Chapter 77: Just for Fun
The three of us—me, Yuu, and Yakko-chan—ended up at a family restaurant.
We sat at a partitioned table, naturally. Yuu and I were side by side, with Yakko-chan across from me. We browsed the menu and ordered: I got a chicken steak set, Yuu chose salmon meunière, and Yakko-chan went for a hamburger set.
This family restaurant’s set menus come with a hefty salad, tasty soup, and a choice of rice or bread for the main dish. Add a drink bar, and you’re guaranteed to leave stuffed to bursting. The prices are reasonable too, making it a great value. Sure, places like gyudon chains are fine for guys hanging out, but for a student’s lunch, a family restaurant’s affordable, hearty, and balanced menu is king… at least, that’s my take.
Not like you can come every day, though.
“Huh…?”
“What’s up, Yakko-chan?”
Even after ordering, Yakko-chan was scrutinizing the menu with a serious look, flipping it back and forth. She seemed to be searching for something she couldn’t find.
“No multigrain rice or anything?”
“Nope.”
Yuu answered sharply. “If it’s not on the menu, it’s not here,” she said, her voice flat and merciless.
“There’s garlic butter rice, though,” I added.
“Not greasy rice… I’m in the mood for multigrain,” Yakko-chan pouted, pulling her phone from the pocket of her white dress and staring at it.
“…If you’ve got complaints, eat at home,” Yuu muttered, her words cutting.
Fair point. At home, you can cook whatever rice you want, as much as you want.
“Coming from you, Yuu-chan, who’s like a walking ball of possessiveness, controlling even what Ren-kun eats. What’s your standard for letting a family restaurant slide?”
“Huh?”
Yuu, sitting beside me, shot a sharp glare at Yakko-chan across the table. Her long, straight black hair seemed to bristle with a momentary burst of murderous intent before she reined it in, grabbing her phone from her bag by the seat’s edge.
“We’re gonna be eating out together more often, so it’s obvious. What’s wrong with wanting to keep the person I love to myself?”
“Didn’t say it was wrong. But thinking that way means you know it’s kinda abnormal, huh?”
“So annoying. You always say things that get under my skin, Tsuki-chan. Can’t live without stirring people up?”
“You’re the one picking a fight. Who’s the one getting close just to be stirred up, huh?”
“…”
“…”
Ugh… why’s the vibe so bad?
All I wanted was to enjoy a tasty meal at a family restaurant…
These two are unbelievably bad at getting along.
It’s a mystery they’re still interacting at all.
“…Oh, my ice is gone…”
The tension I’d been feeling melted away, and I snapped back to reality.
I realized I’d been frozen, my lips on the glass of ice water.
At some point, I’d crunched through all the ice floating in it.
The cold numbed my mouth, dulling my senses.
Bzzzt bzzzt
“…Hm?”
My phone vibrated in my pocket.
Yuu, next to me, was fiddling with her phone, occasionally aiming the camera lens at me with a subtle pretense. Typical. So this probably wasn’t from her.
“…”
Without much thought, I guessed at the sender while pulling out my phone.
An unsolicited email newsletter, a random bill, some guy claiming to be a high school classmate (seriously, stop spamming current students, you scam idiots), a “you won a lottery” scam with a shady URL, a “dying and gifting my fortune” con, or a fake phone company claiming unauthorized account access.
Whatever it is, check the sender’s address, not just the name. If it’s gibberish, it’s a scam. Even if it’s not, if it’s not from a legit carrier, hit the “report spam” button silently. It’s a cat-and-mouse game, but better than doing nothing.
—I was thinking pointless stuff like that, but what I got wasn’t an email—it was a message.
≪How far’ve you gone with Yuu-chan?≫
“…”
I couldn’t help but want to call out Yakko-chan, sitting across from me.
Of course, she’s the one sending this nosy stuff.
I shot her a reproachful glance, and she smirked slightly before looking back at her phone.
How bold, doing this right in front of Yuu… I thought, but Yuu was grinning, engrossed in her phone with a smug look.
≪You’re getting snapped like crazy lol so funny lmao you’re used to it lmao daily life huh lmao too surreal lmao≫
≪Why’re we even doing this? If she finds out, we’re dead.≫
≪Oh, you’re keeping it a secret? ♡ Does that mean I’ve got a shot…?≫
≪No way.≫
≪Mean!≫
“…”
It was a short exchange, meaningless really, but typing in hiragana makes it feel like a long conversation.
I glanced at Yuu—
“—!”
She seemed to be organizing her photo folder or something, about to open it, but noticed my subtle glance and hurriedly closed the app.
“S-so, Ren-chan, what’re you looking at so intently?”
Not exactly retaliation, but probably to deflect, she spoke boldly, as if nothing was up.
“…Could it be, you’re messaging someone?”
“—!!”
Yuu’s sharp words made Yakko-chan tense up across the table.
Ugh… I get it, kinda.
Yakko-chan only pulled this risky move because Yuu was distracted.
Yuu’s sharp, but she’s not psychic. She can’t know everything happening out of her sight, and when she’s fixated on something, other things slip by.
“…Maybe, cheating with the female right in front of you?”
“…”
…Correction. Yuu might actually be psychic.
“The female in front? You mean you?”
“…Ughh!♥ It’s not cheating if it’s with me, right?♥”
“Right.”
“Calling me… the female in front!♥ Like no other female’s in your sight but me!♥ Ren-chan, you’re amazing!♥♥”
“…”
Her words suggest she’s thrilled with my loyalty as a boyfriend…
But, Yuu, you’re okay with being called a “female”? …Or is she actually happy about it…?
Ping
“““—!!”””
A sudden electronic sound startled all three of us, and we stared at the new arrival at the table.
『YOUR MEAL IS READY. PLEASE TAKE IT.』
“““…”””
A serving robot, trays of food peeking out from its upper, middle, and lower sections, instantly cooled the weird tension to room temperature.
“Whoa… so cool, first time seeing this…”
Yakko-chan’s eyes sparkled, clearly impressed by modern tech.

After leaving the family restaurant, we decided to wander the city.
“Phew… nnh… fwew.”
Yakko-chan stretched big. Her slight chest and lively movements gave off an energetic vibe. Her white dress should’ve screamed quiet elegance, but… nah, the chest thing’s irrelevant. I was rude in my head and apologized to myself.
She seemed to be wearing something under the dress, so no underwear was visible.
Her guarded style canceled out any allure, and her quick gestures betrayed the dress’s prim image. Analyzing it, her odd vibe made sense.
“—Ugh, Ren-chan!”
With a low, heavy breath, Yuu yanked my arm hard.
“Don’t stare so much!”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Guess my gaze just now was close to cheating in her book.
So she does have a line for what counts as cheating.
I’m still not clear on exactly where that line is.
“—Oh?♡”
But our little squabble let Yakko-chan get cocky.
“Did I seduce Ren-kun with my charm?♡ Should’ve said so sooner!♡”
““I wasn’t seduced.””
“Huh?”
Yuu and I said the same thing at the same time, our voices syncing.
“No way Ren-chan would fall for someone like you, Tsuki-chan. Dream on.”
“Huh? That’s too much!”
Poor Yakko-chan.
“Find yourself a good guy, Yakko-chan.”
“…I’ll think about it when I’m bored of Ren-kun~”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“If you touch Ren-chan, I won’t go easy, even on you, Tsuki-chan. Ren-chan’ll be a dad of one or two kids in no time.”
“That’d screw me over! I’m the one who wouldn’t be spared!”
Terrifying. Yuu’s dead-set on cheating equaling instant pregnancy.
And the number of kids…
Imagining twins feels weirdly vivid.
“You mean making Ren-kun attack Yuu-chan? Nah, he’s too nice for that, right? He wouldn’t be rough.”
“Normally, yeah. But that’s easy to get around. Just gotta tease Ren-chan’s male side—”
“—Alright, you two, look, there’s an arcade. Let’s stop by.”
I could somehow follow the conversation’s flow and where it was headed.
To dodge Yuu’s wild confession and whatever it might lead to, I steered them toward an arcade we happened to pass by.
