Chapter 31: Unnecessary Meddling
“So… you saw everything that happened today?!” Kana burst out, her voice rising as she processed the conversation.
“Well, yeah, it’d be a lie if I said we didn’t,” Mizuse admitted casually.
“…Ugh!” “You know, you make faces you never show me, and it was so touching I almost cried,” Mizuse added, looking strangely sentimental.
“Don’t get emotional about it!” Kana snapped, her face instantly turning bright red as she realized everything had been seen.
“How could you even see our faces? You kept your distance, didn’t you?” I asked, baffled.
“With binoculars, of course! Oh, and Samidare brought her DSLR, so we’ve got all of Kana’s cute expressions and Souma-kun’s lovey-dovey moments captured beautifully,” Mizuse explained nonchalantly.
“DELETE THEM!” Kana and I yelled in unison. Samidare claimed she had tried to stop Mizuse earlier, but she was all in, bringing a DSLR along like some professional photographer.
“Mizuse, you idiot! Why were you watching everything?! What if I did something super embarrassing?! Samidare, you too!” Kana shouted, unable to hold back her frustration, and started lightly pounding Mizuse’s shoulder.
I was just as mortified. Of all people, these two were the last ones I wanted to see Kana and me being affectionate.
“Ugh… I just want to die,” Kana muttered, covering her flushed face with both hands.
“Don’t worry! You were adorable the whole time!” Samidare chimed in, giving her a thumbs-up as if that would help.
“That’s not the point!” Kana screamed, her face turning an even deeper shade of red. Thanks to these two, what started as a fun date had turned into a humiliating ordeal.
“Alright, so how are you two going to make up for this? You owe us,” I demanded, glaring at them.
Sensing my frustration, Mizuse began trying to justify herself.
“Think about it, though. We were like your personal photographers! The pictures came out amazing, you know?” she said, smiling nervously.
“Yeah, maybe when you see the best shots, you’ll be glad we came along!” Samidare added, nodding in agreement.
“I don’t recall ever asking for photographers,” I retorted sharply. “Well, as Kana’s big sister, I felt it was my duty to capture her happiest moments,” Mizuse replied with mock sincerity.
“Do you know what that’s called?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. “A caring and thoughtful sister?” she ventured hopefully.
“No. It’s called unnecessary meddling!” Mizuse and Samidare’s excuses were grating on my nerves. I clenched my fists to keep my anger in check, waiting for them to apologize properly.
“Hey, look at this,” Kana murmured, tugging on my sleeve. “What is it, Kana? If you have something to say, just tell them off. You’re sisters, so you can be blunt,” I encouraged her.
“No, I mean… look at that picture,” Kana said, pointing toward Mizuse’s DSLR screen.
There, on the screen, was a photo of the two of us. It captured a moment we hadn’t even noticed—a natural, candid shot where we looked genuinely happy together, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
It was… undeniably beautiful.
