Chapter 25: It’s…Beautiful
Even so, the line moved steadily forward. The closer we got to the heart of the attraction, the faster my heartbeat raced.
But the warm grip of Kana’s hand calmed me, as if her presence alone was a true emotional balm.
“Almost there,” she said with a cheerful smile. “Don’t say that… I’d rather keep waiting in this line.”
Before I could continue, the boarding platform appeared just ahead. “Just endure this one moment, and paradise awaits.”
“Exactly! Think about all the fun we’ll have after this!” “It might even feel refreshing afterward.”
“Honestly, just being with Kana is refreshing enough. I don’t care about the ride itself anymore.”
“Hey, we waited in line for this, you know!” “Yeah, but this line is where I feel the most at ease.”
“I didn’t even do anything, though.” “You don’t have to. Just being here with me is enough to soothe my nerves.”
“…I see.” If I had to wait in line, I’d rather it be for a calm ride. But somehow, nothing else felt right. Kana’s words, however simple, had a way of putting me at ease.
“Please board the ride!” the cheerful staff member directed us, their smile brighter than the sun.
We stepped onto the attraction and found our seats. “Good thing we got the best spot,” Kana said, clearly pleased.
Our seat was at the very back, on the wall side—a position Kana claimed was the least scary.
The front seats were closer to the screams, and the opposite end of the last row had an open view that amplified the sense of floating. But our spot, surrounded by seats and a sturdy wall, offered a semblance of safety.
“A small mercy…” “Seeing you so nervous is making me nervous now!”
“Glad to know my anxiety’s contagious.” “That’s not exactly a good thing!”
Despite her words, Kana’s laughter betrayed her amusement. Even if she was genuinely nervous, she hid it well behind her radiant smile.
“Let’s just take deep breaths and mentally prepare. Or, more accurately, let me prepare.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll hold your hand the whole time.” “That helps a lot. Oh, the announcements have started—it’s almost time.”
“I can’t even hear the announcements anymore.” My body was so tense that everything except Kana’s voice seemed muted.
Maybe it was better this way—less time to dwell on what was coming. Her voice became my anchor.
Focus on Kana. Just Kana… I closed my eyes and tried to calm myself. But instead of her soothing voice, the excited chatter of other riders broke through my concentration.
“Souma! Look over there!” She tapped my shoulder, and I opened my eyes cautiously.
At first, I thought she was pointing to indicate that the ride hadn’t started yet. But instead, she gestured toward a large window offering a breathtaking view of the park.
“…Beautiful.” Despite the looming drop, I found myself captivated by the scene.
The sunlight streaming through the window illuminated the park’s vibrant colors, and in its glow, Kana’s profile shone even brighter.
“Yeah!” Her smile, brighter than the sunlight, made everything worth it.
And then— My heart seemed to leap out of my chest as a rush of weightlessness overtook my body.
Screams and cheers echoed all around us, and I vaguely registered Kana’s thrilled laughter beside me.
Instinctively, I gripped her hand tighter, bracing myself for the ordeal. “Souma, are you okay? It’s over now.”
I blinked, disoriented. The ride had ended before I even realized it.
