- Chapter 31- Don\'t leave me...
[Haruki’s POV:]
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Emiko-san smoking in the conference room all alone. My previous anxiety and unease were replaced by pure astonishment as I gazed at her shocked expression.
“H-Haru-kun…t-t-this…” Her voice trembled and just to hide the cigarette she clutched it inside her palm…
Wait!
“What are you doing, Emiko-san?!” I rushed toward the girl before making her open her hand.
Despite being reluctant, she didn’t resist for long before I picked the scrapped cigarette from her hand and threw it aside. Personally, I don’t like throwing things around like this, but at the moment, my attention was solely converged on her palm.
The upper left portion of her smooth skin has reddened which looked painful even from a glance.
“Are you mad at me?” I looked up at her and found slight moisture accumulating in her beautiful emerald eyes.
I was taken aback seeing her cry like this, but soon I collected myself and walked out of the room.
I heard a stifled sob from her, but I needed to take care of the burn first, anyhow.
“Ah, excuse me.” I found a different lady than before who was working at the nearby cubicle.
“Yes?” She snatched her gaze away from the screen with an annoyed expression, clearly not wanting to be disturbed. However, when our eyes locked, her face instantly went pale and her shoulders dropped.
Not bothering about the reason for such a reaction, I asked what I needed, “Do you know where I can get an ice pack and ointment?”
I was slightly panicking since the longer the burn remained, the higher the chance for it to leave a mark.
“Ah, yes…” She immediately got up from her seat and crouched down to get something from the lower cabinet. When she got up there was a transparent bag with a few ice cubes inside and a tube of what seemed like an ointment on the other hand.
“Thank you.” Giving her a slight bow, I took the bag and the tube and rushed back into the conference room.
Emiko-san was still frozen at her spot, the only thing that changed was the number of tears that were now sliding down her cheeks yet her eyes remained parted like some kind of world-shattering news she had heard.
I took hold of her fingers before gently pressing the ice pack over her palm.
“Ssss…” It was me who hissed since the way her skin had turned red, I could feel how it must be burning upon the cold impact.
….Emiko-san didn’t have any reaction.
Her eyes were looking at me in guilt, shame, and plead…and I found her overreacting at the moment. However, until I don’t tell her what I truly feel about this discovery, I believe she won’t be able to get over this shock.
“When I saw you smoking Emiko-san, I found you extremely sexy. And these are my true thoughts so please stop crying, alright?”
“?!!” A big exclamation mark emerged over her head as her eyes widened upon hearing my words.
Alright, I accept that it was too embarrassing to confess something like this, but it was true. At that moment, I found Emiko-san hot enough that it homed a place in my remembrance.
If possible I wanted to take a picture of her in that pose as well…
“A-are you…” Hearing her stutter I nodded my head and replied.
“Yeah, I am telling the truth so there is no need for you to be tensed anymore. While smoking hampers your health, if done in limitation, it’s really alright.”
Emiko-san’s eyes were filled with relief as her shoulders dropped. The tension dissipated as she clutched the ice bag in her hand and extended her arms to encircle my back.
I was slightly surprised but didn’t resist her embrace before I stepped forward and slowly brought my hand around her back.
With her head resting on my shoulder and body leaning on me, Emiko-san seemed so fragile that I found myself witnessing a new side of hers. The usual bold and confident Emiko-san was now replaced by a pitiful girl who just wanted to rely on me.
‘Cute…’ I really wanted to say that to her but I held back. This wasn’t the mood to compliment her and about something like this.
“Haru-kun…you won’t ever leave me, right?”
For a moment, I wasn’t sure whether I heard her correctly or not. The tone with which she raised the question made it seem she was rather desperate to hear a positive response.
‘Seriously…I should be the one saying that…’ Considering how quickly I am getting addicted to Emiko-san, I fear I might not be able to stabilize myself any time soon if Emiko-san one day abandons me.
“I promise, Emiko-san. I will never leave you until you don’t want me to go away. ” Her embrace tightened around my waist, as she snuggled in my chest.
“Mm…thank you…”
I didn’t have any idea why she seemed so different today, but at the moment, I knew she needed my support. And just as I said, until she doesn’t get fed up with me, I would always be by Emiko-san’s side.
Forever.
*****
After I applied ointment on her hand, we decided to return home for the day.
I was contemplative about whether I should call a cab or not considering her palm was injured. For days like these, I really feel like a loser for not having any driving experience.
“Don’t sweat it, Haru-kun. I can drive with a single hand.”
Emiko-san seemed to have energized and returned to her natural self as she chimed in while we walked toward the exit.
“Ah, that reminds me…we didn’t have lunch. What would you like for lunch, Haru-kun?”
Hearing her words, I realized that indeed we hadn’t eaten anything since morning. However, the latter part of her words concerned me.
Turning to look at her, I paused my feet and so did she, before I announced in a determined tone, “Today, I am going to cook for you, Emiko-san. Leave everything to me!”
