Chapter 31 : Before the Party
The Imperial City, being a symbol of the Emperor’s authority, is adorned with paintings that even the nobles of the area cannot reach, displayed along the wide corridors one walks through. The carpet beneath feels surprisingly pleasant, unlike any sensation experienced before.
As one progresses down the corridor, faint sounds of music and people’s conversations become audible from the distance. Continuing down the corridor, the sounds grow louder, eventually reaching the entrance of a large hall.
A servant stationed beside the entrance approached us and said,
“Welcome. May I inquire about your family name?”
“Heavilel.”
“The Heaville Duke Family, I presume. Please wait a moment.”
The servant takes out a small bundle of papers from his pocket and flips through them one by one.
In such gatherings, there is a specific order for entering the venue. The order is as follows: Baronial families, Viscount families, Earl families, Marquis families, Duke families, the Imperial Family, and finally, the Emperor. One must enter in order from the lowest rank to the highest, as a mistake in this order can lead to complicated issues specific to the nobility. Both the nobles and servants are meticulous in checking and confirming this order using bundles of papers.
The Heaville family, being a ducal family with a status just below the Emperor and the Imperial Family, is expected to enter the venue relatively late. Considering this, they left the estate with the anticipation of minimal waiting.
“Confirmation complete. The nobles from Baron to Marquis families have already entered. However, the last Marquis family just entered a moment ago. How would you like to proceed?”
“Hmm…”
Entering just after a Marquis family is not ideal for a Duke family. While they maintain the correct order, the complicated vanity of the nobility can create unnecessary complications.
While contemplating this, I noticed that Father, who was accompanied by Sharmilina and Klein, approached me from the side. Surprisingly, another man was also coming towards us from diagonally behind.
This man appears slightly older than Father, but the aura he exudes seems more powerful. Considering the absence of children, he is likely the head of the Rishal Duchy. I thought he was already in Imperial City due to his daughter Miliana being engaged to the second Imperial prince, but perhaps he returned home for work and just arrived.
Father, whether curious about my presence or not, approaches me.
“Wraith, is something wrong?”
“Yes. The last remaining Marquis family just entered the venue.”
“I see. Then we’ll wait here for a while.”
Father says this and goes to inform the head of the Richard family about the current situation. In his place, Sharmilina, with an expression that seemed to convey her anger, approached me.
“Onii-sama! Why did you go ahead without me? I was planning on asking you to escort me!”
“I apologize for that. However, I already have two companions to escort. Unfortunately, escorting you will be impossible.”
“Ugh. So those two are not servants but rather your women.”
Sulking, Sharmilina blurts out those words. She might not have noticed the servants of the ducal residence, but she seems to be aware of the situation. It’s only natural since the time spent with Sharmilina was the longest until the inspection, and she must have considered it normal.
After calming down Sharmilina, I moved to the window and leaned against the wall.
Lilia and Lulua didn’t lean against the wall but stood next to me.
“It seems you’ve been exposed. What will you do, husband?”
“There’s no need to do anything. It was surprising that she noticed it, but she won’t needlessly spread rumors. Father is aware but hasn’t said anything. There shouldn’t be a problem.”
“That’s pretty casual, Wraith-sama.”
“Is it bad?”
“No, that’s just about right.”
Saying this, Lulua smiles.
While conversing with the two, Father walked towards us. He stopped in front of me, slightly relaxed his expression, and spoke.
“Wraith, I apologize for earlier. I spoke foolishly for the sake of appearances. I won’t say anything more. Do as you please.”
Father slightly bowed in my direction. Observing this, I can’t help but think that Father is a likable person.
The conversation before entering the Imperial City—the one where he spoke for the sake of noble vanity—was an expression of the slight nobility that exists within Father. From my perspective, it was more like, ‘What’s the point of saying this now after letting me do as I pleased for so long?’ So, I responded with a somewhat rebellious attitude, but it seems that Father has reconsidered his actions until now and is acting accordingly.
However, I must still ask why.
“What changed your mind?”
“Regarding your response earlier, the quick change in attitude, and the magic I witnessed during the journey to the capital. You are exceptional in every aspect. I trust you and have decided to let you do as you please, given your excellence. Unless there are major issues, I’ll turn a blind eye even to minor problematic actions.”
“I see.”
“Thank you. We should now enter the venue.”
Saying this, Father headed towards the entrance.
I followed him, and Lilia commented in a low tone which only I could hear.
“I’m glad, my lord.”
“Yeah.”
