- Chapter 38- The obstacle
Emiko had a…good relationship with her mother in this life.
Unlike how it went in her previous life, Emiko did her best to keep her mother happy with her progression and avoided anything that could have made the elder Harada angry.
It was given that Emiko never dated anyone and also despite being an idol at her high school period, she always avoided breaking some of the rules her mother had set.
And even after moving to Tokyo, she always tried to call her often and visit her hometown at festivals. There was a reason to keep her parents happy as well, however, the primary reason why Emiko has been a good girl until now was to get Haruki accepted by her mother.
“Mom…please don’t make it difficult for him. I already have told you that he is still attending college and your way of interrogation would be too much for Haru-kun.”
A rare sight of Emiko apprehensively requesting her mother could be seen, as the aforementioned drove the car back to the apartment.
It was already six in the evening when her flight landed and the first person the elder woman saw was the face she dearly wanted to see.
However, the warm smile of the mother had already ceased, and what replaced that lively expression was a stern look, that was akin to how she used to remain in her working days as a teacher.
“Whatever I do is in your favor Emiko, so stop saying the same thing, and focus on driving.”
Scrolling through her contacts, the lady seemed to be finding a number, however, Emiko’s focus wasn’t on that, at all.
For some reason, she already regretted telling her mother about this living relationship, all of a sudden.
“I have sent you the contact information of Kouske-kun. It’s his new number so save it and call him when you get time.”
Emiko scrunched her brows upon hearing the name, clearly not able to remember who this person was.
Miyako(Emiko’s mother) sighed heavily seeing the confusion on her daughter’s face before she cleared her doubt.
“Shimazu Kouske, the heir of the BlakeN group of companies. He has visited our house in the past as well.”
After a short contemplation, Emiko finally was able to remember the boy she was talking about, “Oh that big mouth, good for nothing young master on whom I spilled tea during New Year celebration? Yes, I remember him.”
“…” The older one was speechless hearing the specification Emiko had kept in her remembrance regarding the boy she had selected to become her son-in-law.
“Be careful with your words, Emi. He is now handling one of the branches in Tokyo and has become a splendid man in recent years.”
Emiko frowned at that. It wasn’t that she felt displeased about the news, rather the fact that her mother was talking so highly about a man when her focus should have been on Haruki, disturbed Emiko.
Regardless, she didn’t say anything about it anymore.
The silence was short-lived, as Miyako suddenly called out, “Stop the car…I need to go somewhere.”
Emiko blinked in surprise, but she inched the car closer to the pedestrian path and halted the pace to zero.
“What happened?” Emiko asked as she saw her mother untying the seatbelt.
“My friend is admitted to the nearby hospital. I want to check on her first.”
“Then let me drop you there?” Emiko suggested since the nearest hospital was also half a kilometer away.
“No, it would be rush hour there and I have already booked a cab. You go ahead, I will reach the apartment within an hour.”
*Dhak*
Once said, she closed the door without bothering about Emiko’s suggestion and began walking toward the taxi parked just behind Emiko’s car.
Emiko turned from her seat to look at the retreating back of her mother, with a complicated expression marring her face.
However, she soon sighed and turned back toward the steering wheel as a whisper left her lips, “She is unpredictable as ever.”
…
And true to Emiko’s words, the lady didn’t tell the cab driver to take her to the nearest, or any hospital at all.
Her destination was, “Cafe DayLight.”
The driver nodded before he drove through the city roads to approach the cafe situated nearly at the edge of town. There were not many establishments around and mainly residential areas could be spotted.
As the car came to a halt in front of the store, Miyako climbed down before paying the fare and walking toward the cafe.
The two men standing in black suits just at the entrance of the cafe nodded at the lady in greeting, and one of them parted the door for her.
Miyako without hesitation walked inside the deserted cafe where only a few staff members and not a single customer could be seen, except for one.
There were surely people inside but except for the staff members and the sole customer, there were only black outfit-wearing bulky men who easily could be considered bodyguards.
Aligned by the wall, the eight equipped men stood silently, while the person sat not so far from them, and had a nervous expression.
As the lady approached the table, the boy stood up from his seat but before he could bow and introduce himself, Miyako gestured for him to sit back down.
*Ting*
Hearing the bell from the table, one of the staff members rushed toward the only occupied table with a small notepad in his hand, and sweat profoundly accumulated all over his forehead.
“P-Please tel-” However, before the waiter could have asked about the order, Miyako cut in with what she wanted.
“An espresso.” Without even minding whether the person sitting across her had anything to order, Miyako shooed the waiter away.
The old lady then relaxed her shoulders a bit, before she took her glasses off, and rubbed her eyes a little before she finally turned her attention toward the boy sitting in front of her.
The first look he gave was of course…disappointing. However, she swallowed her emotions inside and greeted him in a solemn voice.
“It’s the first time we are meeting…Hayashi Haruki. And I hope it will be the last as well.”
