When I was Reincarnated into a Game World, I Was a Farmer’s Son - Chapter 33
Chapter 33
I continue to fight and hunt monsters every day in order to level up quickly.
Even now, encountering a monster still makes me nervous every time, but I have become quite used to hunting monsters. Because I’m already quite used to hunting monsters, I’ve become quite confident in myself. Then, confidence leads to calmness during battles, allowing me to defeat monsters without any trouble.
In addition to getting used to hunting monsters, I can feel my strength grows as my status values increase. Even though my job is still a farmer, I feel a lot stronger than the first time I encounter that Horn Saber.
I want to continue to raise my level at this pace, however as my level grows, the required experience points needed for the next level will inevitably increase as well. If I keep gaining experience points from the weak monsters I’m currently fighting, my progress will definitely slow down soon.
Perhaps there is no need to rush, but the sooner I level up, the better. I never know when a strong monster might attack Machikane Village and threaten my father and mother.
Generally, the area around Machikane Village is quite peaceful and no one here will likely to encounter a monster as long as they don’t enter the forest, but you never know when that situation might suddenly change.
As a farmer, my job has significantly lower status values compared to other jobs, so it’s really important for me to reach high levels.
Once I become a little stronger, I might need to go into the deeper parts of the forest, and engage in battles with slightly stronger monsters than the ones I’m currently fighting.
As usual, right now, I just finished fighting against a Forest Wolf in the forest’s edge, near the lake.
By the way, during one of the fights, my wooden spear broke. In fact, it has happened a few times now during battles.
At first, I panicked and didn’t know what to do, but after experiencing it multiple times, I have learned that staying calm in fights is really important. All I have to do is dodge the monsters’ attacks, wait for my chance, pick up a stone, throw it to stun them, and then finally finish them off.
In my previous life as Keiichi Yamada, I had practiced karate for decades, so thanks to that experience, I’m able to fight smoothly even without weapons. However, this is just a temporary solution when my wooden spear breaks, as kicking or punching with bare hands can be quite painful.
Despite their fluffy and rabbit-like appearance, Horn Sabers’ body are still quite tough because they are monsters after all.
Whenever my wooden spear breaks, I have no choice but to go home. It’s not easy to find a stick that is hard enough to be used in combat after all. I bet there are some in the forest, but searching for one in the forest is dangerous as it exposes me to the risk of being attacked by monsters.
Even though I only have hunted two monsters today, I decided to go back home.
I used to collect wooden sticks while training during my runs, but I haven’t been training and have been spending all my time hunting monsters lately, so my stock is running low. Perhaps today, while going for a run, I’ll try to find some wooden sticks along the way.
After leaving the lake and returning to Machikane Village, I noticed a crowd gathered in the centre of the village. Curious, I approach the crowd and find a group of people at the centre of the crowd.
They all are in shiny silver armour with swords at their hips. There are also dozens of people carrying large axes.
Could it be, bandits? Thieves? However, they have quite a neat appearance, and the villagers who are gathering don’t seem to be under attack. In fact, it is rather a peaceful atmosphere.
Oh, there’s dad.
I spotted him in the midst of the crowd. I go over to him and call him out.
“Dad, what’s happening?”
“Oh! Neil! Welcome back! By the way, where do you always go play? You don’t happen to go to the forest, do you?”
“W-What are you talking about dad? There’s no way that I would go to the forest, I’m afraid of being attacked by monsters. I was just playing at the outskirts of the village. Besides, what’s happening? Why is everyone crowding together? Who are those guys?
“Ah, that’s right! This is your first time seeing lord’s knights, isn’t it?”
It appears that the people in shining armour are knights serving the lord, while those who are carrying axes appears to be lumberjacks.
Firewood is an essential part of people’s lives in this world. It is used for cooking and providing warmth during the winter. In towns and big cities, there is an organization called the Commercial Guild that manages and sells firewood for people at a reasonable price.
However, in remote villages like Machikane, there is no such thing as a Commercial Guild.
In fact, there aren’t even any shops in the village. We only have a traveling merchant who occasionally visits about once a month.
In order to get firewood, you have to cut down trees. That means the lumberjacks have to enter the forest to cut wood, which exposes them to the danger of being attacked by monsters. Therefore, it is really difficult for people in Machikane village to obtain firewood because no one can fight monsters here.
To address this issue, every few years, the knights and lumberjacks are commanded by the lord to visit remote villages like Machikane to get a sufficient amount of firewood to stockpile for a while.
The knights’ job is to protect the lumberjacks from monsters while they are cutting wood.
However, in Northern town, which is the closest town from Machikane village, it is said that the town sends out requests for firewood through the Adventurers’ Guild instead relying on lord’s knights and lumberjacks.
Since Machikane village doesn’t have adventurers or an Adventurers’ Guild, it’s quite hard to live in a remote village like here without such resources.
