Chapter 6 – Natural Duty as a Boyfriend
“…I really think that relationships are a very difficult thing to deal with.”
“Is it really difficult for you?”
“To be honest, yes. It’s quite hard work.”
Yozora-senpai was obviously feeling down. I didn’t expect her to say such a thing, and I was a little taken aback.
But what I’ve seen is only Yozora-senpai when she’s in public. She’s a human being, so it’s natural that she’s vulnerable and has her own problems. I know that from our past interactions.
I should probably be the one who can spoil her. I’m her boyfriend, so it’s my natural role to support her.
“If you have a problem or a complaint, I’ll listen, okay?”
“Mm… Perhaps it’s not a very good idea, but since you’re here, maybe I should ask you to listen to me. I’m sure it will be easier just to talk about it…”
“Yes, I’m sure it is.”
Yozora-senpai looked a little relieved at my suggestion. She can talk to someone. That alone must have lightened her heart.
Popular people get a lot of things said about them, both good and bad. So Yozora-senpai must be under a lot of stress. It’s kind of a sad story.
“Well, as you know, I’ve had a lot of boys like me. All this time, I’ve been confessed to by upperclassmen, classmates and underclassmen.”
“Yes, I’ve heard rumors of that.”
“There were all kinds of people like that… Of course, there were people who were serious and liked me and were sincere, but there were more who were problematic.”
Yozora-senpai muttered that with a deep feeling. I feel as if there are many years of thoughts and feelings there.
“For example, the third year student who confessed to me when I was in first year was terrible. He looked down on me, and he was like, ‘You can be my girlfriend.'”
“…Why did he do that?”
“I heard he was a popular guy. He was the ace of the basketball team and he was popular with all the girls. I guess that’s why he got carried away and said those things to me. I remember that time so well. I don’t remember the name of that third year at all, though…”
Yozora-senpai, recounting a terrible confession from her past, seemed to be enjoying herself despite her anger. I think that shows how uncomfortable that confession was for her.
The number of confessions over the course of three years must have meant that there must have been a lot of different people. With such a large population, it’s only natural that there would be many problematic people. Yozora-senpai, who had to deal with such people all the time, must have been in a difficult situation when you think about it.
“And some people are persistent. I was annoyed when I turned someone down and he confessed to me again a month later. It’s not like we got involved in the meantime…”
“That’s kind of scary…”
“Yes, it was. I was scared to be honest. You hear about stalkers all the time. Well, luckily I haven’t had any need for police action yet, so I guess I’m lucky.”
“Police action…”
Sometimes, human favoritism is a form of insanity. It is inevitable to feel a glimpse of a stalker when someone repeatedly confesses his/her feelings for you.
It sounds good to say you won’t give up, but it’s hard to say it’s a good idea to pester someone over and over again. The person being confessed to will become more and more scared.
Fortunately, none of the students at the school crossed the line. There were a lot of problems, but it is fortunate that no one crossed the line.
“Oh, maybe that’s why you went out with me, because of that aspect?”
“That aspect? What do you mean by that?”
“If you have a boyfriend, fewer people will want to confess, won’t they?”
“…Ah, that could certainly be the case.”
Yozora-senpai looked surprised at my words.
That means that what I predicted was not in her head at all.
“That’s an unexpected advantage, I’d say… Ah, but will you have to take the arrow in my place?”
“As I said before, it’s fine. It’s no big deal. It’s a natural duty of a boyfriend.”
“I really can’t get to you, can’t I…”
“So don’t worry about it.”
If my presence reduces Yozora-senpai’s sorrow, then there is no problem. That’s what I thought.
I’d be happy to take on half of her troublesome affairs. I’d be willing to take them away from her.
But even so, it seems that confessions to Yozora-senpai will never go away. There are probably people who don’t care about the existence of a boyfriend.
“If someone is really persistent, please tell me. If someone comes on to you regardless of the fact that you have a boyfriend, I’ll take care of it. And if the boyfriend actually comes out, the momentum of such people might stop.”
“I don’t want to bother you, but… Well, it’s true that in such a case it might be better to consult with you.”
Yozora-senpai nodded slowly at my words.
I guess that means she’s going to rely on me. I was very happy about that.
I will protect Yozora-senpai as a boyfriend. I’ve made up my mind to do so.
