Chapter 52: “The Epilogue Only One Knows”
A week had passed since the anniversary.
Nothing significant had happened—just peaceful, ordinary days.
Morning walks to school with Kana and Minase, classes, and then the three of us heading home together.
Nothing special, but that was what felt most comfortable. Today was just another one of those days.
“Onee-chan, how do you solve this problem?” “Ah, this one—”
With exams coming up in two weeks, we had gathered at the Minai household for a study session.
The three of us sat around the table in Kana’s room, scribbling notes and working through practice problems.
“It’s really convenient to have an older sister when you’re bad at studying. You get instant tutoring.”
“Hey! Can you at least say I’m ‘not good’ instead of ‘bad’?”
Kana pouted, puffing up her cheeks, and I chuckled.
For someone like Kana, who wasn’t exactly an academic star, having an older sister was a huge advantage.
It was like having a private tutor at home.
“This time, I have to avoid failing…” “Yeah, otherwise you’ll have to spend the post-exam break in remedial classes.”
“There’s no way I’m giving up my date for that—!” “Oh? So you two are going on a date then?”
Minase’s voice was filled with curiosity as she turned to Kana.
“Yeah, since we have a four-day break, we were thinking of going on a short trip—maybe an overnight stay.”
“So, an overnight date?” “…Yeah. That’s why I really need to pass this time…”
Even while chatting, Kana kept her eyes on her problem set, determinedly moving her pen.
This time, even I had to get serious. I wasn’t bad at studying, but the test covered a broad and difficult range of topics.
It wasn’t just that—helping Kana study made it hard to focus on my own work.
I wanted to rely on Minase, but… “Aren’t you supposed to be studying for entrance exams?”
She was in her third year of high school—right in the middle of the most critical period.
It didn’t feel right to make her tutor Kana when she had her own priorities.
Most students at this stage were practically breathing fire over their studies. I didn’t want to add more to her plate.
“Eh, I don’t really need to study for entrance exams, right?” “Huh?”
“Wha—?! Onee-chan!?” Minase tilted her head with a nonchalant smile, and both Kana and I stared at her in shock.
“You mean… you’re not taking the exams?” “Well, yeah, that’s what it means.”
“Then… you’re planning to become a NEET?!” “Of course not!”
Kana recoiled, looking genuinely concerned, and Minase quickly corrected her.
Thank god. I didn’t even want to imagine how Kana would feel if her older sister suddenly declared herself a shut-in.
“Then what are you going to do, Onee-chan?” Kana frowned as she questioned Minase.
She could be planning to work, apply for a specialized school that didn’t require entrance exams, or something else entirely.
But the answer Minase gave us was… “I’m moving away.”
It was far worse than becoming a NEET.
