Chapter 37: A Genuine Smile
“What were you so worried about?” Kana peeked her head out from the group of people surrounding her as she responded to my question.
“Well, I thought people would tell me to break up with you or say all sorts of things.”
“Huh? You were thinking about that?” “Yeah, I mean, isn’t it scary? I heard the photos were spreading around.”
“Well… that part is a little scary, I guess.” “I was worried people would say that someone like me isn’t good enough for someone as popular as you.”
I spoke honestly, revealing my concerns.
Everyone, at least once, has probably dreamed of dating the most popular and beautiful person at school. But with that dream comes certain responsibilities.
Even if you manage to date them, you have to be prepared for the inevitable doubts—whether you’re truly a good match and whether you can withstand the scrutiny of others.
I was confident in myself when it came to the first part. But the second part? That worried me much more.
The more I thought about what others might say, the more I began to doubt whether we were really a good match. It was a vicious cycle of self-doubt and insecurity.
But now, standing here with Kana, I realized those worries had been unnecessary all along.
“Does it even matter if two people are a perfect match or not? If they’re happy together, isn’t that what really counts? No one else has the right to interfere.”
Miku sighed dramatically, shaking her head as she spoke.
“Did you actually think we’d say something like that?”
“Well, maybe a little…” “Hah! At least you’re honest! But yeah, I get it. It’s scary. Even I would be terrified if people found out I was dating Kana.”
What an amazing friend—everyone needs someone like Miku in their life.
“Miku-chan… thank you.” “No problem. Just be happy together, okay?”
“…Yeah.” Kana nodded, and at that moment, a wave of cheers erupted from the crowd.
Cries of “Congratulations!” and “Be happy!” rang out, every single one filled with warmth and encouragement.
I suddenly felt an arm wrap around my shoulders, and when I turned, I saw one of my guy friends grinning at me.
“Damn, I’m so jealous of you, man!” Other guys, some of whom I barely knew, started chiming in.
“Dude, how the hell did you end up dating Kana?!” “If you ever cheat on her, I swear I’ll personally make sure you regret it!”
Their words, rather than being filled with resentment, were full of admiration and playful envy.
Standing there, surrounded by this overwhelmingly positive energy, I realized how foolish my fears had been.
I had been so worried about how people would react, about whether they would judge me, about whether they would think I wasn’t good enough for Kana.
But I had been wrong. There was not a single person here who wished us ill.
And more than that, Kana was not the kind of person people would speak badly of, no matter what happened.
Popularity isn’t just about being admired from a distance. It’s built on real relationships, on the people around you.
Kana was not only beautiful and kind, but she also had wonderful friends. It was because of these relationships that she could enjoy her school life so fully.
“Oh, come on, guys—this is getting kind of embarrassing…” Kana’s face turned a deep shade of red as she tried, half-heartedly, to stop the celebrations.
But there was no hint of displeasure on her face. In fact, she was smiling brighter than ever.
