When I was Reincarnated into a Game World, I Was a Farmer’s Son - Chapter 46
Chapter 46
It has been several weeks since the Murasaki disease was first found in our fields. Slowly but surely, the disease is spreading. More and more of the crops in our field turns purple.
The Murasaki disease has spread not only in the fields but also on the roads near the villagers’ houses and grasslands. However, the lands near the forest seems to be remain unaffected somehow.
It is said that the disease doesn’t affect human body. Hearing that makes me feel a sense of relief.
Upon receiving the village chief’s notification, a few officials of the lord and their entourage visited the village to check on the situation.
According to the officials, the disease seems to be spreading in various parts of the continent, but the domestic damage is relatively minimal compared to what happened several decades ago. However, there is information that the neighbouring country has suffered significant losses due to this outbreak.
The neighbouring country…
The neighbouring country is also part of the game’s setting.
The game follows the protagonist who is the son of a merchant. However, both of the protagonist’s parents were imprisoned and executed for a false crime.
The prologue of the story begins with the protagonist coming to the country where I live right now as a criminal slave, seeking revenge against the noble who framed them.
The protagonist’s parents are falsely accused of being the catalyst of a food crisis caused by a massive crop failure that came to the country.
The game didn’t tell us the detailed explanations of it, but perhaps the cause of the crop failure was the Murasaki disease.
And from the middle stages of the story onward, the protagonist and their companions discover that the cause of the crop failure lies with the main boss. Then finally, they fight against the boss, who are also responsible for the death of the protagonist’s parents.
The officials have confirmed the crop damage and have received instructions from the lord to reduce taxes accordingly. They have been inspecting all the fields in the village thoroughly for about five days.
It seems that Machikane Village has been contributing about 30% of its annual wheat harvest. According to the officials, the overall damage from the Murasaki disease in Machikane Village is actually not that significant.
However, the disease has a quite big impact for us, we have the largest field in the village after all. A big amount of wheats and vegetables used to grow in our field, but now most of our field has turned into dark and purplish colour. To be honest, our field looks like a poisonous swamp.
Our family suffers the most from this disease in the village. Because of it, we are granted a full exemption from taxes by the officials.
After the officials leave the village, my father, mother, and I gaze upon the transformed and devastated field.
Even though taxes are exempted, life has become significantly difficult. Above all, it is heart breaking, frustrating and infuriating to see our hard work on the crops, nurtured day after day by our family of three, is now just withering away. The land that our ancestors had sacrificed their lives to cultivate will no longer be able to grow new crops for the foreseeable future.
Both my father and mother, perhaps trying to appear strong in front of me, seem calm. However, as their son, I can sense their profound sadness and anxiety about the uncertain future.
If I defeat the final boss, the land should be restored.
But I am incapable of defeating the final boss.
As a mere farmer’s boy, I won’t be able to defeat the boss. I won’t be strong enough.
All I can do now is to do whatever I can to help and support my parents.
