Chapter 40: A Sense of Balance
“Your casual outfit gets high marks. You look stylish.” “That’s your first comment upon seeing me?”
Around noon the next day, Minase and I met up in front of the station.
“It’s expected to dress up for a date, but it’s nice that you put effort into your style even on a day like this.”
“Are you underestimating me?” “Well, you were about to give a stuffed animal as a present, so…”
“I have no comeback for that.” My clothes had nothing to do with that. I just wore what I liked—it was purely my taste.
I might consider matching with someone’s style to an extent, but I didn’t think about it too deeply.
“It’s a good thing to care about your appearance. It means you’re aware that people are looking at you.”
“First, you insult me, then you compliment me. What’s with that?”
“Motivation boost?” “…Annoying.”
Why did she always have to say things that got on my nerves the moment we met? It was infuriating.
“Alright, let’s go.” Minase started walking, completely ignoring my sour expression.
Since I had no idea where we were headed, I simply followed behind her.
We took the train for a few stops. I expected her to mess with me during the ride, but instead, we both just scrolled through our phones in silence.
After about ten minutes, we arrived in a district filled with accessory shops, vintage clothing stores, and trendy boutiques.
“You can find just about anything here.” Minase stood confidently under the station sign.
“I haven’t come here much. The last time was probably when I went shopping for clothes with a friend.”
“Tell me what kind of gift you’re thinking of, and I’ll guide you.” “That’s what I was planning to figure out today.”
Before picking a store, we needed to decide on a type of gift. Stuffed animals were out. Rings were a no-go. That left me completely lost.
“Classic options for presents are necklaces or perfumes. Something that lasts makes for a good keepsake.”
“A necklace sounds nice.” “There are also bracelets, wallets, and small accessories.”
“A wallet could be good. Maybe even clothes?” “It depends on her taste, but don’t worry—I’ll help with that.”
“That’s actually really helpful.” Despite all her teasing, she was pretty reliable when it counted.
“Alright, let’s check out a store that carries clothes, accessories, and small items that match Kana’s style.”
“Got it. Lead the way.” “I know a place Kana really liked last time we came here. You’ll probably find something good there.”
“You two really are close sisters.” If Kana already liked the store, chances were high that something would stand out.
My plan was simple: pick a few options, get Minase’s input to narrow them down, and make the final decision myself.
A perfect process. All that was left was to hope no one saw us.
I hadn’t told Kana that I was shopping with Minase. I wasn’t keeping it a secret, but if she happened to see us together, she might get the wrong idea.
To avoid that risk, I had asked Samidare to keep Kana occupied with karaoke.
Even if someone from school spotted us, I could just say I was buying a present for Kana. That explanation would be enough.
Now, time to find the perfect gift.
