- Chapter 51- You are the best
The reason why the management school where Haruki studies, has arranged a debate competition, is to improve the vocal skills of the students through some healthy competition based on some social topics.
There were several groups each year, and Haruki was thankful that he didn’t need to look a lot further to search for a group. Those people whom he got to know just some months ago and also his old friend Hayato were performing together.
The debate was to be held next week, and the outline has already been prepared as per the requirement. Now, they have to discuss the pointers that they would be putting up in the debate.
Since Haruki didn’t want to leave the house, he asked whether he could join the others through video call. The reason he brought up was muscle cramps, which surely was a lie.
Thankfully, everyone readily agreed and the time for the meeting was fixed at 12.30.
Now sitting in front of the iPad, which Emiko lent him, Haruki waited for others to join.
[Sup’, Haru-kun!]
The bright visage of the blond gyaru—Kasumi popped on the camera from very close, to the point Haruki was only able to see her eyes in a blur.
“Hey, Sumi-chan…can you distance yourself a little? Can’t see a thing like this.”
[Right…]
As Kasumi fixed the camera on what seemed like a table, she distanced herself from the device and the faces of the other four grew visible.
It seemed they were in some sort of private cabin, with some drinks and snacks served on the table and their books and bags, covering the rest of the place.
The greetings went fine and there was no sort of communication difficulty, even though Haruki wasn’t wearing his earphones.
The glass-wearing girl, Minase Ayumi, asked about Haruki’s cramp, which made Emiko raise her brows from behind the camera, but she didn’t say anything.
Well, as for now that is.
[So yeah, we have prepared some pointers, which might be helpful in the debate. Since every contestant would get a minute and a half to bring forth their opinion, I have tried summarizing everything.]
Izumi Mei, the cheerful raven-haired girl spoke, as she took out her notebook and showed the people, her work, on which she had been working for the past few days.
[Damn…her writing is so neat.]
“Isn’t it?” As Kasumi pointed out, Haruki reflexively affirmed. He has always admired Mei’s handwriting and has complimented her a couple of times in the past as well.
[Gosh, Haru-kun is reacting like a fanboy.]
Kasumi’s comment made the others chuckle, and Haruki seemed a little embarrassed.
*Tap* *Tap*
Suddenly, Haruki heard the sound of tapping from nearby, before he lifted his eyes…only to find Emiko raising her notebook, and showing detailed handwriting, which spelled,
{I was also quite popular for my handwriting, back in the day.}
“…”
Haruki barely held himself from laughing aloud at how adorable she seemed while having such a smug expression.
Regardless, he took the pencil from nearby, and wrote something in his notebook, before flashing it in her direction,
{Everything about is second to no one, Emiko-san. And that includes your handwriting as well.}
…alright, that was a critical hit for Emiko, as she slowly pulled the notebook down. She just needed to hear his opinion, and that’s what mattered the most.
[So yeah, the summary tells us…hmmm…eh?]
Kasumi’s reaction brought Haruki’s focus, back on the screen, as he saw the blond girl, asking the writer of the summary,
[Mei-chan…why have you only touched the outline of the topic without even investing a single line about the core?]
Haruki blinked before he asked, “Can you show me the notebook?”
Kasumi nodded before she turned the notebook in his direction. Haruki read the overview of the subject…but his confusion didn’t go away.
Soon the others also took a look at the summary and they also didn’t have much of an idea, of what Kasumi was talking about.
Met with several question marks, the blond planted her palm over her forehead before elaborating her point,
“Our topic is how Social Media is polarising the society. While Mei-chan wrote about how people start opposing each other based on different opinions and such…she missed the whole point of this debate.”
As Kasumi glanced around, she found everyone thinking deeply at what she was expecting to hear.
Haruki was also trying to think what Kasumi meant by those words when he heard the sound of paper tapping again. Raising his head, he found Emiko holding her notebook with another set of words prepared,
{Topics that majorly bring the dispute between the youths. Example: Celebrities.}
Haruki’s face lit up, as he instantly called out,
“We need to count some of the topics to solidify our argument. Like politics or the media.”
[Correct!]
Kasumi smacked her fist on the table in excitement with a huge smile on her face.
Everyone nodded in agreement with realization dawning upon them.
Seeing everyone focused, Kasumi continued,
[We cannot bring some solid argument until we don’t lead on with concerning topics of today’s generation. Like just yesterday, someone said something vulgar to my idol, Emiko-sama on the inter-]
“Who was it?”
Suddenly, every head turned in Haruki’s direction upon hearing his heavy voice resounding on the speaker.
Even Emiko was taken aback by how serious Haruki looked about this.
Surely, she has faced a lot of criticism in the past and people on social media often say nasty stuff about her, but she never cared about it as much as Haruki seemed to be.
‘I have to keep Haru-kun far away from social media…’ Even though her heart was beating rapidly at how Haruki was offended in her stead, she knew, that if Haruki came to know how the harsh reality of the media, it would make him feel depressed.
