- Chapter 79- Can\'t live
[Haruki’s POV:]
Some days have passed since Emiko shifted next door.
Thankfully, her face wasn’t caught on camera and no one recognized her or this whole apartment would have been swamped by the media.
The flames of her retirement have finally begun to die down from the TV channels but on social media, there were many trending pages based on Emiko’s retirement and farewell.
Now amidst the whole ruckus, the person who should be the most concerned was currently shopping in the same departmental store as me.
For the past few days, Emiko has been visiting my place for varying reasons. And thanks to the friendly relationship she has with my guardians, she just can walk in and out without a single concern.
Whether to share the extra food or to ask for some ingredients, she drops by almost ten times a day. Unexpectedly, she never strikes up a conversation with me—well that doesn’t matter.
However, the way she has been following me these days makes me a little uncomfortable. Not because she was practically stalking me, but the fact that her identity might get revealed at this rate.
‘I have got to do something…’
Once I was done purchasing everything I made a quick exit from the store and hid in the alley right beside the store.
A little more than ten seconds later, a hurried Emiko-san also dashed out and began searching for me, left and right.
I held her by her arm and pulled her into the alley; ignoring her yelp of surprise.
Pushing her back against the wall, I looked into her emerald eyes which had a blend of anxiety and excitement in them…
Feeling the closeness between us after so long and under the influence of those captivating eyes I found myself getting lost—
—not good…need to keep it together.
“Why are you doing this?”
“W-what? I was just shopping.”
I raised my brows before looking into her bag. It was completely empty.
Emiko tried hiding it behind her back and made some lame excuse, “I thought today was a sale on eggs….but since there wasn’t any….”
“Heh~Now Harada Emiko has to be dependent on sales to buy things?”
Although her mouth was covered with a mask, I could feel she just pouted now, “Saving money is always good for a better future.”
I didn’t pursue that matter, but rather returned to the main topic, “What are you doing, Emiko? I just asked for a little time from you so we both can settle our feelings and decide whether we want to continue this relationship or not…yet, you decided everything on your own and even changed your residence.”
“But didn’t you tell me that being stubborn and selfish is allowed?”
I gritted my teeth, ” I spoke out of my impulse that day.”
“Regardless, it’s a matter of fact, Haru-kun, that I can’t live without you. Naturally, I can’t force my way into your house and corner you to talk to me but I surely can live close to you right?”
I looked into her eyes intently as she spoke those words. I can see the determination and stubbornness in her eyes which she was lacking that day when I visited her.
*Rumble*
I don’t know for how long I kept on looking at her, as the sky began to darken and the sound of lightning resonated profoundly.
“So you are not going to back off?”
“No…I simply cannot. You are the sole reason why I am alive, and detaching yourself from me, practically means-”
“Don’t…! Don’t say that…” I covered her mouth before she could have said what I knew she was about to.
Her eyes went a little crescent and her shoulder slumped.
Encircling her arms around my waist she leaned forward and whispered something I was expecting,
“You still care about me, don’t you?”
“Of course, I do. If not, I would have reported Harada Emiko being my neighbor long ago.” I scoffed.
Seriously, although I broke up, it doesn’t mean I have lost all my feelings for her. What was she even thinking?
*Drip* *Drip*
Some seconds later we noticed that the drizzle had transformed into a downpour and our clothes were already getting soaked.
I held her hand and mindlessly ran toward our home with my free hand over my head.
Thankfully we didn’t go too far from our house to shop that’s why within three minutes we were already at our doorsteps.
“*huff* …that was unexpected…” Emiko panted while patting her chest—inviting my eyes to look at those assets but I held myself together and took out the key from my pocket.
Nee-san and Masato-san have gone to meet Masato-san’s sister, in the next town. That’s why they will return early in the morning tomorrow.
Although Rena-nee and Masato-san looked reluctant I convinced them that I was fine.
I was about to enter my house when my eyes went towards a clearly anxious Emiko-san who was searching her pockets and wallet, for some definite reasons.
“You…lost your key?
Slowly and a little timidly she nodded.
Generally, Emiko doesn’t tend to be clumsy but it seems because of the rush the key might have just fallen out of her wallet.
“Where is the spare key?” I asked.
“Naomi has it…but she is out of tow-*achoo*”.
“Bless you…” Seeing her sneeze like this and also the condition in which she is, I felt bad and a tad bit guilty. After all, it was because I held her in the alley that she got drenched.
Without thinking much, I suggested, “Come in. We will look for the key once the rain stops or maybe you can have the lock replaced?”
“Yeah, I can do that….then excuse me…” With her eyes suggesting that she currently was smiling under that mask, Emiko entered my house.
….for some reason, I don’t have a good feeling about all this….
