When I was Reincarnated into a Game World, I Was a Farmer’s Son - Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Even with the memories of my previous life, my life as Neil remains the same. I still help my mom and dad at the farm and spend most of my days by their side.
In Machikane Village, almost everyone here is a farmer.
The area around the village has fewer monsters, has a really good climate, and the land is fertile, so the farmers in Machikane Village have stable crop yields. Compared to farmers in other areas, the farmers here are relatively prosperous. My family has the largest plot of land in the village.
It is said that my great-grandfather was one of the early farmers who moved to here when it is not even a village yet. At that time, he pioneered the development of Machikane village and was given quite some part of land by the land lord.
Even though I say we are “prosperous”, it is a relative term to other farmers, everyone has a standard of living. Our standard of living is still quite poor compared to wealthy merchants and nobles.
However, I actually don’t need to help my mom and dad all day long, I still can play freely during day time, whereas the children of Machikane Village are often expected to help with their family’s farming work all day long.
Since the children here spend most of our time helping out, we don’t play with each other very often, and although I knew their faces and names, we did not have much opportunity to talk to each other.
One day, when I am helping dad to load vegetables onto a cart so that he can take them to the Northern town, three village children and a middle aged-man from the village comes to us.
“Hey, Doug, Neil-kun, good morning.”
After the uncle greets me good morning, the three children greet me in the same way, so I returned the greeting.
If I’m not mistaken, it’s uncle Mino, Takuru-kun, Sante-kun and Ram-chan, right? I wonder what brings them here?
“Ah, Mino. You’re here early. I haven’t finished loading them up yet, so give me a minute.”
Listening to their conversation, it seems that they are going to go with dad to town today.
The children look excited about going to town and they came here earlier than planned. In the meantime, they decided to help up loading the vegetables onto the cart. Seeing the three kids with their joyful expressions on their faces, makes me feel as if I’m looking at my own grandchildren from my past life, I find it endearing.
Since there is hardly any form of entertainment in our village, going to the town is like a source of amusement for the children. I haven’t been to the town myself, so I’m a little envious.
However, considering it takes half a day of walking to reach there, it must be quite tiring. But despite of it, the children here are always excited whenever they go to town.
I haven’t talked much with the three kids before, but as we happily load the vegetables together, they start to talk to me casually, and while we are happily talking to each other, something caught my attention.
It seems that their purpose going to town this time is for the three children, who have all turned 10 years old, to go to the church and listen to a message from God.
Hmm? Is it some kind of religious ritual around here?
After we finish loading the vegetables and ready the cart, dad, Uncle Mino, and the three children head towards the town, while Mother and I see them off.
“Hey, Mom. Will I also go to the town when I turn 10?”
“Yeah, that’s right. In this country, it’s a custom for all children to go to the church and listen to a message from God when they turn 10. Usually, it costs quite a bit of money to check your status, but when you turn 10, they show it to you for free just once.”
“Hmm, I see… Eh!? Status!?”
“What’s the matter? You suddenly yelled.”
“No, no, no! Mom, what do you mean by status!?”
“Hmm? You don’t know what a status is? Status is something that God tells each person what they are good at. Your father and I also received our messages from God when we were little and saw our own statuses.”
“Is this status has some numbers written on it?”
“Yeah, that’s right. You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? The status has numbers written on it.”
Seriously, what the hell is this world!?
