Chapter 39: Daily Life: Lunch with Everyone
Lunch break rolls around. As usual, I’m counting on Yuu’s bento and wait for her in the hallway outside her classroom.
If I waited inside, Yuu would probably make a loud, lovey-dovey scene, drawing everyone’s disapproval, so this is my way of avoiding that.
Class A’s Japanese lesson ran a bit late, and I hear the teacher’s closing remarks just now. As the teacher leaves, it doesn’t take long for Yuu to appear, waving to her classmates as she steps into the hallway.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Ren-chan! ♥”
“Our class just finished too.”
“Liar! ♥ You were waiting for me! ♥”
I take my bento box from Yuu, and we flirt lightly while walking down the hall. Feeling like the rooftop today, we head there together.
“Um… Ren-chan,” Yuu says, her voice cautious, glancing at me.
“What’s up?”
“Sorry… it might not be just us for lunch today…”
“That’s fine. Who’d you invite?”
“Nijouin-san and… two others.”
“Two others…?”
It’s rare for Yuu to agree to eat with a group.
One’s Nijouin, but who are the other two? Their faces pop into my mind instantly. At this point, it’s obvious who Yuu would give special treatment to.
We’re walking alone now, and you’d think Nijouin from Class A would catch up quickly, but maybe she’s got her own friend stuff going on. Whether it’s her consideration or Yuu’s, it doesn’t matter—they’ll join us later, so no need to overthink it. Obsessing over Class A’s girl hierarchy or cliques would be endless.
“The rooftop’s cool for eating, but did you tell the others—”
“Just messaged them. They’ll come soon.”
“Thanks for the heads-up. Guess we’ll wait a bit.”
“Yup! ♥”
Yuu quickly taps her phone, sending messages to everyone.
We climb the stairs to the rooftop and lay out my waterproof sheet (a camping tarp that doubles as a leisure mat, imported, ¥980 with tax, cheap but sturdy, folds up compact). We sit down together.
The schoolyard’s cherry blossoms have already fallen, and the rooftop’s anti-fall netting, stretched a few meters high, doesn’t exactly offer a stunning view, but it’s open and perfect for lunch.
“Cherry blossoms are gone, huh.”
“Yeah. Soon it’ll be rainy season, then hot again.”
“You’re getting ahead of yourself.”
“Time flies when I’m with you, Ren-chan! ♥”
“That’s… flattering.”
“Hehe! ♥ You’re blushing, Ren-chan! ♥”
…But seriously, when are the others showing up?
I’m itching to dig into the bento when—
“Ah! ♥ You look like you can’t wait to eat! ♥”
“…”
She’s sharp. Is my face that obvious?
“Well, yeah. I always look forward to your cooking.”
“~~~♥♥ Ohh! ♥ You’re making me blush! ♥”
“Payback for earlier.”
Yuu, unable to hold back, flashes a mischievous grin and snuggles closer. I give a wry smile, saying, “Alright, alright,” and put an arm around her shoulder.
Since we can’t be alone, she’s making the most of this moment to flirt. Other couples from different grades are scattered around the rooftop, so we don’t stand out too much.
As we cling to each other, ignoring the bento, the three we’re waiting for finally show up.
“Sorry for the wait!~☆”
“Quite the lively lunch, isn’t it?”
“Is it… really okay for me to be here?”
As expected: Yakko, Nijouin, and Mizuno.
I let go of Yuu’s shoulder, and she reluctantly straightens up, glancing at me.
“Kinda rare, huh~ The great Yuu-chan letting so many girls get close to her Ren-chan.”
“…What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Who knows?~♪”
Tension crackles between Yuu and Yakko.
“Yakko-chan, that’s rude to Nijouin and Mizuno. Sorry, you two.”
“No need to apologize.”
“I’m all about Sorimachi-kun, so…”
I’ve got Yuu, so I’m not worried, but it’s reassuring that neither takes Yakko’s comment seriously.
Nijouin, the steel-hearted ojou-sama (blonde half-Japanese, jaw-dropping figure), and Mizuno, the short-bobbed brunette who’s head-over-heels for Class C’s soccer club guy Sorimachi, a bit chaotic but earnest. Then there’s Yakko, whose lying habit may or may not be cured, still oil to Yuu’s water, a walking bundle of awkward vibes.
What a powerhouse lineup…
“—Alright, everyone!” Nijouin claps her hands as we all sit on the sheet, taking charge.
“Something’s starting,” I think, noticing her eyes practically sparkling.
“Thanks to Onodera-san’s permission, we’ve gathered today! Let’s keep connecting as a group, invite more friends, and make our school life vibrant—truly vibrant!”
“Nice!”
“Me and Ren-chan are just helping out, okay?”
“Nijouin-san’s really fired up, huh…?”
“Yeah. More friends never hurt. Let’s support her.”
“Right.”
“Ren-chan, just support, got it?”
“I know.”
“…Don’t get too involved, okay?”
“I know, don’t worry.”
“Really…?”
Seems like Nijouin’s “make a hundred friends” plan is kicking off. Yakko and Yuu seem in the know, but Mizuno and I weren’t clued in. Yuu’s clearly not thrilled about me getting too close to Nijouin.
I see Nijouin as a friend-of-a-friend—maybe Friend D? Or G? I’ll keep my distance, but I hope she and Yakko build a solid friendship. Or at least get along.
“I don’t need Hoshimiya-san’s help. If I ever do, I’ll make some guy friends first!”
“…Cool.”
Calling guys “guy friends” like they’re the same as girl friends makes me uneasy. Is she okay? Wait, thinking like this is probably overstepping. If it comes to it, her friends will handle it. I just hope Yakko and Nijouin find those kinds of friends.
“For now, though—”
“Hm?”
Nijouin, fidgeting a bit, proposes something simple: creating a group chat on SNS for everyone here, calling it the “Otomo-dachi Alliance.”
“Sounds good to me,” I say.
“Ren-chan…?” Yuu immediately objects, her voice sharp.
“Oh? Yuu-chan, you’re leaving Ren-kun out?” Yakko teases.
“N-No! I’m not trying to exclude Ren-chan!” Yuu stammers, denying it frantically.
I get what Yuu’s worried about, but I brush it off.
“There’s no ulterior motive,” Nijouin says. “I just thought, for the inaugural gathering of our ‘Otomo-dachi Alliance,’ it’d be nice to have a place to share info as a group.”
“That’s it…?” Yuu sounds skeptical.
Nijouin’s given this group an eccentric name (Yuu seems to consider a snarky comment but lets it slide), but I’m all for joining the chat. Not out of some ulterior motive—pure curiosity wins out.
I’m in a group chat with Machida and Masunaga, but it’s just us guys, and we’re not exactly chatty. We share school-related stuff or random memes, maybe a funny photo, and sometimes days pass without a message. But a girls’ group chat—especially with this many people? That’s different.
Sure, Yakko’s not sending me those relentless personal messages—the crazy ones—here, right? I’m curious to see her “normal” side outside her antics with me and Yuu. Plus, honestly, I’m kind of excited about a lively group chat.
There’s something about Nijouin’s enthusiasm I relate to.
“Ren-chan, I sent the invite!” Yuu says.
“Nice.”
My phone lights up with the SNS app, showing the group chat list. There’s the new “Otomo-dachi Alliance,” with my name added to the members. I’m quietly thrilled—a weird sense of excitement I didn’t feel joining the class or guys’ chats. It’s not some obligatory thing; it’s… genuinely exciting, for reasons I can’t quite pin down.
“…Ren-chan, are you that happy to be friends with other girls?” Yuu asks, her tone suspicious.
“Wait, Yuu, you’re misunderstanding.”
“Am I?”
I start explaining to a clearly miffed Yuu.
“Here they go again,” Nijouin says. “They say even dogs won’t touch a married couple’s fight, but shall we dig in anyway?”
“Well, Ren-kun and Yuu-chan aren’t exactly married,” Yakko chimes in. “Come on, you two, let’s say ‘itadakimasu’!”
“Yuu, let’s eat! Lunch break’s gonna end!” I urge.
“Ren-chan, that’s not fair. Ugh…” Yuu pouts.
“To our friendship from here on out!” Nijouin declares.
““““Cheers!””””
It’s like a toast, but we all say “itadakimasu” in unison and dig into our lunches.
