Chapter 39: Even if I Say I’ll Go Shopping with You?
“Yeah, this was pointless. I’ll just ask someone else. See ya.”
Annoyed, I moved to hang up the call. “Wait! I was just joking! Forgive me, okay?”
Minase frantically apologized. “It’s fine. I don’t need anything from you anymore.”
“Are you sure you don’t want any useful information from Kana’s family?”
“You’d just mess with me and not tell me anything anyway.”
“What if I say I’ll go shopping with you?”
“…Oh?” That was an intriguing offer. I paused and listened more intently.
Shopping for Kana’s present with Minase… That might actually be a good idea.
If I go alone, I’ll probably overthink things and end up picking something weird. Getting direct input would be a big help.
Besides, if Minase tries to pull any tricks, I can just yell at her on the spot. Being there in person is a better way to keep things under control than relying on a phone call.
“I’ll give you advice, but you’ll have to make the final decision yourself.”
“That’s still a huge help. After how badly my sense of taste got trashed, I don’t think I can buy anything alone.”
“So basically, how Kana sees you depends on me?” “If you suggest something that’s bad but just subtle enough for me not to notice, I’ll kill you.”
“Haha~ No way, no way!” Minase’s tone was completely flat. I clicked my tongue.
Can I really trust her? Doubt lingered in my mind.
Still, despite all her teasing, she’d probably help me pick out something decent in the end. The annoying part was just the process.
“Alright, I’m counting on you. I want Kana to be happy.” When I earnestly asked for her help, she responded cheerfully.
“Of course! Leave it to your big sis!” “If I had a sister like you, I’d cut ties immediately.”
If I had an older sister and she had a personality like Minase’s, I would’ve disowned her long ago.
“I need to have it ready by next week.” The anniversary is next Thursday. Since we have school that day, I plan to take Kana out on a date after class and give her the present then.
For the date, I’m thinking of taking her to a slightly fancy restaurant. My sense of taste isn’t bad enough to mess up that choice, at least.
“Then we should buy it as soon as possible.” “Yeah, the earlier, the better.”
“Okay, let’s meet at the station at noon tomorrow!”
“Wait, tomorrow—” Before I could finish, the call was already disconnected.
She’s so abrupt about everything… Luckily, I didn’t have any plans tomorrow, but what if I did? What would she have done then?
It feels like she just assumes I’m always free. That pisses me off. “Is she really going to give me proper advice?”
I had my doubts, but bringing her along was better than going alone. If she actually helped me pick something good, I might even treat her to a meal.
Maybe I could also take advantage of this and ask her more about Kana.
I’ll find out tomorrow. The next day, I arrived at our meeting spot in front of the station and checked my watch.
“Still five minutes early, huh…” I didn’t expect Minase to be on time, so I showed up a little ahead of schedule just in case.
As I stood among the bustling crowd, scanning my surroundings, I saw a familiar figure waving and running toward me from a distance.
“Sorry, sorry! I overslept a little!” Of course, she was late.
“Whatever, let’s just go.” “Wait a sec! We need to decide what kind of present first!”
We stepped into a nearby café to discuss the general direction of the gift.
“Does Kana like accessories?” “Not really. She’s not the type to wear flashy stuff.”
“Then maybe a simple accessory could work?”
“…That’s a possibility.” As the conversation continued, I was a bit surprised to see Minase seriously thinking things over.
For the next few hours, we browsed various stores, searching for the perfect gift for Kana.
Along the way, Minase tried on some accessories herself, and strangely enough, they suited her. She also ended up chatting with the store clerks more than I expected.
Despite everything, we were having a good time.
Eventually, I decided on a simple silver bracelet. “Oh, nice! I think Kana will love this one!”
“You sure? …Alright, I’ll trust your judgment.” With that, our shopping trip was complete.
“Souta-kun, since we went through all that effort together, you’re going to treat me to a meal, right?”
“…Fine, as promised.” “Yay!” We entered a café and ordered some coffee.
With the present secured and everything settled, I finally felt a bit more relaxed.
Now, all that remained was to give it to Kana on our anniversary.
