Chapter 29: The Suspicious Shutter Sound
Walking through the park illuminated by streetlights, we soon arrived at our destination.
“Thank goodness… It’s not too crowded,” Kana said with relief. “This place is a hidden gem,” I replied. I had expected a popular photo spot like this to be constantly bustling with people, but aside from us, there were only two couples around.
This hidden spot, located at the edge of the lake in the center of the park, truly felt secluded.
“You did well to find a place like this,” I commented. “I didn’t find it alone; someone told me about it,” Kana replied.
“A friend?” I asked. “Nope, my sister,” she said.
“…I see.” Something about this made me uneasy. It’s a picturesque location, perfect for photos, yet there are so few people here. If a hidden gem like this existed, it would surely be the talk of the town.
Mizuse must have stumbled upon it by chance and then told Kana about it, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
“Let’s take pictures while it’s still quiet,” Kana suggested. As she glanced around, she clung to my arm and raised her smartphone to take pictures.
“Yeah, let’s get it done quickly and leave,” I agreed. With the camera pointed at us, we struck poses together. After taking several pictures, Kana checked them and looked pleased.
We were about to enjoy the scenery for a bit before heading home when Kana whispered in my ear, “Hey, do you hear a shutter sound?”
“…Yeah, I do.” Listening closely, I could hear the constant sound of a camera shutter coming from somewhere.
The other couples around us weren’t taking selfies or photos. They were just flirting. And there weren’t any photographers capturing the scenery either.
“What’s that sound? It’s a little creepy,” Kana said, pressing closer to me uneasily.
“This is too suspicious,” I muttered. My hunch might be right. If that’s the case, then someone must be hiding nearby—one person, or maybe two.
I scanned the area thoroughly, checking every shadow and behind every tree, but I couldn’t spot anyone suspicious.
“Let’s get out of here,” I said, grabbing Kana’s hand and starting to leave, but my feet stopped.
In my line of sight was a trash can, and from it, I caught the reflection of a camera lens.
My bad feeling had been spot-on. Now that I’d spotted them, I had to catch them red-handed, seize the camera, and make sure the photos were deleted. Everything else could wait.
“Hey, you over there—” I shouted, pointing at the trash can. “Wait, don’t push me! Ow!” a voice cried out.
“What the hell are you doing!? This gives you away…” The culprit revealed themselves, stepping out from their hiding spot on their own.
