Chapter 50 : Challenge by the Protagonist
At the magic academy, classes are divided into five ranks: S, A, B, C, and D. Furthermore, within each rank, there are three sub-divisions: First, Second, and Third.
For example, S-First, S-Second, S-Third, A-First… and so on.
This classification is based on the results of the recent aptitude test, with S-First being the most proficient and D-Third having the lowest abilities.
In the first year, students are categorized into nobles and commoners, following this classification. However, in the second year, alphabetically labeled classes are introduced, increasing the number of students per class.
I, of course, belong to the S-First class.
It’s only natural to be at this level if I want to break free from the fate of being a villain.
Being in a highly skilled class, I entered a conveniently located classroom.
The interior resembles that of a typical fantasy world academy.
Several desks are arranged in rows, extending in a stair-like manner towards the back, and the seating is free. In the front, there’s a lectern and a teacher’s desk, with a large blackboard easily visible to the rear seats.
The windows are relatively large, with some decorative elements. On the wall facing the corridor, there’s a space designated for the servants accompanying the young nobles, who stand quietly in line while waiting.
Of course, they stand. It would be unthinkable for the servants to sit.
“Um, sir?”
“What is it?”
“Should I also wait there?”
“Yes.”
“Can I… sit down?”
“If you want to disgrace me, do as you please.”
I observed the servants who were standing and then noticed Serena, who was accompanying me as my personal maid, made a strained face. She kept casting a somewhat subservient gaze, seemingly uncomfortable with standing.
…If I ignore her, she’ll keep staring at me forever.
“Sigh… You can use magic. Adjust the magic power as you see fit.”
“Oh, yes.”
Perhaps she didn’t notice.
Serena’s reluctance to stand is likely due to the fatigue. After spending two years together, I can somehow understand what she’s thinking. So, suggesting using magic to alleviate her burden seems to have sparked her realization, and she heads towards where other servants were.
After Serena moved away, I glanced around to decide where to sit and spot a familiar face.
As I walked through the desks, a person also noticed me and stood up, bowing slightly.
“Long time no see, Wraith-sama.”
“Yeah. It’s been a while, Corrid.”
The person I found was Corrid Lessor, the second son of the Lessor Marquis family whom I met at a party two years ago. I remember him because of the interesting response he gave to my question back then.
“May I sit here?”
“Yes, if it pleases you, Wraith-sama.”
I sit down, leaving one empty space between Corrid and me. Even after I sit, Corrid adjusted his position.
“I didn’t expect to meet you here of all places.”
“Haha. If I could surpass Wraith-sama’s expectations, I would be honored.”
“Well, feel free to be proud. Honestly, two years ago, you didn’t have the strength to enter this class, right?”
At my words, Corrid showed surprise and widened his eyes.
“As expected. If Wraith-sama says so… two years ago, I didn’t have the strength to enter this class.”
“So, did you put in a considerable effort over these two years, or did you gain new power?”
“Yes, that’s correct.”
“Show me that power sometime soon.”
“With pleasure.”
While talking to Corrid, I realized that a considerable number of students have gathered in the classroom, and among them is the protagonist who is supposed to enter this class according to the original story. The protagonist is chatting with some students, a scene I’ve seen in the original work.
In the original, today would end without any particular incidents, but with my irregular existence as an outsider, there’s a good chance it won’t go according to the original plan. However, based on what I saw in the recent aptitude test, the protagonist’s current abilities are not only insufficient to defeat me but even touching me seems impossible.
So, I don’t need to be wary of physical matters, but I might get involved in some troublesome situations. I should at least keep my consciousness alert.
While pondering over these things, a teacher entered the classroom through the front door. A teacher with blond hair, often seen in nobles, neatly combed backward, and wearing square-framed glasses. His expression is soft and friendly. He wears a suit-like outfit with a mage robe draped over it.
The teacher, Mikhail Walklin, stood next to the lectern and looked around the classroom before addressing us.
“Nice to meet you. I am Mikhail Walklin, your homeroom teacher from today. I mainly handle classes related to magical tools. Let’s get along for the coming year.”
After Mikhail’s introduction, the students in the classroom applauded. The scene was following just as it was in the original.
Mikhail’s greeting and the subsequent reactions, all were per the original.
That was really boring.
After finishing the explanation of the academy’s rules and the rough schedule for the year, today’s class was dismissed.
“Well then, Wraith-sama, see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah.”
I responded to Corrid’s farewell, and as Serena approached, we headed towards the door.
“Hey, you.”
Just as I was about to leave the classroom, I was called from behind. If this were an unfamiliar voice, I would have ignored it and left the classroom. However, I recognized this voice.
Slowly, I turned my gaze backward.
Crimson hair, thrown back as if expressing the owner’s strong will, and eyes filled with justice.
A person who doesn’t back down an inch in front of me, the next duke.
Yeah.
He is someone I really dislike.
The protagonist standing behind me, without averting his gaze, questions me.
“Is that woman your companion?”
“If you’re going to ask someone, start by introducing yourself.”
“Answer my question.”
Yeah, he is irritating.
That attitude of not listening to my words and just trying to achieve their goal.
That brain that doesn’t understand common sense.
Those eyes that believe they’re right without any doubt.
I hated them even in my previous life.
“…Yes, she’s the woman I brought.”
Upon answering, the protagonist takes off the glove on his left hand and throws it towards me. I understood the meaning and catched the glove.
“I challenge you to a duel. If I win, release her from slavery.”

Yay! I’m very happy Corrid’s in this class! 😁
Also, I hate these type of protags. They’re not really even protags. Just nuisances. Noisy nuisances. A normal protag wouldn’t be the one being aggressive towards the villain. It’s usually the other way around. This kinda implies that the protag must be a reincarnator like Wraith for him to go for him from the get-go.
Also, how rude not to introduce himself before proclaiming a duel. And he’s stupid for picking a fight against a duke’s family and the son of the prime minister. In RL, you’d be dead.
