Chapter 38: The Present
“I want to give her a present for our one-month anniversary.”
It was past 11 p.m. on a Friday when I sat on my bed and made a call to a certain someone.
“…Oh? Tell me more.” “I don’t know what kind of gifts girls like, so I was hoping for some advice.”
“A present for Kana, huh…? Alright! Big sis is on the case!” I had called Minase, the one who knew Kana best and was, in many ways, a reliable source of information.
Of course, there was always the risk of being led astray with some weird suggestion, but I figured the chances of getting useful advice were higher. I decided to bet on that.
The apology gift I gave last time had turned out fine in the end. That wasn’t really relevant here, but asking her sister still seemed like the best move.
The most reliable advice usually comes from those closest to the person in question.
“So, what do you think would be a good idea?” “Hmm… Honestly, I think Kana would be happy with anything you give her.”
“That might be true, but I’d hate for her to think I have no taste.” “That’s a fair point. If your gift has no sense of style, she might be totally put off.”
“Exactly. That’s why I’m asking you.” “What were you thinking of getting her at first?”
“I was considering a stuffed animal or maybe a ring—something she could keep.”
“Yeah, absolutely don’t do that.” “Wait, seriously? That’s a bad idea?”
“Totally. That would be cringe-worthy and creepy.” Minase’s voice dropped into a serious tone, and I instinctively shrank back.
I had spent time researching online, and this was what I had come up with. How could it be that bad?
A stuffed animal did seem a little childish, but I was pretty confident about the ring.
I had imagined a romantic scene where I’d gently slip it onto her finger when I gave it to her. It would be the perfect, romantic gesture.
No—wait. I needed to get my head out of the clouds. Lately, things had been feeling like some kind of romantic comedy, making it hard to stay grounded in reality.
If I thought about it rationally, a ring was way too much. Definitely over-the-top. “That’s why I need your help. I have no sense for this kind of thing.”
“There’s something Kana would love that’s super easy to find.”
“Really?” “Yep. You can even buy it at a convenience store.”
Minase’s words caught my interest. “It comes in a square box.”
“Uh-huh.” “The cheap ones come in packs of ten.”
“Uh-huh… Wait, what?” “The expensive ones only have three in a pack, and they disappear fast, but the quality is top-notch.”
“Hey.” “They’re called condoms.” “I swear to God, I’m gonna smack you.”
Why had I even bothered asking her?
Who in their right mind would give condoms as a one-month anniversary gift? If that were acceptable, I might as well go all out and get something even more… adult. No, wait—what was I even thinking?!
Minase was dragging me into madness. I needed to snap out of it.
Maybe I just had to figure this out on my own. Or ask a friend who was actually in a relationship.
Minase was the person who knew Kana best, but clearly, she was not the right person for this particular job.
