Chapter 60: The Calm Before the Storm?
It’s Friday after school, the eve of a three-day weekend.
No further contact from the Student Council since yesterday’s odd encounter. But with the weekend and Golden Week looming, I’ll keep it in mind.
On the last school day before a break, the atmosphere’s always a bit buoyant. Dodging the upbeat students, Yuu and I, both non-club members, headed straight home.
At my doorstep, we paused. Back when we were fake-dating, we’d part here, each to our own house. But now, Yuu’s been staying over at mine like it’s the most natural thing.
I assumed she’d pop home, grab her overnight bag, and return. But—
“Ren-chan.”
“Hm?”
Yuu called my name with a resolute, almost nervous tone.
I stopped unlocking the door and turned to her.
She said, dead serious:
“Wanna come to my place tonight?”
“…Huh?”
Something was different today.
*
That night, I visited her house and was ushered straight to the dining room.
Yuu naturally started cooking in the kitchen.
Startled, I offered to greet her parents first, confused by their absence.
As she cooked, she called out to me:
“Mom and Dad are staying at a hotel tonight and tomorrow. Since I told them I’d be at your place all week, they’re probably off having fun, carefree.”
Her response was so casual.
Right, it’s a three-day weekend. They can stay out tonight and tomorrow, return Monday, no issue. With Golden Week coming, they likely wanted couple time now.
“Dad came home earlier, but Mom dragged him out right away. At this rate, I might get a much younger sibling soon.”
“It’s all up to Mom,” she added flatly, uninterested.
To clarify, Yuu’s close with her parents, and they’re tight with each other—above average, even.
It’s great they’re so close, but hearing specifics left me unsure how to react.
I could feel a wry smile on my face.
Dinner was, as expected, Yuu’s home-cooked meal, eel-centric for my impotence treatment. A fantastic feast.
After eating and bathing, her flawless girlfriend act gave me a dreamlike, royal experience.
But it was getting late. I had to think about my shut-in sister’s dinner and her laundry—who’d handle it if I wasn’t home?
Yuu’s stayed at my place tons, but I felt hesitant about sleeping over at hers. Having her at mine is fine, but staying here felt like imposing.
“So, that’s that!”
“Hm?”
“Stay the night!♥”
“Nah, I really—”
“Stay!♥”
“Uh, okay…”
Her smile’s pressure got me. I gave in.
Thinking it over, her staying at mine kept chores on lock. A day or two of unwashed laundry won’t ruin anything. If my hesitation isn’t what she wants, I should just accept her hospitality. It’ll make us both happy.
The issue was Shiori’s dinner—
“Of course, I made some for Shiori-chan, too!♥ I’ll carry the food, so grab those containers, Ren-chan!♥”
“…Got it.”
She’s so thorough.
She even prepped for my sister. Almost brought tears to my eyes.
She’s so perfect, I’m falling for her all over again. Please, stop filling my moat and disarming me.
“Thanks, Yuu.”
“Hm?♥”
“For thinking of my sister… and everything.”
“Aw!♥ What’s with you all of a sudden?♥”
“Just… I’ve got a great girlfriend.”
“Geez, don’t get all formal now!♥ But… nfufu♥ I’m happy you think so.♥”
Neighbors, we walked the short distance between our houses together.
Her “nfufufu♥” giggles and goofy grin never stopped.
*
“Come on in!♥”
“Uh, thanks for having me…”
As expected, I was led to her bedroom—where we’d sleep.
A floral scent tickled my nose the moment I entered.
It should’ve been calming, but a girl’s room’s aroma alone made me tense. Why?
It’s not my first time here, but she’s my girlfriend now. Feeling nervous in the opposite sex’s room is natural, though.
“Nf!♥ Ren-chan’s nervous!♥”
“Well, yeah…”
From the entrance, a pale pink carpet with tiny flowers and matching cushions sat at the room’s center, with a cream-colored mini-table on it.
To the left, a closet, rack, and sideboard for storage. The rack and sideboard had cute dolls, trendy or famous character trinkets, and… an old, familiar stuffed animal. This setup’s barely changed since we were kids.
To the right, her bed, with a door to a balcony—not by the headboard but the foot. Always been there. A personal balcony’s kinda enviable, but Yuu only uses it to sneak to my room. What a waste.
Looking out, my room’s window seems close enough to jump to, which gives me weird confidence. Falling’s a risk, though, so I wouldn’t. Honestly, we should block it for her safety.
I saved the biggest change for last—the thing that stands out most, whose origin I don’t know.
At the back-left of the room: a desktop PC with three monitors (!).
Not crammed, but the monitors are snugly aligned, screaming “streamer vibes!” It’s jarring.
It’s not for hardcore gaming, though. The PC desk’s beside a study desk and bookshelf. The PC desk’s small, with the PC case tucked underneath, showing the space isn’t just for computing.
Next, the PC itself. Three monitors, one case—is it a high-end super-machine? I’m a guy; I dig tech. Could it be… self-built?
Yuu’s surprisingly (very) tech-savvy. Her smarts give her deep understanding, no resistance to tech, and with her efficiency, she masters it fast.
Still, the setup could be kinder to the PC. Heat could build up—wait, is it water-cooled? That’d outclass my air-cooled rig by miles.
I’d love to peek inside the case, but fiddling with her PC right after arriving feels off.
For some reason, Yuu hides her techy side from me.
She’d probably show me great apps or PC parts if I asked, but I don’t want to push if she’s reluctant.
Ugh, guy dilemmas.
“Don’t stare too much… it’s embarrassing…♥”
“Sorry.”
I only glanced around briefly but figured standing there was weird, so I stepped in.
Looking away, my eyes caught something on her study desk.
“…That music player.”
A small device, about three fingers wide, wrapped in earphone cords. On her tidy desk, it stood out.
“Nostalgic… you kept that?”
“Nfufu!♥ You remembered!♥”
“Course I did. You still use it?”
“Sometimes, yeah!♥”
Yuu walked over, her long hair swaying as she tilted her head, peering at my face.
She always beams when we talk memories.
“The songs from back then are still on it!♥”
“Really? Those songs… four, five years old now?”
“Remember the hits from back then?”
“Yeah. Feel like ancient history now.”
Just songs that blew up on TV or online when we were in elementary school.
As you age, you wonder, “Why was that so fun?” or “Why was it such a hit?” But still.
No matter how silly, things you enjoyed wholeheartedly, laughing together, linger as warm memories.
“We… listened to a lot together, huh?♥”
“Splitting the earphones, one in each ear.”
Talking with Yuu makes those days vivid.
Back when her room wasn’t so tech-heavy, just a typical girl’s space. We’d chat about nothing, share school stories, play games.
She once said she wanted to listen to music together and share thoughts. I agreed lightly, taking one of her earphones in my opposite ear, listening to all sorts of songs.
“…Nfufu♥”
Chatting calmly by her desk, she let out a delighted giggle, unable to hold it in.
She covered her mouth, looking thrilled. I felt my face soften into a smile.
“…Nostalgic.”
“Yup!♥”
Yuu blinked rapidly, her long lashes fluttering, shooting me a mischievous grin. Embarrassed, I looked away as she leaned into me, shoulder to shoulder.
I like these moments but can’t react smoothly. I just gave a wry smile, put my arm around her, and pulled her close.
“Nostalgic… old songs… huh.”
Hugging her shoulder, I mumbled words that popped into my head.
Feels strange.
“Thinking it’s already ‘old memories’ is kinda shocking. We’re high schoolers now.”
“Yeah…”
Her warmth, through my right arm, stirred something in my brain, my heart.
“…You kept that old music player, didn’t toss it.”
“No way I’d toss it…”
She looked up, eyes glistening.
“It’s packed with our memories. Like I can’t forget them, it’s too precious to throw away…”
“…Memories, huh.”
I met her gaze, repeating “memories.”
Those long lashes framed her deep, dark eyes, gleaming with intense light.
“Yup, memories. Ours, Ren-chan.”
“…”
Memories.
Time passes.
It’s gone.
And now, it’s slipping away, moment by moment.
But memories keep time from just vanishing.
The past doesn’t just fade—it lingers.
Like now—will we laugh about today as a past moment someday?
Memories, recollection, have a strange power to inspire forward-thinking.
They’re not just records.
They tie to the present.
And point to future possibilities.
“…Wanna listen to songs again? Like back then, together?”
“…Yeah!♥ It’s charged, so we can listen now!♥”
Chuckling at her preparedness, we sat on her bed like old times, each with one earphone, listening to the same songs.
“Now I really can’t toss it!♥”
“Haha!”
Midway, Yuu said something funny, glancing at me with a grin, and I couldn’t help but laugh.
*
“Okay, to bed!♥”
“Uh, right…”
After a warm, nostalgic time with Yuu, bedtime arrived.
She urged me to her bed.
The sheets were white, with a pale pink comforter. The more I looked, the more I realized—this is a girl’s room.
“Go ahead and sleep!♥”
“…Yeah.”
Hesitantly, I slipped under the covers.
Then—
“Nf, here!♥”
Without hesitation, she slid in beside me.
Once again, I’m sharing a bed with her.
She says it’s to heal my mind and body, but…
“Hey, don’t hog the edge!♥”
“You’ll fall off.”
“I’ll cling to you, so I’m fine!♥”
“That’ll just tire you out. Come closer.”
“Nfufufufu~♥”
For now, I’ll soak in her kindness and aim for a good night’s sleep.
