Writing The Final Episode First, Then Writing The Next One.
“I was having what kind of dream…”
The next morning.
Upon waking, Naoki muttered to himself.
It was a phrase he had repeated countless times.
Chiharu’s infidelity, the hellish rumors and persecution, his encounter with Kirara, and everything that followed.
For Naoki, who had always been a dull otaku, all of it felt like a dream.
Even among those experiences, yesterday’s events were extraordinary.
Feeling anxious, he checked his phone.
There, he saw the call log clearly showing the hour-long conversation with Kirara from the previous night until they both fell asleep.
He also confirmed the earlier exchange: “Good night, Asshi. I love you.” “I love you too.” “…Can we talk for just a little bit?”
Relieved, he smiled, a mix of warm happiness and slight embarrassment tugging at the corners of his mouth.
“To think that I, of all people, would actually end up in a relationship with Hanabusa-san…”
Deep down, Naoki believed that his relationship with Kirara would eventually come to an end.
She might lose interest, find a boyfriend, or he might be the one to break it off.
In any case, there was no way a pretense of being lovers could last forever, and someone as wonderful as her would never truly date someone like him.
So, he had been careful not to set his hopes too high.
Chiharu’s betrayal had painfully taught him the agony of losing someone he loved.
He had thought that if it meant going through that pain again, he would rather never fall in love.
And yet, just the thought of breaking up with Kirara, even though they weren’t officially together, felt like it would tear his heart apart.
At some point, he had fallen for Kirara so deeply that there was no turning back.
Then came yesterday’s unexpected event.
In the heat of the moment during a tense situation, he ended up confessing his feelings.
He hadn’t expected it to go well.
If it didn’t work out, as long as Kirara could reconcile with the gals, he would have been fine with that.
No, to be honest, it would have hurt him more than when Chiharu cheated on him…
It was meant to be a once-in-a-lifetime gamble, but when he took the plunge, Kirara accepted his confession without hesitation.
Not only that, when he tried to end their pretend relationship, she cried and clung to him.
Apparently, Kirara had felt the same way all along.
He still didn’t understand what she could possibly see in someone like him…
No, no more self-deprecation.
After all, Naoki was now truly Kirara’s boyfriend.
More than ever, he needed to get his act together and become the kind of man worthy of Kirara, or else people would laugh at her.
His phone buzzed with a new message.
“Good morning. Are you already up?”
“Good morning. I just woke up.”
“I see.”
“Yeah.”
Naoki felt a wave of anxiety.
What if she asked him to pretend like it never happened?
Even at this point, such thoughts crept into his mind.
When the conversation on Line suddenly stopped, his anxiety only grew worse.
He wanted to send a message, but he was too scared to type anything.
He couldn’t focus on getting ready for the day, gripping his phone tightly while remaining glued to the bed.
After some time, a message finally came through.
“…We really are a couple now, right?”
In Naoki’s mind, the words played back with a hint of regret.
Taking a deep breath, Naoki slapped his cheeks to snap out of it.
That was just a phantom born from his own insecurities.
Kirara might be a beautiful girl, but deep down, she was an inexperienced and innocent girl when it came to romance.
If anyone was feeling uneasy, it was probably her, far more than him.
This was his moment to take the lead as the more experienced one.
“Of course. It’s too late to back out now, even if you wanted to.”
What if his response was off the mark?
His heart raced as he sent the message.
The wait for her reply felt excruciatingly long.
“I won’t back out! And I’m not letting you go either, Asshi!”
“I won’t run. That’s why I confessed properly, isn’t it?”
For a moment, there was silence.
“Idiot.”
Another message from Kirara followed.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“Say it properly.”
“I love you, Kirara.”
“I’m so happy I could die.”
“Me too.”
“…It really feels like a dream.”
Feeling as though he had already accomplished his goal for the day, Naoki cheerfully started getting ready.
He couldn’t wait to get to school and see Kirara.
***
The chime signaling the start of lunch break rang out.
Naoki had been distracted throughout class, constantly glancing at the clock.
Since they were in different classes, it was difficult for him to find opportunities to see her.
Even when they occasionally passed each other during short breaks, they both felt too shy to stop and chat.
When he looked toward the classroom entrance, he caught sight of Kirara sprinting over. Their eyes met.
She looked as though she were an Orihime reuniting with Hikoboshi after a year apart. Her face froze, and she stumbled over Naoki’s name before quickly hiding behind the door.
Naoki scratched his cheek with the hand he had raised to greet her, a happy yet wry smile on his face.
Honestly, she’s such a shy girl for someone with a reputation like hers.
“Hey, Hana-chan! What are you getting so embarrassed for?”
“If you keep hesitating, lunchtime will be over before you know it!”
“Ashimura! Let’s have lunch together!”
“Wait, everyone!? O-okay, I get it! Stop pushing me!”
Kirara was practically shoved into the classroom by her group of gal friends.
“Idiot, Konna! Read the room!”
“They’re all lovey-dovey, so let’s not get in the way.”
“No way! I want to have lunch together too!”
Linda grabbed the back of Konna’s collar and started dragging her away.
“Next time, okay?”
When Naoki waved his hand, Minto winked at him with a meaningful look and said, “Have fun~!”
“Wait, everyone!? Don’t leave me behind!”
Left alone, Kirara looked around in a flustered panic.
Naoki stood up and walked over to meet her.
“You don’t mind having lunch with just the two of us, do you?”
He smiled with a playful grin.
Kirara stiffened and blushed, gazing at Naoki with a dreamy expression.
“…Of course not. Don’t make me say it.”
She gently punched him on the shoulder, her voice softening.
“Alright, then let’s go.”
“…Okay.”
With a demure Kirara in tow, Naoki led her out of the classroom.
“Whoo-hoo!”
Ignoring the teasing from Washiya, Naoki simply raised his middle finger over his shoulder as they left.
