Chapter 26
A week had passed since I woke up. I was still confined to this room, unable to go outside.
Whenever I tried to leave, Aria and Lilia-oneechan would always come to stop me, tears welling up in their eyes. They’d plead with heartfelt concern, “You mustn’t go outside, Roa-kun. I can’t bear it if you get hurt again.” With them crying like that, I just couldn’t bring myself to take that step outside.
Yet, I’ve missed too much school, and although my body still feels weak, it’s not immobile. I really want to go to school.
But when I mentioned this to Lilia-oneechan, she simply said, “No.”
The thought that I might have to stay here forever starts to weigh on me.
There’s nothing in this room. The only thing I have are books given by Lilia-oneechan or Mia. Once I’ve read them all, there’s nothing left to do. Some might reread the same books, but that’s not for me.
Today, like every other day, in an effort to alleviate their worries, I took the opportunity when they weren’t around to get my body used to moving again.
If I tried to exercise when they were here, they would cry just the same and beg me to stop. Sure, my injuries are serious, but I don’t think they warrant this much concern. I can move around this much already. With that thought, I jumped, lost my balance, and fell over.
Of course, I know I’m the one causing them to worry.
“Roa, are you awake?”
Ellie entered the room after knocking.
“Roa, what are you doing? Didn’t I tell you not to move?”
“Ah, well, about that…”
Her eyes darkened with concern as she noticed my state.
At that moment, I was sitting on the floor, having fallen over at the worst possible time. I managed to sit up, but there wasn’t enough time to get back to the bed.
“You shouldn’t leave the bed.”
Saying so, she approached me, sitting on the floor, and helped me back to the bed.
“Hey, Ellie. Is it okay for you to miss school?”
“It’s fine. Roa is more important to me than school. Besides, there’s nothing new for me to learn at school. Even if I go, I’d just be cooped up in the lab.”
Her eyes remained clouded, as if she had shut out everything from her vision except for me.
That day, Ellie stayed in the room, watching over me until Aria and the others returned.
