- Chapter 19- Friends
“That hurts you know… ” Rubbing my back which the bastard friend of mine has hit quite hard just now, I groaned.
I have come to know many people in the college and some of them have become close acquaintances as well, for example, the people who were waiting for me.
However, this guy—Asuzawa Hayato was my buddy since high school. We have spent day one of our first year together, thanks to the fact that we both arrived late for the first class and had to get embarrassed in front of the class.
Asuzawa Hayato is a nice person in general if he isn’t singing and trying to joke. He looks good and has a tall and broad build as well. He was given a scholarship based on his exceptional rugby talent. A business school offered a sportsman scholarship…quite weird in my opinion.
Well I myself have entered through a scholarship in this university where the normal half-yearly fee of a student exceeds my four-year worth of savings. I was given a hundred percent tuition leeway and just had to take care of my extra expenses like books and food whereas, Hayato was reimbursed seventy percent from his tuition fees.
Quite a good deal we both got. In his case, it was because of his talent and in my situation, I just got exceptionally lucky, that’s it.
“I mean…you never told me about anything related to a hot rich chick suddenly going all lovey-dovey with you.” The word ‘lovey-dovey’ sounded so cringe from him that I released a sigh.
Even though he was hailed as the Hulk of the rugby team back in high school, this guy actually was a Shoujo fan and loved to spend hours in Otome games.
Appearance could be deceiving, this guy was a living example of that phrase.
“She is my cousin who has returned recently after finishing her graduation. Her family is rich and she also works herself that’s why she has that car.”
We both walked back to the group as I told him a blatant lie. Hayato was aware of my family and various things about my personal life but the sudden appearance of my cousin wasn’t something he would suspect.
“Morning, Haruki. ”
“Good morning, Haru-kun.”
“Sup buddy.”
“Hello.”
From the left was the gyaru-type blond girl, Fujiwara Kasumi, preferably called Sumi-chan. The bright raven-haired one was Izumi Mei. The cool dude with brown hair and ear piercings was Sawada Koichi and the last bespectacled girl with a thick book as always held in her arms was Minase Ayumi.
These four people have become good friends in the college. We got to know each other recently because we were grouped together. Before the grouping I only knew Minase Ayumi since we both liked to spend some hours in the library after lectures.
“Hey, guys. Sorry for the delay. ” We exchanged greetings before we began walking toward the campus.
The place was humungous with each year having a separate building. Two blocks for hostel dorms, one separate building for the library, and another one for sports. There were two playgrounds for outdoor sports as well.
There was a cafeteria in each academic block to avoid any hassle during breaks. All three blocks have a floor dedicated to the teachers as well so they don’t need to wander around and provide their most of the time to the students.
The college organizes many events and trips to educate students through different means. And the package one could get after finishing the four-year integrated master’s degree from here was like a dream come true for someone like me.
“So Haruki…was that girl really your cousin?”
Koichi asked me with his fingers intertwined behind his head. The three girls were walking a little ahead of us while discussing something useful yet these guys…
‘Well, I would have asked them something like this as well if it wasn’t about me… ‘ I sighed before replying to the guy in a neutral tone, “Yup. She just returned and didn’t want me to go to college today. But well, since we need to finish the project soon I convinced her somehow.”
It wasn’t that I was embarrassed introducing Harada-san as my girlfriend but in the first place they wouldn’t believe me and second, if I were to reveal anything about our relationship, it would hamper Harada-san’s reputation.
If it had been just Hayato then I might have considered telling him that I have got someone as my lover but other than him…yeah, it was a little stretch to believe them.
“Anyway, have you guys heard about the group discussion event the college will be organizing next week?”
Maybe Hayato sensed my discomfort continuing the matter as he hurriedly changed the topic.
Koichi seemed to want to continue the talk about my ‘cousin’ but thankfully he didn’t go out of the way to disregard Hayato’s initiative as he replied in his usual tone, “The debate and the GD that happens every August and May. Yeah, what about it?”
I have heard about it but didn’t have much information regarding the event so I silently listened to them.
“Well, it seems we all have to participate either in the GD or the debate to gain points which would help us during semester exams. The debate would also be held between teams of six people and so would be the Group Discussion.”
“Six people eh… ” I muttered under my breath since despite having six people around currently, I couldn’t say we were actually a group since we were together out of obligation.
Unlike Ayumi-san and Koichi right here, I wasn’t that smart and presentable when it came to public speaking and such. Even in high school I usually took jobs during the school festivals where I had to converse with fewer people.
Thanks to my food-delivering job I have gotten somewhat used to associating with new people and talking to them without creating any awkwardness. But to speak on the stage where every gaze would be focused on me…nope, not something I was confident in.
And since not only Hayato but the other four have also realized this trait of mine, I hardly believe anyone would think of adding me to their group. Ayumi might ask me out of courtesy but…
“When are we starting the preparation for debate?”
My downcast gaze suddenly landed on the blond gyaru who suddenly neared our group along with Ayumi-san and Izumi-san as she asked with her brows raised.
“We need to discuss the topic of the debate first, no?” Izumi-san said, with her index finger pressed against her chin.
“Slavery, it’s decided,” Ayumi said in her usual deadpan tone to which Koichi responded in a flustered manner, “We are not living in the 80’s Ayumi-san. Why slavery?”
“Then how about we try abolishing fish with honey through debate?” Hayato raised his finger like he had a brilliant idea suddenly.
“That surely would make us a laughing stock, nothing else Asuzawa-san-”
“Wait a second!” Unable to resist anymore I suddenly paused in my walk and so did everyone upon hearing my exclaim.
“Are you guys participating together in the Debate competition as well?”
I blinked in complete astonishment since as they were talking, it seemed they already had accepted the fact like it was nothing to be concerned about.
“Yeah…and not only us but you as well, Haruki. ” Kasumi-san spoke with her left hand resting over her waist in a tone that seemed like she was just stating a matter of fact.
I looked at the others and saw an understanding look in their eyes and a soft smile on their lips. Even Ayumi, who generally remains stoic had a small smile lifting the left side of her lips.
“Even though you guys know that I… ”
“We know that Haruki-san but if we, your friends, won’t help you get over your insecurities and help you get better then who would?” Izumi-san tilted her head as she said those words like she already knew how I was feeling about this whole situation.
I looked at Hayato and instantly knew that he was the one who told them about my shortcomings but seeing that no one was forcing themselves to support me, I also didn’t make any unnecessary scene.
With a bow of my head, I extended my heartfelt gratitude, “Thank you for giving me the chance. I will do my best to not disappoint you guys.”
