Chapter 01: The Infiltration Begins
“—Alex… This mission may be too difficult and dangerous for someone like you, only sixteen… But the only chance we have left to defeat the seemingly unbeatable Elenorde Empire is this plan.”
Hearing my father, the King of Sandrotheim, say this, I nodded.
“Yes, you want me to infiltrate the enemy nation, the Elenorde Empire, as a slave and find any weaknesses or confidential information… I understand the danger, but if it means I can protect this kingdom, I’m willing to do it!”
“You’re my pride and joy, son… But if you sense danger and things start to get out of hand, escape using the method we discussed. Your life is more important than any information.”
“I understand, Father… Then, Alex Sandrotheim will now begin the infiltration mission into the enemy nation for the sake of our homeland!”
“Very well, Alex. I’m counting on you.”
After my final audience with Father before heading to the Elenorde Empire, I left the throne room and walked down the castle corridors.
The war between the Kingdom of Sandrotheim and the Empire of Elenorde had dragged on for a long time, but the balance was about to break, and if things continued like this, Sandrotheim would be defeated.
We needed to find a way to turn things around, but no openings could be found… likely because the enemy’s commanders and those involved were incredibly skilled.
“However… when it comes to infiltration, there’s one small opening.”
When I entered my room, I began taking off my royal clothes.
The Elenorde Empire had gained vast amounts of land through its overwhelming power, but managing all that territory required more manpower than they had.
To solve this, they treated the people from the conquered lands as slaves, using them as their labor force.
Just hearing about slavery makes my skin crawl, but at the same time, I had to admit that thanks to this system, I could now disguise myself as a slave and infiltrate the Elenorde Empire.
“…This should do.”
While I was lost in thought, I quickly changed into the torn, shabby clothes that looked fitting for a slave. After finishing my disguise, I left the royal castle and headed toward an area near the Elenorde Empire where soldiers frequently patrolled.
“Huh?”
One of the patrolling soldiers seemed to notice me and began approaching.
“You there! Must be one of those filthy runaway slaves, huh?”
Since I usually stayed away from the frontlines, there was no way this soldier would recognize me as the prince of Sandrotheim.
Honestly, I felt like punching him in the face, grabbing his sword, and slicing his neck, but I held back and put on a frightened act.
“I-I got separated from the others before they took me away…”
“Tch, what a hassle… Fine, I’ll take you to the venue myself.”
“V-Venue?”
Of course, I knew exactly what he meant… In fact, today was chosen for this mission specifically because of that event, so I didn’t even need to ask. But I decided to play dumb in the hopes of picking up any new information.
The soldier, proud of himself, explained further.
“Yeah, it’s the slave auction. Maybe some noble will take pity on you and buy you. If you’re lucky, you’ll spend your miserable life serving them. If not, you’ll just be stuck doing backbreaking labor until you drop dead.”
The way he spoke so casually about such a thing was proof that the people of the Elenorde Empire were… exactly what I expected. I didn’t get any useful information, just a bad taste in my mouth.
After that, I was loaded onto a carriage and taken to the auction site by the soldier. There, I was made to stand in line with the other slaves. It seemed we were each going to have a tag with our name hung around our necks in turn.
…If my true identity as royalty were exposed here, I wouldn’t just be enslaved—I’d be executed on the spot. So, I absolutely couldn’t let them find out who I really was.
“You’re next. Name?”
When it was finally my turn, I answered:
“L-Luke.”
Of course, I used a fake name.
The man in front of me didn’t seem to suspect anything and wrote “Luke” on the tag, then hung it around my neck.
Good… It seemed no one in the Elenorde Empire knew my face.
Since there had been no contact between our kingdoms during the war, it made sense that no one here would recognize me.
While I was thinking that, I suddenly heard an overly cheerful female voice that didn’t suit this place at all.
“Waa~! This is my first time at a slave auction! So this is what it’s like—amazing!”
How could someone be so excited at a slave auction…? Still, it had nothing to do with me, so I didn’t pay much attention.
Even though I hadn’t bothered to look, it seemed from her voice that she was talking to the man holding the tag in front of me.
“The main auction is further in, right?”
“Y-Yes, it is.”
Why is he so tense…?
“Yay! I’m so excit—ed!?”
Suddenly, the woman let out a surprised gasp.
I had no idea what she was so shocked about, but after a brief pause—someone grabbed my shoulders and started shaking me.
“Hey! You! With those clothes, are you a slave? So cool—and cute too!”
“Uh…”
As my shoulders were shaken, I reflexively turned towards the voice. There stood a woman with a bright expression, white hair, and blue eyes. Despite her casual manner of speaking, her face was beautifully shaped, and her overall appearance had a mature elegance to it.
However, instead of being captivated by her looks, all I could think was, How could someone like this exist during a time of war? The thought filled me with disgust, and I quickly averted my gaze.
Unable to resist, as a slave should, I stood there while the woman with white hair continued to shake my shoulders and ramble on with words that made no sense to me. Finally, the man with the tag spoke up.
“Y-Your Grace, Duchess! Please, you’re causing a scene! He’s just a product for sale!”
—Duchess!?
Hearing that word, I immediately looked back at the white-haired woman.
From her behavior alone, she didn’t seem like it at all, but if she stayed quiet, I could kind of sense the grace typical of someone from a duke’s family.
If she really was from a noble house, she might know a secret or two about this country’s weaknesses or confidential information.
As I stared straight into her eyes, thinking about this, her cheeks flushed red.
“H-Hey, if you keep looking at me with those beautiful eyes like that… Do you want me to buy you?”
If staying close to this woman could help me gather information… then maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea.
“P-Please!”
“Wha—! I only came here to check out the auction today, and I’ve never bought a slave before, but… fine! You’ll be my first! I’ll definitely win you! Oh my gosh, am I falling in love with a slave at first sight—?”
From here on, it’s all about how to gather information from this white-haired woman without making her suspicious. I know it’s not easy to collect intel as a slave… but still.
For the sake of the Kingdom of Sandrotheim, I will succeed!

Why would you become slave? The worst job a spy could take is becoming slave, it narrows down your area, the amount of information you can get, also pretty risky if you ask me.
It doesn’t seem like he has a lot of options…
