Chapter 22.5: Interlude – A Perfect Princess
“…I really nailed it today.”
I gave myself a small, proud nod.
Just a little while ago, I’d confessed my feelings for the very first time in my life.
And not to just anyone—to my darling, Yuma Kanbara-senpai.
Even now, minutes later, my heart wouldn’t stop pounding.
Just remembering that moment made my cheeks flush and sent soft little butterflies fluttering through my chest.
“Thanks, Onee-chan.”
I glanced over and whispered my gratitude to my sister, who was currently fast asleep in front of me.
Honestly, the way she screamed and then passed out had been a lifesaver.
If she hadn’t collapsed, I definitely would’ve died from secondhand embarrassment.
I would’ve short-circuited right there in front of senpai, no question.
Weird as it sounds, I owed her for giving me the opening to finish my confession without falling apart.
Right now, I was sitting in the school infirmary.
After she fainted, senpai carried her all the way here.
He told the nurse it was just a dizzy spell, and she gave us a bed to let her rest.
Senpai’s already gone now.
If he’d stayed, there’s no doubt my sister would’ve woken up and immediately picked a fight.
Also, being alone with him in the same room? I probably would’ve melted into a nervous puddle, so I gently shooed him away.
The school nurse had stepped out too, saying she had errands to run.
“…I get that she was shocked, but fainting? Wasn’t that a bit much?”
I knew she loved me—but even so, this level of drama was something else.
While I waited for her to wake up, I found myself thinking back over the whirlwind of events since I discovered my darling in-game husband was actually Yuma-senpai.
The first thing I felt was total shock.
I’d been way too confident—convinced I didn’t have any rivals.
That was my biggest mistake.
Back then, I just kind of assumed senpai wasn’t that popular.
But once I calmed down and actually thought it through, it was obvious.
Of course someone as kind and sweet as him would have girls crushing on him.
What really blindsided me, though, was how insanely powerful those rivals turned out to be.
The Fairy-senpai.
The Princess-Prince-senpai.
The Saintess-senpai.
Everyone called them by those fantasy-RPG nicknames—and eventually, I started using them too.
They weren’t just pretty. They were top-tier. Untouchably beautiful. Like elite final bosses.
Even I had to admit it. They were seriously, unfairly adorable.
But the scariest of all was Saintess-senpai—his childhood friend.
The second I saw her up close, I nearly gave up right then and there.
She was too beautiful. Like, unreal beautiful.
And the way she clung to senpai with that whole “he belongs to me” aura… yeah, that one really stung.
I genuinely felt like throwing in the towel.
She was the final boss.
That kind of unbeatable RPG enemy you challenge again and again, only to get wrecked every time.
And on top of that, I had to deal with my own sister playing the overprotective gatekeeper.
Sure, she’s sweet… but she’s also way too intense.
Even so…
Even with all of that stacked against me…
I didn’t give up.
When I convinced Ayane-chan to help set up that double date, I was totally on fire.
The plan was brilliant—like, I deserve a trophy or at least a good self-high-five.
Outsmarting one of the “princess” rivals and pulling off that double date felt like a perfect win…
Until it all started spiraling.
Halfway through, everything went off the rails.
My sister and her little squad kept butting in every chance they got.
I usually let things slide, but even I was seriously annoyed that day.
It took everything I had not to yell at them.
Then, I found out Saintess-senpai had scored a one-on-one date.
I was this close to going full sabotage mode…
But I couldn’t find out where it was.
Had to give up—and I still haven’t let go of that frustration.
And then things really escalated.
I was just gaming with senpai like usual, and out of nowhere, he told me he’d been confessed to in real life.
Cue panic mode.
And who were the ones who confessed?
Fairy-senpai and Princess-Prince-senpai.
I’m pretty sure they got spooked by Saintess-senpai’s dramatic entrance and decided to move fast.
That’s when I realized—if I didn’t act soon, I’d be the one left behind.
So I made up my mind.
I practiced my smile in the mirror.
I walked around my room, saying my lines over and over.
And today—finally—I pulled it off.
I did it.
And honestly? I think I deserve full marks.
I worked hard. I gave it my all. No one can take that from me.
“…Huh? Kanon-chan?”
Snapped out of my thoughts, I turned to see my sister slowly waking up.
“Ah… I get it now. It was all just a dream, wasn’t it?”
“…?”
“There’s no way Kanon-chan would ever say something like that to that guy. Honestly, I can’t believe I confused a dream for reality. How careless of me… To think a girl like me could slip up like this. I must be overworked. I really need to start taking better care of my health—mentally and physically.”
Yep. She’d gone full-on delusional.
But I couldn’t let it slide—not now.
She was going to find out eventually anyway.
Might as well rip the band-aid off while it’s just the two of us.
“I confessed, you know. To Yuma Kanbara-senpai.”
The moment I said it, her face went pale—like she’d seen a ghost.
Worse than when someone stole the strawberry off her cake.
It kind of hurt to see her like that…
But pretending it didn’t happen wouldn’t help anyone. I had to face this.
“Still dreaming, huh? Maybe I just need to sleep a little longer.”
“It’s not a dream. It’s real.”
“Even in my dreams, Kanon-chan’s the cutest girl ever. Alright then, goodnight.”
“Wait! Kanon’s serious!”
I grabbed her and shook her before she could drift back into fantasyland.
“I’m gonna tell you why Senpai is so amazing. So please—just listen.”
“No! I don’t wanna hear it!”
“Don’t act like a little kid! If you won’t listen… I might start to hate you, you know!”
“…!”
That one hit her like a critical blow.
She froze up the moment I dropped that line.
“…Fine. I’ll hear you out—for now. But before that…”
She pulled her phone out of her bag.
“First, I need to send a very strongly-worded message. Honestly, this is all her fault for being so unreliable. Getting sick at a time like this—without even thinking about how this would affect me…”
She muttered while furiously typing.
Not a complaint, exactly. More like a spiteful monologue wrapped in plausible deniability.
A few moments later, she looked back at me with a tired, resigned expression.
“…I don’t want to, but fine. Let’s hear it.”
“I’ll start from our fated first meeting.”
“Ugh… I don’t think I’ve ever not wanted to hear something this badly.”
“Nope. You’re listening. This is non-negotiable.”
So, I told her everything—from the very beginning.
How we met in the game.
How we teamed up.
How our bond grew through late-night chats, monster hunts, and our cozy virtual home.
How we got married in-game.
How I slowly realized that my beloved “Darling” was actually Yuma-senpai.
And how that led me here—to this day.
“I love Senpai.”
“Ugh…”
“We’re partners in-game and in real life.”
“Gah…”
“And someday, I want us to be a family.”
“GGAHH!”
By the time she finished, a good chunk of time had passed.
“…And that’s why—long story short—Senpai’s a great guy. I know we’ll be happy if we get married. So I want your support… and your blessing too.”
I’m not always great at putting my feelings into words.
But today?
Today, I think I really pulled it off.
Everything I wanted to say—came out just right.
No regrets. No fumbles.
Honestly, today was perfect.
Straight full marks.
“Huh? Onee-chan?”
After hearing the whole story, she’d stopped moving.
Looks like she fell asleep somewhere in the middle.
“Well… it can’t be helped. I’ll just start from the beginning again once we’re home.”
With no other choice, I called home and asked someone to come pick us up.
Even the quiet time spent waiting for our ride felt peaceful. Fulfilling.
Yep—today was perfect in every way.
A full-score kind of day.
