Chapter 23
I had been dreaming for a long time, though the details eluded me. I had the feeling it hadn’t been a good dream. It was a dream filled with pain, sadness, and suffering. Trying to remember it made me nauseous.
When I opened my eyes, I found myself in an unfamiliar place.
“…Ah, Roa-sama, you’re awake.”
“Ah, Aria. Good morning.”
“Ah, I’m so sorry. Please forgive me for letting you end up like this. I couldn’t protect you.”
I tried to sit up, but my body didn’t seem to cooperate. Then I realized that I couldn’t see anything with one of my eyes. What had happened to me?
“Roa-sama, do you remember? You were attacked by a magical beast in the forest and ended up in this condition.”
“…What?”
I tried to remember, but my mind was foggy, and I couldn’t recall anything. I had no memory of going to the forest, and my recent memories seemed to be missing entirely. Aria was called the Saintess, and I trusted her, so it must be true. But for some reason, today I couldn’t fully believe her.
Moreover, why did I feel like putting a little distance between her and me? What was going on with me? Aria had tears in her eyes, clearly worried for me.
“Perhaps, Roa-sama, your body unconsciously erased the memory of the painful experience.”
“I see, that might be true. I’m sorry, Aria, for making you worry.”
“No, I’m the one who should apologize. Even though I was with you, this still happened.”
“No, it’s probably my fault. Don’t apologize, Aria.”
I reached out with one hand, intending to pat Aria’s head, but stopped just before making contact. My heart wouldn’t allow it. Normally, I would have patted her head without a second thought, but for some reason, I felt a sense of aversion towards her.
Why?
Suppressing that feeling, I went ahead and patted her head. My chest felt heavy, but perhaps this was just my own shame for losing to the magical beast. Maybe I felt this way because I was somehow placing the blame on her, who had been with me.
What a terrible person I must be.
“Roa-sama, it’s okay. I am here with you. This time, I will definitely protect you.”
“Thank you. Aria, you’re so kind.”
“No, not at all. You, Roa-sama, are far kinder and wiser.”
“That’s not true. Aria, you’re always working hard, making everyone smile. You share food with the poor, and you even donate to orphanages. I’ve always thought you’re really amazing.”
“!! Thank you, Roa-sama. I will continue to do my best.”
“Don’t push yourself too hard, okay?”
“It’s alright. Just receiving praise from you, Roa-sama, is enough for me to keep going.”
I felt a chill run down my spine. Though she should have been smiling warmly, there was something terrifying about her. Why was that? What could it be?
My mind filled with questions, but no answers were forthcoming.
