In the quiet depths of the imperial capital’s nightlight, the Imperial Palace stood illuminated, a lone bonfire its only source of light. 

Two knights stood guard at the gate, swords at their hips, vigilantly scanning their surroundings. 

I descended from the sky directly in front of them.

“Who goes there?!”

The knights, alerted by my sudden appearance, drew their swords, pointing them at me. 

In response, I replied with a smile.

“I am here to speak with the foolish emperor. Summon him.”

“Insolent fool! You dare speak of His Majesty in such a manner? You will pay for this!”

“To the gate! An intruder!” one of the knights shouted towards the interior of the palace.

Moments later, the heavy thud of footsteps echoed as around a dozen knights clad in armors emerged. 

It seemed excessive for a single intruder, but perhaps appropriate given this was the Imperial Castle.

“Kneel!” one of the knights commanded and I found this very displeasing.

“Don’t give me orders, imbecile. [Collapse]”

In an instant, several knights crumpled, staining the ground crimson.

“Wha—?!”

“[Liberation]”

The force of the compressed magic’s release crushed several more knights against the walls. Less potent than [Collapse], their body remains presented a gruesome sight.

The remaining knights were visibly shaken by the display of absolute power. 

As I prepared to finish them off, their bodies, armor and all, were bisected before I could even launch my attack.

“Lulua, I told you to leave one alive. We need someone to fetch the emperor.”

“Ahaha… Sorry, Wraith-sama. I got carried away.”

Lulua offered a wry smile, her sword, now battered and broken, in hand. 

I sighed softly as Lilia and the others approached.

“Your sword broke after only a few swings. Your strength has surpassed human standards now, huh? Just like our Master~”

“Really? I’m kind of happy about that…”

“Husband, what about me? What do you think of me?”

“…I don’t know.”

The tension dissipated with Lilia’s arrival. 

Though likely my fault, challenging the nation’s very apex and remaining this relaxed was… unusual.

Well, it wouldn’t be fun otherwise. I decided to consider it just right.

“Now, we have no one to call the emperor. Let’s find someone suitable—ah, no. More knights have conveniently arrived.”

Sensing their presence, I turned to see another group of knights approaching, likely alerted by the ones I had just dispatched. Their eyes locked onto us, filled with a sharp glint. 

Seeing their resolute determination, I decided that I would soon dull that glint.

“Husband, allow me to take care of them. Lulua’s sword is also broken.”

“Alright.”

Lilia raised her right hand towards the group of knights approaching us. 

The air chilled, the temperature plummeting. Ice formed around her, slowly coalescing into spears, easily numbering over a hundred.

With a single word, a torrent of icy spears rained down upon the knights.

“Guh, Aaaaagh!”

Lilia aimed to incapacitate rather than kill, piercing limbs and grazing torsos. The knights let out screams that echoed throughout the palace grounds.

As the barrage ceased, the knights lay writhing on the ground, groaning in pain. 

Lilia turned back to me, her enchanting smile adorning her face as if her previous actions were nothing.

“How is that, Husband? With such screams, the emperor himself is sure to come.”

“…Yes, well done.”

“Hehe~…”

A part of me wondered if the commotion would prevent the guards from moving the emperor, but I would find out soon enough. 

I patted Lilia’s head appreciating her efforts.

“Whether or not the emperor appears, waiting here is tedious. I believe there’s a mage’s research tower in the Imperial Palace. Let’s destroy it while we wait.”

“I’m afraid I’ll have to stop you.”

With these words, the emperor emerged from the palace, accompanied by several individuals, including my father. They surveyed the scene, their faces etched with fear.

“…Do you realize this is a clear act of rebellion, Wraith Heavil?”

“Hahaha! How amusing, Emperor. It was you who ignored my words. I even went out of my way to give you a warning, a demonstration, so to speak.”

I gave the emperor a villainous grin.

“Now, foolish emperor. Hear my demands.”
