Chapter 6

In my previous life as Keiichi Yamada, I was a gamer.

Even though I say I was a gamer, I wasn’t particularly skilled in FPS or action games due to my bad eyesight, and on top of that my motor skills just can’t keep up with the games. So, instead, I mainly played RPG games.

I didn’t get hooked on video games until I was much older.

After graduating from university, I joined a large trading company as a new graduate and worked there until retirement.

Since I didn’t have any particular hobbies, I dedicated myself to my work and managed to earn a decent income, enough to support my wife and children.

As retirement was approaching, my wife and I often discussed our plans for life after retirement.

My wife was really worried of me that I who was a workaholic with no particular hobbies, would lose my will to live if I suddenly stop working, so she made various suggestions.

After discussing with her for quite some time, we decided that after retirement, we would travel and enjoy our time together as a couple. Surprisingly, I was looking forward to the trip with my wife.

However, a few days after I retired, my wife suddenly fell seriously ill and passed away.

The loss of the love of my life, my wife, hit me hard.

Because I didn’t have a job anymore, I ended up shutting myself in from the world for a quite some time.

I shut myself in my room for several years, and ended up making my children and grandchildren worry, however, one day I decided to overcome the loss of my wife and move on with life.

I needed to find something to keep me busy.

I reached out to some former work colleagues who had also retired, seeking their advice. However, their suggestions revolved around gambling activities like pachinko, mahjong, or sports like golf. None of those really interested me.

Even though not as a hobby, I had practiced karate since my high school days, and I even continued practicing karate for quite some time after becoming a working adult. However, due to the demands of my job, I eventually had to quit. I didn’t consider practicing karate again because as I grew older, my body wasn’t as strong as it was in my youth.

Then one day, my son and daughter-in-law came to visit me with my grandchild. While we were talking and catching up with each other’s, my grandchild who was in middle school began pleading for a popular game he wanted, he said that all the kids at their school had it.

My son and daughter-in-law scolded my grandchild for being too demanding and selfish, but he didn’t want to be the only one who don’t have that game at school, and he started throwing a tantrum.

Seeing my grandchild throwing a tantrum reminded me of the past.

When I was young, I knew that my family is not financially well-off. My father is a single parent and he raised me alone. There was also one time when I begged my father to buy me a video game.

Even as a child, I knew that it would be impossible for him to buy it for me, but I kept persisting and made my father quite troubled.

In the end, I didn’t get the video game, but looking back, I wonder why I wanted it so badly even though I knew it would trouble my father.

At that time, remembering the old days sparked my interest in video games.

So, I decided to give gaming a try as my new hobby.

I ended up buying the game that my grandchild had been begging for him, but in return, I asked him to teach me about the latest video games and tried out some of his recommendation for me. it was really nice to bond with my grandchild through gaming discussions. However, many of his game recommendations had high difficulty levels or made me feel motion sickness, so I quickly stopped playing them.

In the midst of this, I came across news on the internet about a remake of an RPG game title that was popular in my high school days. So, I decided to give it a try, and before I knew it, I was completely into it.

The controls were simple, and I could progress through the story at my own pace, which was great. The process of gradually levelling up and achieving goals suited my gaming taste as well.

Then, thanks to that game, I continued playing various RPG games, spending most of my time gaming until I got sick and had to be hospitalized.

I remembered the name kingdom of Eldor and Machikane village because it was in the game that made me hooked on gaming, the game is called “Demna Senki”.
