Chapter 30: Couldn’t Hold Back My Emotions
“W-Wait, Mizuse and Samidare?!” Kana exclaimed, her eyes wide as she looked at Mizuse, sprawled beside the trash can, and Samidare, who stood frozen, making awkward eye contact with us.
The culprits behind the shutter sound were none other than these two stalkers.
My prediction had been spot on. “T-This is, uh, you know, it’s not what it looks like! Mizuse-senpai and I weren’t following you two since morning or anything, and we definitely weren’t taking pictures of you the whole time!” Samidare blurted out, confessing everything before I could even interrogate her.
“I told you not to give it away!” Mizuse groaned. “I-I haven’t said anything yet!” Samidare protested.
“No, no, you’ve already said it all,” I retorted. “Huh? No way… We worked so hard to follow you without being noticed, and now…” Samidare muttered, realizing her slip-up.
“See? You’re spilling it again,” I pointed out. “All that effort, hiding and watching you two so closely… It’s all ruined…” she lamented.
“Unbelievable…” I sighed. Samidare had completely unraveled, blurting everything out in a panic. Even Mizuse gave up, letting out a long sigh beside her.
“Ugh, we were so close to pulling it off perfectly…” Mizuse muttered, scratching her head in frustration.
“You two were tailing us this whole time?” Kana asked quietly, her voice trembling as she stared down at the ground.
“‘Tailing’ sounds so harsh. I’d call it ‘keeping an eye on you,’” Mizuse replied. “That’s not any better!” Kana snapped.
“Then maybe… detective work? I mean, we were taking pictures too,” Mizuse added.
“That’s even worse!” Kana retorted. “Hmm… Maybe it’s best if we just say it was a coincidence,” Mizuse suggested.
“It’s way too late for that!” Kana yelled. No matter how they phrased it, their behavior was terrible. Just when we were finally enjoying some time together, this unpleasant revelation ruined everything. It felt like a scenario straight out of a rom-com, but one I’d rather not experience.
And when would this ridiculous sisterly comedy routine end? It might be amusing to watch but now wasn’t the time.
“So, from where exactly did you start following us?” I asked, even though I already dreaded the answer.
“When you two were flirting near the park gate, I guess?” Mizuse said casually.
“From the very beginning, then!” I exclaimed. “I-I told her we should just take one or two pictures and go home!” Samidare defended herself. “But…”
“But you couldn’t hold back your emotions,” I finished for her. “…I’m sorry,” she muttered, bowing her head.
“Following us in the first place makes you just as guilty as Mizuse,” I said sternly.
How much more trouble were these two planning to cause? It was hard enough for Kana and me to find time alone together. And now, even when we did manage it, I’d always have this lingering unease in the back of my mind.
…Wait a minute. If I thought about it, there might have been other times they’d been following us too. The more I dwelled on it, the more issues came to mind. For now, though, it was best not to think about it anymore…
