When I was Reincarnated into a Game World, I Was a Farmer’s Son - Chapter 63
Chapter 63
We leave the town of Sente and begin walking towards the Natchez River. Meruru, who is being carried by Saros, seems to be in a bad mood since morning.
It turns out that she actually wanted to eat dinner with us last night, but she was sleeping so soundly that she didn’t even wake up when Saros tried to wake her up.
She apparently got very angry at Saros, asking him why he didn’t wake her up. Meruru, feeling down, would occasionally hit Saros’ shoulder lightly and let out a frustrated groan.
Saros, with a wry smile, tells me about Natchez River.
“It’s a big river, but the current is slow, so even if we cross it using a boat, there shouldn’t be any problem. Don’t worry, we can handle a little rain too.”
Saros looks up at the cloudy sky. As for the boat, there are no services for us to rent a boat, so we will need to rely on fishermen who make a living by fishing in the river to take us across in their boats.
There are settlements on both sides of the river, though they might not be considered as a village because they are really small. It seems that the people who lives there are mostly fishermen.
There are some shops and houses there, but the prices for accommodations are ridiculously high. So we need to cross the river today.
After walking for quite a while, we can see the river and a few buildings in the distance.
It’s starting to rain. I quickly take out my coat from my bag and put it on. The road is getting more and more muddy.
By the time we reach the river, the rain is pouring down heavily. There doesn’t seem to be anyone around. However, there are several unnatural marks on the muddy ground as if something has been dragged. Perhaps they hurriedly pulled their boats ashore because of the heavy rain?
The width of the river seems to be quite big, but I can’t see it clearly because of the heavy rain. According to Saros, there is also a settlement on the opposite side of the river.
“Hmm. With this heavy rain, they might not let us take their boat.”
While keeping an eye on Meruru who is bothered by the rain, Saros looks around.
Saros decides to go around knocking on doors. However, there is no response. There is no sense of human presence from any of the houses, it’s dark inside.
Saros seems to notice the dragged marks on the grounds as well, all of the tracks lead to an entrance of a building.
Someone might be inside that house? We approach the building and knock on the door.
Not long after, the door opens slightly.
“Umm, may I help you?”
I man peeks out from the slightly opened door and asked.
I can’t see what’s happening inside from the gap, it’s too dark.
“Ah, sorry. Actually, we want to cross the river. Is it possible for us to take one of the boats?”
Saros asked so.
“A boat…in this heavy rain? That’s impossible.”
“Please, we need to cross the river, is there any way you can help us?”
Saros asked him with an apologetic tone, however, contrary to his voice, Saros face seems unexpectedly stern, he is looking at the man with sharp eyes.
Saros slowly put down Meruru, whom he had been carrying and entrusted her to me.
“I can’t give you a boat. Please leave.”
The man tries to close the door, but Saros grabs the door, holding it back.
“Please, we really need a boat.”
The man freezes.
Slowly, he disappears into the darkness of the room.
Suddenly, from the spot where the man had been, something comes flying.
Realizing that it’s a knife thrusting towards him, Saros swiftly dodges the knife, grabs the man’s arm, and slamming the man into the ground right in front of me.
I’m stunned, I can’t get a grasp of the situation. As Meruru clings tightly onto my back, I come back to my senses.
I can’t let my guard down. Despite my confusion, I can sense that there is something dangerous happening.
