Chapter 05: The Girl Named Lieselotte
She had always wanted to join the Knights.
She wanted to protect others and wield a sword for someone else, just like her brothers did.
But she was a noble lady—one day, she’d have to marry into another family and contribute to her own.
That’s why she planned to attend the academy, to build connections with other noble sons and daughters, and hopefully find someone who could benefit her family’s future.
Today, on this very day,
Her father, understanding her desire to join the Knights, gave her what would be her first and last mission.
It wasn’t supposed to be too difficult.
She, along with some knights as her escorts, was tasked with hunting down monsters in the forest that had been appearing more frequently.
At first, everything went smoothly—but then, a bear-like monster of a clearly different level showed up.
The knights sacrificed themselves to protect her, becoming shields to ensure her escape.
Yet, even with their sacrifice, the monster refused to let her go.
Desperately, she ran… only to find herself in front of the villain (Yulis).
(Why is that worthless guy here…!?)
Among the nobles who had attended social gatherings, there wasn’t a single one who didn’t know Yulis.
He was a troublemaker, known for causing countless problems and behaving in ways that brought shame to his noble family, often creating headaches for those around him.
Of course, Lieselotte had seen Yulis before, and he had made rude comments to her at parties on more than one occasion.
He hadn’t shown up in the social scene lately, but Lieselotte, with her strong sense of justice, had always disliked him.
However, it was a different story if he got hurt because of being dragged into danger because of her.
She didn’t know why he was here, but even if she ended up dying, she felt she had to protect Yulis—
“…Eh?”
That’s what she thought, but—
“…Clearly, this is a mistake in my order, but it’s still a punching bag, I guess.”
For some reason, the air around them suddenly grew colder.
Especially behind her—so cold that if she forgot to breathe for even a moment, it felt like she’d freeze to her core.
Instinctively, she turned to look behind her.
There, Yulis stood, his breath visible in the cold air, gripping his sword tightly as he glared at the monster.
She was supposed to be the one fighting.
So why was he preparing to fight, sword in hand—
“Y-Yulis… Blanche?”
“I’m taking over the punching bag.”
Ignoring Lieselotte’s confusion, Yulis charged forward.
The monster let out a roar that echoed through the forest, and Yulis raised his sword, now glowing with a faint, pale light.
(Why is he swinging now!?)
The reach of the sword clearly didn’t match the distance to the target.
That big, exaggerated motion would just leave him open. As proof, the monster lunged straight at Yulis, seizing the opportunity.
“Don’t mess with me, you dumb beast! Of course, you’d take it if I leave myself open!”
And Yulis swung his sword without a care.
A swing that shouldn’t have reached, a strike that wouldn’t have landed—unless the blade extended.
[Gya!?]
Suddenly, the blade stretched out.
The monster tried to block with its arm, but the blow, powered by momentum, sent its entire body flying.
And that wasn’t all.
The arm that should have blocked the strike was now covered in a thick layer of ice.
Whether it was the strange sensation or the inability to move, the monster glanced at its frozen arm in confusion.
But in that moment of hesitation, Yulis closed the distance, leaping forward and slamming his clenched fist into the frozen arm.
“Worried about your fancy decorations, are you!?”
A dull crack echoed through the air as the ice shattered, breaking the arm along with it.
[Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!???]
“Haha! I’ll be taking this arm of yours!”
The monster let out a deafening roar of pain. Lieselotte instinctively covered her ears, while Yulis grinned fiercely… and drove his sword straight into the monster’s eye.
“I wonder what the average body temperature of a monster like you is.”
The monster, enraged by the series of injuries, swung its massive arm toward Yulis.
But Yulis didn’t seem bothered at all—
“Well, even if I knew the answer, it wouldn’t matter much!”
He pushed forward, and the entire monster became encased in ice.
It stopped moving entirely.
There was no need to say who had won. Yulis swung his embedded sword sideways, shattering the creature’s skull.
(What… just happened?)
Lieselotte could only stare in stunned silence at the scene before her.
The monster that had defeated her knights and had even forced her to flee was brought down so easily.
And the one who did it was the man known as the worthless son.
It would be impossible not to be shocked.
Lieselotte couldn’t tear her eyes away from Yulis as he descended from the now-headless monster, completely dumbfounded.
“…Come to think of it, if I defeat them like this, I don’t have to worry about getting my clothes dirty, right? Wait, did I just discover a secret to cleanliness that would make a housewife happy?”
Yulis sheathed his sword, oddly dropping his shoulders in disappointment.
Slowly, he began walking toward her.
“…u-uh…”
I have to say something. There are so many things I should be asking.
What was that magic? Why is he so strong?
Why did he choose to fight instead of running away?
Even if he’s strong, the Yulis I know would have been the first to abandon someone and run.
I don’t understand. I need to ask.
But for some reason, Lieselotte couldn’t look away from Yulis—
“Uh… are you okay? I tried to take it down with some care, but…”
Before she realized it, Yulis was standing right in front of her.
With the massive monster’s corpse behind him, his expression showed… genuine concern and relief.
“Ah, um…”
—He probably hadn’t planned to say these words.
After all, it was so quiet. It slipped out, almost like a natural murmur, softly from Yulis’s lips.
“…Thank goodness.”
“〜〜〜!?”
They were so close that, no matter how softly he spoke, she could hear him.
That’s why Lieselotte’s face flushed with heat.
And as if in response, her heart suddenly started to race.
