if I’m second—!”
“—!?”
Tears streamed down both of Mizuno’s cheeks.
She didn’t even wipe them, just kept staring at Sorimachi.
“No! That’s not what I mean—!”
“Can I… keep liking you, Sorimachi-kun!?”
“…Huh?”
He seemed to doubt his ears for a moment.
“You don’t… hate me, right!?”
“No, that’s not it!”
“Then—!”
Their emotions overflowed, mingling and filling the air around us.
Mizuno’s words were almost too convenient for Sorimachi.
Even if they came from pure, desperate love.
Even if their gazes met, their feelings connecting.
Sorimachi wasn’t going to return Mizuno’s feelings right then and there.
That much was clear.
“E-Even so… I’ll keep trying to make you turn my way, Sorimachi-kun…!”
“Mizuno…”
Her desperation must have hit him hard.
“Ngh, uh, mm…”
Realizing his mouth was hanging open, Sorimachi quickly shut it, letting out a sound somewhere between a groan and a grumble.
“I want you, the Sorimachi-kun I love so much, to like me back.”
“—!”
What did Sorimachi take from Mizuno’s feelings?
What was he thinking?
“So, let me keep liking you. I’ll make you look at me.”
Mizuno smiled through her tears, confessing her affection.
Faced with that expression, Sorimachi had no defense.
“…If that’s okay with you…”
He swallowed hard, accepting her feelings.
On the way home, stopping by Usotsuki-chan’s place.
“Every now and then, a dramatic after-school moment like that’s kinda nice.”
“Yeah, but…”
“What’s up?”
Yuu, walking close to me, sighed as I spoke enthusiastically.
“Ren-chan, do you like that kind of confession?”
“Like? I was just kinda moved. It looked like Sorimachi was touched, too.”
“Hmm… it was romantic, I guess…”
“Something bothering you?”
“No, it’s just… it felt a bit weak.”
“…Really?”
Was it that lacking in assertiveness?
To me, Mizuno’s confession had this intense, all-in energy.
“I mean, it was a confession with no guarantee it’d work out, right? If you’re gonna do it, you’ve gotta go harder—”
“‘Harder’?”
“…Never mind. Forget it.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
To Yuu, who’s all about using every weapon in her arsenal, that confession must’ve seemed half-baked. She didn’t seem keen on sharing her own approach, and I was torn between wanting to know and being a little scared to ask…
“Well, that’s Yuu-chan for you~”
Usotsuki-chan, who’d been quietly trailing behind, suddenly spoke up, stepping up to my side opposite Yuu—her usual spot, sandwiching me between them.
“It’s probably some crazy confession style, for sure.”
“Huh?”
“Just kidding! ☆”
“Don’t make weird accusations in front of Ren-chan!”
Yuu sounded ready to snap, but I couldn’t tell if Usotsuki-chan hit the mark or not.
“Crazy confession style, huh…?”
“Now you’ve got Ren-chan curious!”
“Hahaha! ☆”
“—It’s probably…”
Another shadow joined Usotsuki-chan’s side, chuckling mischievously.
“…Something you’re better off not knowing.”
“What? Even you, Nijouin? Why’re you guys leaving me out?”
Nijouin Reiko, who’d probably be the first to break the finish line if we raced, given her athletic prowess.
Until recently, she was just Usotsuki-chan’s self-proclaimed friend, but somehow, through this ordeal, she’d leveled up to our friend—a formidable (and well-endowed) ally.
“It’s not about sidelining you, Hoshimiya-san. Some things in this world are best left unknown to gentlemen.”
“Ren-kun’s kinda dense in weird ways, so he probably benefits from that sometimes~”
“Indeed, that sounds plausible.”
“What’s with you two?”
Usotsuki-chan and Nijouin were having a surprisingly chill, in-sync conversation.
They do seem to mesh well personality-wise.
It’s actually the first time I’ve seen Nijouin walking side-by-side with Usotsuki-chan. Comparing them, Nijouin’s taller, and Usotsuki-chan’s dyed blonde hair contrasts with Nijouin’s natural blonde. The more I look, the more interesting it is.
Sisters? Nah, they don’t look alike. The hair color’s vaguely similar, but everything else—especially their combat power in certain areas—is on a whole different level. Seriously, what’s up with that…?
It’s like a chest-based class divide.
“Ren-chan.”
“What?”
“…Ugh!”
I turned to Yuu, and she was pouting, clearly upset.
I wasn’t staring, I swear! But she must’ve caught me glancing at Usotsuki-chan and Nijouin out of the corner of my eye. No way! I was so careful!
“What’s with those two?”
“Dunno~ Sometimes they have their own little conversations~”
“Impressive, aren’t they…?”
Nijouin looked stunned, staring at me and Yuu.
“Well, that’s just how it is with me and Ren-chan, right?”
Yuu was a bit embarrassed, but still.
It’s not fun having your thoughts read like an open book.
“Stop flirting in front of us, Yuu-chan~”
With that, the four of us walked noisily down the twilight path.
